Amphiteres

Post by Silberndrache »

Amphiteres are the 'parrots of the dragon family' - minor members, both in size and intelligence. The biggest obvious difference – besides size – is the lack of hind legs. Since amphiteres spend an inordinate amount of time on the wing – only landing to roost or brood – they have exceptionally strong prehensile tails, very agile hand claws on their wings and disproportionately large wings. An adult is only about as long as a man's arm - about 30' - head to tail-tip, and they are about as intelligent as a four or five year old human. In this respect they are much like macaw parrots: fairly bright, very curious, and incredibly devoted to their caretakers. They have been known to attack creatures far larger than themselves when their magi is threatened, and make excellent camp guardians with their excellent night vision and utter fearlessness. Possibly the one drawback to these incredible creatures is only that they do not do well in cold climes, and as such are never found in the north.

Eggs are pale colored and have a faint metallic sheen that varies on the species (color) and gender of the hatchling within.

Hatchlings are small (only a few inches long) and take to the air early, even if it's just gliding from one tall surface to the next. They learn to catch insects early, but rely on their parents or magi to provide larger game – usually small rodents torn into bits – until they've grown enough to catch their own.

Adults amphiteres, while one of the smallest draconians, are bright and beautiful – and they know it. An amphiteres color is a marker of both species and gender – a female living in the desert will be shades of copper to pale sand while the males are deep ocher to white, while the females of the jungle are ruby shading out to black on the head, wing and tail-tips, the males deep sapphire with black shading.
With their devotion and fearlessness, amphiteres make excellent 'guard dogs' and messengers, being quick to learn and quicker on the wing, but due to their diminutive size lack the endurance of their larger cousins. With this in mind (and their vanity) it isn't uncommon to see a magi wearing 'living jewelry' around their neck and shoulders as in between flights amphiteres are perfectly content to 'see and be seen'.

Well... like a parrot; brightly colored, fairly small and really nosey...
