so i found out last week that hurricane/tornado-force winds and camping don't mix well.

No, they sure don't! We lost a pup tent in Lake Champlain that way once. Thankfully, it had recently been abandoned for the cabin tent.

we lost our pop-up tent. but luckily it held together to protect our stuff. just couldn't collapse it after the storm passed.

Yeah My brother's pup tent actually tore loose of its moorings and was blown into the lake. Mine was blown down, but the anchor pegs held. I think his had been set at an angle so that the wind caught and lifted it, where mine, the wind blew over it.

The pop-up camper my family was staying in tipped over. It was a very stressful night.
