Thunderbird #665

General

Huge and impressive, thunderbirds are most often seen during summer thunderstorms. They often create these storms around their nests, which are located in high rocky outcroppings in the Alasre Mountains or at the top of old-growth trees in the Silva Forest, and spin them out over their territories, using the winds created to help carry them to hunting grounds. As they mate only in summer and leave their nests only during storms, fetching a thunderbird egg is not for the faint of heart. Any magi who succeeds proves their strength and fearlessness. A thunderbird raised with care and kindness will reward their magi with fierce loyalty, and with their intelligence and tendency towards vengefulness, this is not a loyalty to take lightly. Large enough to easily support a rider, thunderbirds once carried magi into battle, and are still used to take messengers across vast distances, riding on the storms.

Egg

This dark egg crackles with lightning.

Hatchling

Thunderbird hatchlings are loud and obnoxious, delighting in waking their magi at the crack of dawn with thunderous beats of their wings. At a young age thunderbirds are able to create tiny localized thunderstorms, even if this means creating one in their magi's rooms and soaking every possession in it. While they are cheerfully mischievous, they are also affectionate, enjoying the short time they're able to sit on their magi's shoulder before they get too big, and intelligent, devising complicated games and dances, especially with other young thunderbirds.

Adult

Once their adult feathers grow in, thunderbirds are often too big to stay in their magi's rooms - much to the relief of any magi with important paperwork. They prefer high places and will often fly to the top of The Keep to roost on any outcropping large enough to support their weight. They must be kept away from snakes like the Raza cobras and vitons, as they consider these creatures their mortal enemies. An adult thunderbird is a little more mature than a hatchling, but that doesn't stop them from occasionally causing a thunderstorm just to send everyone running into shelter, and they still create complicated dances, especially just before more natural rainfall.
