Hawke's Entry: in progress (now with MORE pictures!)

Post by TNHawke »

The Jackalope

General: Jackalopes are common all throughout the world, though they prefer areas with open fields and brush to hide in. They are rarely seen, as they tend to be secretive and flighty, either running for flying from danger. Jackalopes are known to harbor exquisite luck, which is why they are rarely seen. This luck was what led to the unfortunate practice of keeping common rabbits feet, which was useless to the person holding it, and deadly for the poor bunny. Jackalopes can only share their keen luck when alive and well, and will only share it when they are happy and well cared for by their Magi companion. Once trust has been built, these are friendly and gregarious creatures, preferring to live with the company of more Jackalopes, or other pets than to be alone. It is not uncommon to see a few Jackalopes tucked up between the talons of a lounging hippogryph. Most predators would rather share in the Jackalope's luck, than have it for dinner.

Egg: This small, mottled brown egg has a cottony puff sticking out of it.

Hatchling: Baby Jackalopes spend most of their time nestled some place soft and warm, asleep. This one seems to enjoy sleeping in your laundry hamper. In the morning and evening, however, they will wake and spend a few hours dashing and hopping all around. Tiny wings full of pin feathers are stretched and flapped to gain strength and soon they are able to flutter short distances. As they grow older, the first nubs of horns begin to appear and they enjoy getting their heads scratched and rubbed very much. Once their horns have started growing in, they become much more active, more of the time, and they are insatiably curious, the world is their play ground to be gotten up onto, into, under and around. The owner of a young Jackalope certainly has their hands full!

Adult: The adult Jackalope is similar in size and build to a regular rabbit, but they have short, rounded wings and sport antlers on their heads. The antlers of males have several points, while the females have only two prongs on theirs. Jackalopes change color in each season to aid in camouflage- they know better than to rely on luck for everything! They are bright snowy white in the winter and dirty brown in the summer, while patchy in spring and autumn as they shed out between the two.

This is my cruddy concept for the summer coat, kind of mottled, natural brown. Winter would be similar, but all white with grey shadows. For spring, I see brown on top, and white on the sides, and for fall, white on top and brown on the sides.

Side note: prior to comments made in this thread, I have never even heard of a wolpetinger (or how ever it's spelled) I have since learned that it is a German, carnivorous, fanged, hawk winged, horned rabbit. These Jackalopes are herbivorous, pheasant winged, antlered bunnies- just like the taxidermies I have seen IRL.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Tusked Deer
General: The Tusked Deer are primarily found in the wooded foothills between the Silva Forest and the Alasre Mountains. They graze on grass as well as browse on foliage, but in the harsh winters they will use their sharp tusks to break through frozen snow pack or even rip bark from trees. Wild Tusked Deer live in small herds of several family groups. They are known to mate for life and are fiercely loyal to their partner and herd. The magi who seeks to keep Tusked Deer must be strong willed and a good leader, always providing food, water and protection, or the the Deer may turn on the Magi with deadly consequences, and will leave to seek a new herd.
Egg: This is a large brown egg with black and white spots- and look, a tiny cloven hoof has broken through!
Hatchling: Young Tusked Deer are capable of walking shortly after they hatch, although they are quite wobbly at first. They are adorably comical to look at, appearing to be all knees and head. They grow quickly though, and are soon racing around meadows and forests with grace and ease.
Adult: Unlike most other deer, both male and female Tusked Deer have antlers, and also unlike other deer, they do not shed them annually. Antlers, hooves and tusks are all used to protect the herd and home. While the deer rarely fight with each other, they use their natural weapons against predators. Tusked Deer are prized by Magi for their strength, speed and uncommon bravery in the face of danger.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Domestic Unicorns (one entry, or three, you decide!)

