Question, though. What sort of knife did you use to cut all the intricate details? Pumpkins are pretty hard and many use a chef knife on it, but one of those seems too big to work out the details. Maybe a paring knife could do that, but it seems a bit small to get through the exterior

Perhaps both? Start with a paring knife to great all the intricate parts of the carving, and then use a chef knife on the parts that require less finesse.

Wow. I think the second pumpkin is actually more impressive than the first. I didn't think it was possible. You're your own biggest competition!

Actually all three images I´ve posted so far are carved into one pumpkin ;)
Now I ran out of space though so I´ll have to start a new one...the image(s) on that one will not be based off of Magistream critters though.

As for the tools question...I don´t use knives at all...I took a photo of the tools I use as that seemed easier to me than explaining:

(for size reference, that pointy thing is about 3 cm long without the handle)

The imp only has an overall height of about 12 to 14 cm so using bigger tools seemed out of the question.

What is that first tool up there? I can't even begin to guess at what it is.

It´s a "Prickelnadel", I can´t find an English equivalent. "Prickeln" is something children sometimes are taught before they learn how to use scissors... the needle is used to perforate the outline until one can carefully tear out whatever one wants to cut. It´s basically a needle/nail with a handle. I usually use it to create details when sculpting.

I was going to say it looked like a hand held ice pick too... but short. The second image has the needle I recall from old fashioned ice picks, but not the top I remember.
