Creature 1109: Golden Vojkabayo
Image
This golden egg is constantly lashing its powerful tail.

Image

Vojkabayo lay only one egg at a time, concentrating on raising the hatchling to independence before they have another. However, vojkabayo often live in small herds so that hatchlings can play together, and to ensure protection from predators. A hatchling vojkabayo has minor control over the water around it, mostly to create bubbles and tiny waterspouts that collapse as soon as the hatchling's attention wanders. If a magi is raising a vojkabayo hatchling alone, be prepared to have it bond immediately and strongly; it will want to be as close as possible to its magi at all times, and will raise a loud racket if it's left alone too long.

Spoiler
By adulthood, a vojkabayo is fully capable of protecting itself, with its powerful front hooves, large teeth, and the ability to bend the water around it to its will. This protection extends to the members of its small herd, as well as the magi it's bonded to. As they were originally bred and used for war, adult vojkabayo can struggle to use their magic in small ways; it's much easier for them to create a tsunami than to create a gentle wave. However, they make excellent companions for those magi who explore the deeper waters of the world.
Vojkabayo are powerful beasts with the ability to live in both salt and fresh waters, though they prefer whichever one it is to be deep enough for diving. Originally used in battle for both their physical strength and their ability to control water, vojkabayo are now mostly kept as protective companions. They bond very strongly with one person and often don't survive long after that person dies. It's considered a great honour to be buried with a vojkabayo companion and tombs have been found containing the remains of battle magi along with their beloved vojkabayo and its tack.
