I like millipedes a lot, ever since grade school. Once a week a biologist would come to our class with various critters, and one time he brought millipedes. We even got to hold them - all those legs tickle! (He had centipedes too, but we weren't allowed to touch those.)
However, I fully understand the squeamishness. There is a certain insect that, if it is ever released on this site, I will block the image on my browser. Yes, I know all the stuff about most bugs are harmless to us and actually helpful, doesn't matter. Also heard the one that they're more scared of us, and that is a blatant LIE.

Personally, I really like most invertebrates. And I think some kind of isopod, maybe "pill-bugs"/"roly-poly", would be very cool!

I really like these critters, though not crazy for them.
I know for sure the one insect that I hope never makes it on the site (should anyone want to torment me enough to make one) is any and all species of roach. I would never collect one and if there would ever be a quest requiring you have one--I would never complete it.

But there are some very pretty rainbow coloured bush roaches here in Oz, they live in the leaf litter and do not infest houses or food like the European red roach does - those I do despise, but lumping an entire species in one category of hate over just one group's bad behaviour seems a bit extreme.

As much as I hate any kind of creepy crawly, give them pretty colors like these, or even rainbow colors, and I dig 'em. Especially cause they're not real.

You're right, those are stunning! You did a good job capturing that in the sprites.Mysfytt wrote:Yeah sorry guys - they were made after being inspired by my own annual Summer millipede invasion - The magenta one is a Dragon Millipede and the other is an Amercican Giant. i thought they were pretty for annoying little buggers.

There are ~4.5ish thousand different species of roach, of those only a couple dozen have been recorded hanging around human homes.
Of those couple dozen only four species make it a habit enough to be common pests.
It's not one species being hated because of the actions of the few, it's 4.5 thousand species being hated because of the actions of the four.
For reference, mammals are only a little more diverse with about 5.5k species hanging around.
People might as well hate elephants/seals/cows/foxes/etc. because there're a couple dozen rodents that love living in human homes. It's only fair.
More Cool Roach Facts:
Spoiler
- Roaches are surprisingly clean animals when given the chance. Their exoskeleton is apparently pretty smooth and hard for bacteria to grip onto, so they don't really carry much around with them, making the average roach at worst just about as dirty as the environment it finds itself in. In addition, they groom themselves and each-other obsessively, like tiny little cats.
- Roaches tend to like to spend time around certain other individual roaches, which they recognize via chemical cues. Roaches have friends, if you want to anthropomorphize*.
- Even the cleanest home has enough organic detritus to support a population of roaches. Fortunately, they do tend to prefer to infest dirtier homes, mostly because there's more food and it's easier to get. Roaches, like most animals, are lazy as hell.
- Termites are actually a type of derived roach! Most roaches are social animals, but termites have gone full on eusocial, like ants/bees/naked molerats.
- The closet living cousins of the roaches are the mantises, of all things. One prehistoric lineage split into one of the most social insects on the planet and one of the most distinctly asocial. Isn't that neat?
* Which you really shouldn't in most cases, but substituting "friend" for "fellow roach it shows high preference for spending idle time with" doesn't strike me as the worst possible thing to do.

I can appreciate these new bugs and the sprite work is impressive, though I'll have to admit that the southern ones do look pretty spooky. The western ones look friendlier, probably because they're rounder for example and millipedes don't generally look as scary to me. I'm not a huge fan of centipedes however, and at times I've had to encounter them indoors.

Re: Creatures 1030/1031-Desgolos
That doesn't matter to me what color it is, I haven't seen not one roach species that I'd care for. It's just a type of bug that I don't like as they just creep me out. It's like different species of mice/rats to people who don't like rodents. Doesn't matter what color it is, it's still a mouse/rat. I can deal with any other type of bug, but the roach just gives me the heebie geebies. No matter the type or color. I don't know why that is exactly, bad experience in the past that I'm just not recalling? Who knows, it's just the one bug category that I avoid. That's just me.Mysfytt wrote:But there are some very pretty rainbow coloured bush roaches here in Oz, they live in the leaf litter and do not infest houses or food like the European red roach does - those I do despise, but lumping an entire species in one category of hate over just one group's bad behaviour seems a bit extreme.

Now you guys know how I feel whenever a new dog/canine creature is released on the site (more or less).
Looking at the bright side, if these manage to creep people out it means the person who made them did a really good job.

I keep seeing people mentioning roly-polies. Where I come from, we referred to them as potato bugs. I think I'm in the absolute minority
While I do think the art is beautiful.... I can feel their legs touching me in my mind and it's unsettling. Sorry
