You have to leave your Pokemon in there for a while, the likelihood of finding an item is related to the number of steps you've taken. You mostly get dress-up items, or at least I do!

Yes, it is dress-up items only. Should you already have ten of the item you found, you'll get points instead.

Last new items I remember were the plume fossil and cover fossil, after the last shiny race. If there's more new items since then, I am clueless.

A random egg I picked up because I had a gap in my party, couldn't find any of the ones I was Shiny Hunting, and I couldn't stay long enough to find one before I left for work...just hatched into a Shiny Zorua!
