Well, sighting I thought was cool?
A beefly!
I was looking at the pollinators on a lilac bush because there wer tons of different butterflies, moths, and bees, when suddenly a little fuzzy bee-looking critter flies up. It was weird, because it sorta looked like a bee, but it flew like a hummingbird... so I waited for it to fly closer, and lo and behold, it only had one pair of wings - a dipterid! (aka 'fly')
They look like a pompom decided to become a bee - so cute!

Re: Wildlife
twice in my life, i have come somewhat close to a deer, the first time a fawn was hiding behind a thistle and i didn't know it, and it ran out right in front of me, this was in a big garden that leads into my woods, the second and more recent time, an adult doe ran through the woods somewhat near to me. both times had a lasting effect on me, and i now have an indescribeable respet tword nature.

Re: Wildlife
That is amazing. We once had a bunch of deer racing in front of car. There was quite a few does and I think a buck or two. No idea where they came from or why they were running, but they crossed the road and vanished.
Tonight I found a peculiar sight. We have two porch lights, one in front and one in back and moths are attracted to that. I thought a moth hit the light and fell on our porch, but it turns out that there was a cicada instead. Huh? I thought they come out later (more during summer instead of spring).
I don't think it survived the impact though, it was pretty still.

Re: Wildlife
I think I just found a shrew today. Well my dog found it and I had to retrieve him. But there was a little thing on the grass, still alive, but looked peculiar. The first thing I saw was the long snout, but some research told me that it can't be a mole.
It looks like the little bugger had its burrow nearby or maybe was in the process of digging when Sammy found him.

Re: Wildlife
our farm cat used to bring in shrews regularly, as well as field mice and various other rodents, young rabbits, birds and once, a mole. That was the first and only time I've ever seen a mole. But I digress - shrews look not unlike mice apart from the long nose, and are around the same size. If you pick them up they make an awful lot of very shrill noise... hence the old term 'shrew' for a woman who scolds a lot.

Re: Wildlife
This is from several years ago, personally. A family friend we used to visit regularly happens to own a home in northern Georgia, so we would go and visit them there. Since the home is back in the woods, they happen to have a large amount of wildlife that comes near their home. So I've seen deer and bears both when I have visited them in the past. What's really cool is that the bears will often come right up against the house, which made for great photos.
Oh, and there was the opossum in our trash can a few years back. And I see plenty of fish in the pond behind my house regularly, plus egrets and herons.

Re: Wildlife
The other night I saw a barn owl...and I got very close to it too. Separated by a fence and the boughs of the fir tree, but it was close and I got to lay eyes on its features.
A story to go with it too.
So before I go to bed, I take Samson out to potty. I usually open the door and let him go out on his own, but that night he started barking at something and I went out to see what the fuss was about. I had a flash light and was just shining it around when I thought I saw the glow that comes from a pair of animal eyes. I went down there once to check it out, but saw nothing. I went back up the stairs and on the porch. The second time I did indeed see a pair of eyes in a tree that lies behind the fence of my back yard.
Back down the stairs I went. I actually thought it may be a cat who roams my neighborhood every now and then (she is spayed) since that back area is where she usually can be found. But nope, it was not a cat...but a bird, an owl.
Talk about good camouflage. I did not see it the first time because it was tucked in pretty well in the tree, but now I could see it and it was amazing. I once saw another owl who also did a good job at blending in, different species though.
It was some years ago, but my grandma and I think that this owl was the same one we once saw sitting on the back fence beyond our backyard.
Haven't seen it since, but I kind of hope it will come back. Maybe it was just passing through?

Re: Wildlife
In-law was burning a mop and found a large skink in the head, so he called my husband to get her out. She was just fine, thank god he found her before she went into the fire, though. From what I can tell she's a subadult five-lined skink, and she's very feisty. Given me a bunch of good bites but she's got such a tiny jaw it's not really a big deal. Have taken worse bites from my reptiles, LOL.
Just before finding that girl, same in-law found another skink when digging holes to replace the fence Irma took from us. That one was just a juvenile though and we relocated him safely away from where the digging was taking place.

Re: Wildlife
I often see spotted doves near my home. These birds are totally not afraid of people. If you do not stare at them they will not fly away even at a distance less than one meter. I remember that once I walked pass a walking spotted dove, I tried to not stare at it, it stopped to watch me, after a few seconds it walked as if I was not closed to it.(I'm sorry that I could not recognize their gender, both males and females look very similar.)
I live in eastern Asia and often see poeple post spotted dove nests online. Spotted doves sometimes nest on the outside window ledge, in the gap of air conditioner outside machine, even in flower pots, using few straws and sticks. There were pictures showed that few doves use iron wire to build nests. These nests are simple and crude, make you worrying if those eggs will fall out of the nest.
If a female spotted dove decides to build a nest outside my window I would glad to see the baby birds grow, however no bird came. Maybe my window ledge is not suitable for nests. I could only see them on the path or lawn near my home, searching for food. It's hard for wild birds to find food in winter and there was heavy snow yesterday, I brought some oats and sunflower seeds for them. Hope they can spend the winter safely.

Re: Wildlife
a few years ago we had a pair of collared doves nesting in our apple tree - right outside the back window of the house so we had a great view. Their nests were similarly ridiculous - just a few twigs held together mostly with hope, you could see right through them from below. Unfortunately although the birds sat on the nest for some time they never managed to hatch anything out.
