A young girl skipped by the Stream accompanied by her older brother. The pair were going fishing and were discussing what fish could possibly live in the torrent.
"I'd guess carp, or something similiar" said the boy, who was quite the expert on fish. "What d'you think, Jay?"
"I s'pose so, yeah. I wonder what we'll catch today.." said his sister. They'd tried a few days ago and had caught nothing. Conversation ceased, both deep in thought. A few moments later, they'd arrived at a new fishing spot. It looked much more promising than their last one. They set up their rods silently, so not to scare off any likely fish. Almost an hour afterwards, Jay got a bite. She reeled furiously, this one was putting up quite a fight. Eventually, she got it on dry land. It was a bright purple fish with a build much like a carp's. She nudged her brother and held up the fish.
"What species do you think this is?" asked Jay, passing him the carp-like creature.
"I have absolutely no idea. So I'm guessing that its very rare. We'd better put it back." He gave it back to his sister who put it back in the water so it could breathe, but didn't let go. She was thinking.
"Couldn't we keep it in a tank or something? So we could study it? It may be a new species altogether, y'know."
"That's a point..I'll go back to the village and get a bucket or two. You stay here with it." The boy lay his fishing rod on the ground and raced off to the human town. Once he was out of view, Jay turned back to the fish.
"What are you?" she murmured. And, to her surprise, the fish answered back!
"I'm a Koi," said the lilac fish. "And I'm not rare, whatever that boy thin-"
"He's my brother, Rob" interrupted Jay. The fish pouted as best a fish can.
"Doesn't matter. Are you taking me home with you?"
"...Yes, if that's okay with you.."
"Yup, its fine with me. You seem nice, which is good. I'd be glad to go home with you. I shall make a Magi of you."
"What did you just say?"
"Nothing, nothing.." A few minutes passed in silence.
"How can you talk, anyway?"
"Hmm? Oh, magic."
"Magic?"
"..Yes."
"How?"
"Because this is the land of magic?"
"I thought it was our land.."
"No, we had it before you."
"...Who's 'we'?"
"Uh..The dragons, the unicorns, the direwolves, the leviathans, the mantic-"
"What? We've never seen any of those before!"
"Obviously. They're hiding, they don't like you. They're afraid of what they don't know. You're new to them."
"What if we made an agreement with them all? Sort of like a I-won't-hurt-you-if-you-don't-eat-me thing? Or a I'll-care-for-you-if-you-care-for-me thing? Would that bring them out of hiding?"
"Possibly. I can't be sure though." Jay did not answer. She was thinking of the possibilities, oh, the possibilities of having a dragon as a friend. They could soar above the clouds, touch the stars...Oh, that would be amazing.
"Where, when and how could we ask them, though?"
"I guess you could go to Center Rock," said the koi, who then added "The center of the land, by the way."
"Hmm...I'll try it."
A few weeks later, she and the two village leaders left for Center Rock. A couple of hours after leaving the village, the trio arrived at the Rock. Jay's koi, which she had named Messenger, had told the dragons, who were the largest influence on the daily life of the creatures of magic, as when a dragon said "Jump" you said "How high?" They were the most dangerous of all the creatures. These enormous creatures had arrived before them. The trio bowed, which seemed the appropriate thing to do. The dragons bowed back and spoke.
"What is that you wished to ask of us, the oldest creatures in the land?" Jay told them.
"We wish to form an allegiance with both you and the other species of this land so that we all can live in peace and harmony." After much thought and consideration, the dragons agreed and the creatures of myth came out of hiding.
"Girl," said the dragon. Jay turned and faced the creature. "We have been told how well you looked after Messenger, and would like you to carry on caring for young creatures that you come accross. In fact, we will send down the Stream eggs unlike no other. Who knows what you might find."
"Oh my...Thankyou!" Jay turned to leave.
"Oh, and, Jay..Please train other humans to care for the eggs and hatchlings they find. Good luck." The dragon spread his wings and took off into the glorious sunset.
And that was the story of the First Magi.
