Every few months, the salted lakes the crowned starfish live in are cleaner than usual. This is when the hatchlings come out of their eggs. They need a less polluted environment to be healthy, and their parents do an excellent job in keeping the water clean. Even if they are tiny and somewhat cute-looking, the crowned starfish hatchlings can be aggressive. They attach themselves to a candy wrapper of their choosing and will remain there until it is consumed entirely. These wrappers need to be left in the lakes constantly as the starfish are moody even as hatchlings. The past contents of the wrappers are not important for the hatchlings. What attracts them is the color of the food. If the colors they are interested in are not provided, the hatchlings will wait until more candy wrappers are brought to their lake. If two or more hatchlings are interested in the same wrapper, they will fight until only one remains to claim the precious food.

The search for crowned starfish in the wild has been tedious and unsuccessful. Distant relatives of the starfish have been found, but never the crowned type. Expeditions to the sea are still held annually, and the hope of finding the crowned starfish still exists, but most believe it has completely disappeared in the wild. Fortunately, it can be found in artificial salt lakes. Thriving in the most polluted waters, efforts are continuously made to keep these creatures happy. They refuse to feed on anything else than pollution. Magis have to come up with creative ways of tainting the water without hurting the environment. If the water is not dirty enough, the crowned starfish will climb onto the shore and wait until it is to its liking. The feeding process is slow, as the starfish turn everything they consume into fairly clean water. They are useful when other bodies of water need to be purified. However, they can be rather moody, often refusing to feed if the pollution is not to their liking. Attempts have been made to release the crowned starfish in the wild, but the results are always the same. The starfish will crawl back on land and wait to be put back in their own polluted water.
