Starclad Mink #1197

General

Starclad minks are considered creatures of fortune--both good and bad. Many modern magi put no stock in old beliefs, but many still believe that careful readings of the star patterns on their bodies can predict the luck of the magi who is bonded with them or those who stay nearby them. Predictions can extend even to the mink itself, such as certain patterns indicating that some minks will have long lives or have many hatchlings. Others will be quickly eaten by a predator. Of course, this belief has led many to attempt to breed minks for the express purpose of harvesting the fur of those with the greatest luck, and magi at the keep commonly shut down such operations.

Egg

This egg has beautiful starry patterns.

Hatchling

Two days after a mink hatchling emerges from the egg, their star patterns appear and do not change. Even when newly hatched, predictions can be made about their personalities, success and luck in life based on the patterns, but many people pay no attention to those predictions. What is definitely known is that starclad mink hatchlings are somewhat mischievous, and love to play hide and seek with their magi, whether the magi wants to or not. Excellent climbers and swimmers, there are very few places a small mink can’t get to.

Adult

Magi have long been fascinated by the starry patterns on the fur of the starclad mink. Ancient writings tell of ways to classify these patterns in different ways, and no two methods seem to match. Some writings say that specific swirls of light and placements of stars indicate good fortune in love, while others claim the same patterns mean predictions of poor health. Still others claim that the luck granted by a starclad mink pertains only to the mink itself, and not to those near it. At the keep, these beliefs have mostly boiled down to an acknowledgment that the minks are magical, but if their fur holds power over luck, it operates in such subtle ways that no one can ever be truly sure how, or if, it works. The minks, of course, aren't telling, and are content to live their lives while enjoying the food and companionship their magi offer.
