Cerulean Crystal Fennik #1277

General

Native to the Etain desert, the crystal fenniks are never a rare sight. They are treated with great respect by those who venture into the arid lands. Representations of the desert and the sky, the fenniks come in two colors: golden, like the desert's sand, and cerulean, like the clear sky. Many believe the fenniks were created by the gods, protecting those who dare the barren wastes. They appear when they are most needed, like a hope-giving mirage. Masters of the air, the fenniks will do everything in their power to keep alive those caught in sand storms. Even if they are not strong enough to stop these fierce storms, the fenniks create spheres with clean, breathable air. Travelers in danger only need to wish for a fennik's company, and the creature will appear silently, ready to help in whatever way it can. On scorching days, the cerulean crystal fennik will appear. It cannot call upon water, but it can somewhat cool the air, making the day bearable. On chilling nights, the golden crystal fennik will be the one offering protection. It warms the air in its vicinity and keeps guard over those who need to rest. Their crystals also give a faint glow, serving as guide-lights to those who wander the freezing nights aimlessly. The fenniks disappear once they are no longer needed, leaving only a gust of wind behind.

Egg

Blue crystals protrude from this egg's delicate shell.

Hatchling

When the fenniks hatch, the crystals attached to the shell become part of the little creatures' bodies. They sleep a lot, cuddled around their soft tails like a warm blanket. The scorching days nor the freezing nights affect the hatchlings. Their powers over the air are already taking effect, keeping them comfortable whenever and wherever. Although these creatures can survive for an extended period of time without any food or water, the young crystal fenniks stick with their parents for as long as a year. Adults with bald tail-ends can be a usual sight as the hatchlings like to munch on them when their parents are asleep. When no adults are nearby, the hatchlings suck on their own tail-ends, just like a baby with a pacifier. They are deep sleepers and can rest unbothered through heavy sand storms. If caught under the sand, the hatchlings will simply dig their way out, an activity that brings them joy.

Adult

It can take as long as two years for a crystal fennik to reach adulthood. They grow slowly, at the same rate their powers develop, giving their magic enough time to reach its full potential. A fully grown fennik can sense danger at a great distance, sometimes before it even happens. This is why the fenniks appear to those who require their help. Be it only to warm a traveler's sleep, to guide a lost soul in the endless desert, or to offer protection from sand storms, the fenniks will always help. They are benevolent creatures, never seeking to harm others. Because of this, they feed only on harmful insects, digging in the sand to find them. The crystal fenniks love to sleep. If no danger is sensed nearby, they can sleep for entire weeks, comfortable in the spheres they create. Even when hatchlings are still around them, the adults will sleep contently. Deep sleepers as they are, the adults sometimes wake up half-buried in the sand, the result of a hatchling digging around them.