General: Domestic Unicorns are quite different from their magical cousins the Dark and Light Unicorns. No one is certain any more, if these have any actual relation to those mythical beasts or not. While there is certainly a physical resemblance in that they are all four legged, hoofed animals with a single, hard horn spiraling from their forehead, the domestic unicorns completely lack all magic and are rarely found in the wild. This does not stop them from being highly sought after.

Egg: This pearly white egg has a sharp golden horn protruding from it.

Hatchling: When Domestic Unicorns hatch, they use their tiny, but already sharp and hard horns to break through their egg shell. Curious by nature and able to run and leap nimbly almost immediately after hatching, they are quite the responsibility for any Magi to raise. The young must be trained early to be extremely careful of where they put their sharp little horns so they do not inadvertently hurt themselves or anyone else. Although born white, they may become one of several colors upon reaching adulthood.

Adult Gothic: The Gothic unicorns are carefree and fun loving. When they are not eating or sleeping, they are frolicking through field and forest. They are mischievous creatures with a knack for harmlessly teasing their Magi friends. They are the smallest and most goat-like of all unicorns having the longest horn, the shortest tail and the smallest beard and feathering on their cloven hooves. They have luxuriously soft, plush coats and are often kept as pets. When their wool is shed each spring, it is gathered and spun into fine yarn and thread for making cloth and garments. Gothic Unicorns seem to crave human company and when found away from humans, they are distraught and happy to follow the humans where ever they are headed.

Adult Western: Western Unicorns look the most like the magical Unicorns, but lack the beard, foot feathering and extremely long manes and tails. With their shorter horns, Western Unicorns have been mistaken for nothing more than an average horse when the lighting is poor. Westerns are prized for their strength and endurance and are often used to pull carriages, although they are not above helping to plow a field for food. The few wild herds of Western Unicorns can be found in secluded valley meadows.

Adult Heraldic: In the wild, these are shy and elusive creatures of mountain forests. They are the swiftest and strongest of all the Domestic Unicorns, and it is these that the Unicorns on medieval crests were based. The Heraldic Unicorn is the epitome of a heart that is wild and free, and they can only be tamed by the gentleness of innocence. They have long beards and foot feathering; a long, spiral horn and cloven hooves. Their tails have been described as similar to a lion's. These Unicorns are sometimes ridden into battle where their sharp horns and hooves make formidable weapons.

Further description:
Stream Born Gothics will always be white, SB Heraldic will always be black, and SB Western will always be brown (or bay). They can interbreed to make hybrid colors. When hybrid colors breed, they can make pinto, palomino, or appaloosa.

Stream Born
Western- brown
Gothic – white
Heraldic – black

Interbreed to make color hybrids
western – white, black
Gothic – brown, black
Heraldic- white, brown

color hybrids interbreed to make additional hybrids
white + black = pinto
brown + white = palomino
brown + black = appaloosa

Ok, so those last two parts are kind of insane, but *I'D* like to see it!

It probably already is, but, according to the rules, a creature can be submitted by more than one person.

I saw your sprite, and it's VERY cute.

Oh, thanks :3

love the deer by the way, but that's probably no surprise since I'm entering with Antelice. MagiStream is in need of a Deer creature!

By adding wings to the Jackalope, you kinda made it a Wolpertinger

I've never heard of a Wolpertinger, but I've seen taxidermy Jackalopes with wings. Jackrabbit + small antlers or pronghorns + pheasant wings. That's what I based it on. Arts soon... bed first! lol.

There is a jackalope around here somewhere.

Hawke, I LOVE your Unicorns! I want!!! Especially Heraldic, sooo beautiful! And it would be awesome to get them from the stream. ^^ Of course, people will be fishing like mad. Man, can you imagine the work that will go into hybird unicorns? Although I imagine black and white to look like a zebra unicorn (maybe), which would be neat, that's for sure. Although I do see your pinto down there, which is neat, too.

I'd like the tusked deer, too. That's a neat idea, and I think you have the market on that one. Wouldn't mind a jackalope, but definitely not my thing, myself. Still neat. ^^
