Numbat #1220

General

Small, quiet, and almost invisible against bare ground thanks to their striped brown backs, numbats are difficult to find if they do not wish to be spotted. However, they are a common sight anywhere construction is taking place, where they are prized for their ability to dig quickly and precisely through any material, and of course, use their long sticky tongues to slurp up any insects - especially termites - that might otherwise plague the ongoing construction. While wild numbats are shy and elusive as a defense against predators, those raised at the Keep are much bolder and can often be spotted poking at this corner or that, especially in the kitchens, warding off any insect infestations before they can start.

Egg

A fuzzy tail has emerged from this striped egg.

Hatchling

Hatchling numbats love to dig in pursuit of tasty insects to eat, whether in the dirt around the Keep, or through the wooden floors and stone walls of their magi companion’s room, and must be trained early on to only dig where it is appropriate. Despite this inconvenience, numbats are popular companions, as any crawly pests within their vicinity swiftly become snacks. Hand-reared hatchlings enjoy taking breaks from digging by clinging to their magi companion’s shoulder and being ferried around, as a mother numbat would with its young in the wild. It’s not uncommon to see magi going about their day with several numbat hatchlings snuggled together on their shoulder, some napping, others peering curiously about.

Adult

As a numbat matures, it spends less time with its magi companion and any littermates, preferring instead to seek out a place where it can dig a nest for itself. Any small sort of burrow will do, but they especially like old logs. They line these burrows with anything soft they can find - soft grass and bits of down in the wild, or lint and cast off rags at the Keep. After a long day of digging holes where needed and ridding the Keep of pests, numbats return to their soft nests to slumber. These carefully furnished homes are fiercely defended against other numbats, and the usually quiet companions will even chatter angrily at their magi if disturbed at their nest.
