Elemental crystalwings are strange creatures. Unlike the most well-known (if not most commonly seen) crystalwings that are creatures of earth and air, they display strong affinity for a specific element the moment they hatch, and actively seek out magi with similar affinities to partner with. Sometimes if an elemental crystalwing does not find a suitable magi, it will even seek out a creature with similar powers as a companion instead. This is uncommon, as elemental crystalwings are highly useful magical companions, making spells of their corresponding element far easier to cast in their presence. Magi speculate that elemental crystalwings seek companions so readily because they are rarely seen manipulating their element themselves, seemingly preferring to help exert their will on the world by helping a companion do so instead.
This egg is hard to see and cold to touch, as it seems to swallow all light and heat around it.
Elemental crystalwing hatchlings are immediately inquisitive upon hatching, if a bit lethargic. They spend the first few days of their lives exploring their environment, seemingly subsiding on the ambient magic that makes up the world, as they do not eat, and everything around them relating to the corresponding element gets just slightly duller somehow during this time. Elemental crystalwing parents will watch the hatchlings during this period, but the hatchlings grow independent very quickly and soon venture off to find a suitable companion.
Void elemental crystalwings are perhaps the least understood of the elemental crystalwings, and those who are bonded to one would say that it is simply their nature to be unknowable. Void elemental crystalwings sometimes simply disappear, and all attempts to understand where they go have failed. They defy even simple observation, for even attempts to measure their length have never been successful, the crystalwing’s body and wingspan suddenly seeming unending, despite taking up the same amount of space. Crystals from void elemental crystalwings cannot be used to store spells, as they tend to unmake them. They are most commonly used in unwritten, improvised rituals, particularly ones for peering into the unknown.
