"Why Cats Always Land on their Feet"

Long, long ago, in the days when Ra still ruled over all of Egypt, his youngest daughter, Bastet, was wont to play with the temple cats. One day, while she was playing with them, one of the kittens climbed up a palm tree. Seeing how high up he had gotten, the kitten, whose name was Amun, mewed pitifully for his mother, Isis.
But his mother was unable to reach him. Nor could Bastet.
"May be one of the priests can get Amun down," Bastet mused.
"Meeow!" Isis agreed.
So Bastet ran over to the sanctuary in search of a priest to rescue Amun. She found one of the tall, dark-skinned Nubians who served the needs of the priests.
"Hotep, one of the temple cats climbed up a tree and can't get down!" Bastet exclaimed.
Bastet led Hotep to the tree where Amun was stuck.
"Meowmeowmeow!" wailed Amun pitiously.
"Can you get him down, Hotep?" Bastet asked.
Hotep shook his head.
"I'm sorry, but I can't," he said sadly. "But I do know someone who can."
"Really?" Bastet asked.
"Her name is Sakhmet," Hotep replied.
"The goddess of war? How can she help us? And why would she help us?"
"Amun bears her mark," Hotep explained. "She has claimed him as hers."
"How do I find her?" Bastet asked.
"You don't," a powerful female voice replied from behind Bastet.
As Bastet turned around to face the newcomer, Hotep fell to his knees.
"The Mighty One," he whispered reverently.
"Who are you?" Bastet boldly demanded.
"I am Sakhmet," the woman replied. "Who are you who dares to speak so boldly towards me?"
"I am Bastet, daughter of Ra," Bastet replied.
To her surprise, Sakhmet bowed.
"My Lady," she said, "please tell me how I can assist you."
"Amun is trapped in that tree," Bastet replied, pointing to the tree Amun was in. "Can you get him down?"
"But he will only climb up there again, once he forgets his fear," Sakhmet observed. "And I can't always be there to help him down every time he gets stuck up a tree."
Hotep raised his hand.
"What is it, Hotep?" Sakhmet asked.
"If you were to give Amun the ability to fall from heights and land on his feet without harm, then he would no longer be trapped in the tree," he replied.
"Why not just give that ability to all cats and be done with it?" Sakhmet remarked drily.
"That's a great idea, Sakhmet," Bastet remarked. "Can you do that?"
"Certainly, I can do that, my Lady," Sakhmet replied.
She muttered a few words.
"There, now he--and any cat in the whole world--can fall from a height and land safely on their feet," Sakhmet said, then she was gone.
"That was it?" Bastet said in disbelief. "No flashy lights, no explosions, no dramatics?"
"Meooow!" Isis called to Amun, telling him to come down.
"Mew?" Amun asked.
"MEOW!" Isis yowled angrily, demanding that Amun come down immediately.
"Meow, meow!" grumbled Amun before he leapt down from the tree.
"Meow!" cried Isis as she ran over to Amun.
"Praise be Sakhmet, he landed on his feet!" Bastet exclaimed happily.
"I never doubted her for a minute," Hotep said.
"You bear her mark, too," Bastet remarked. "Of course you wouldn't doubt your own mistress."
"Meow," Isis said. Thank you, Lady Bastet.
"You're welcome, Isis," Bastet replied, kneeling down to pet the queen.
"Meeooww." Say 'thank you', Amun.
"Meeow."
"You're welcome too, Amun," Bastet said with a smile.
