These are vain creatures, but with fair cause: large fans of exquisite interlocking crystals form winglike sail-fins along their backs, and smaller sprays of lighter-colored crystal matrices frame their heads and limbs. Each scale a tiny gem, with larger cabochons adorning joints, tail, and forehead, they are companions for only the most wealthy of citizens, or magi. In the ocean they can communicate across incredible distances with shivers of sound that resonate and are "tuned" in the crystals that form their own bodies, before being transmitted to another crystalwing. The only communication they emit that falls within human hearing range are their dirges, which are eerie, keening descants in chords that few can parse. Although the cause of such dirges are tragic, most consider it a wondrous event to be witness to such songs.
Little is known about crystalwings; majestic, brightly colored creatures that are rarely seen. They are so uncommon among the local villagers that they are regarded as myth, beings said to have existed centuries ago. What little that is known is this: these gorgeous animals are adorned with crystalline scales that are true gems, and are so heavy that magic is certainly involved in their locomotion as well as existence. According to ancient legend, they originate from the Caves of Nareau, where few venture to go. Akvo crystalwings' scale-gems are vivid with the deep blues and purples of the ocean depths. It is believed that they travel along flooded passageways connecting areas of the sea floor with tunnels extending all the way to the Caves of Nareau.
