Tamias Vison #1080

General

The vison is a shy creature, fleet enough to evade capture by almost any trap and wary of humans, but if you are patient and set up camp in the remote forest near a lake or stream, you may spot one of these creatures sniffing around for food. Smaller than most squirrels, they hardly seem like they would be adept hunters, but they are surprisingly agile and capable of taking down small rabbits if they're hungry enough. Their soft, beautiful fur is waterproof, and between webbed toes and sharp claws, they can go from swimming in swift currents to scampering up tall trees with ease.

Egg

The fur poking out of this egg is beautifully patterned.

Hatchling

A young vison is largely dependent upon its mother (or an especially diligent magi) for care, as it cannot feed itself for its first few months of life. The skill required to hunt takes a long time to learn, and vison eat a large variety of foods in the wild, from insects to fish to small vertebrates. They learn best in small groups, as their mothers will often have several young at a time to increase the chances that at least one will make it to adulthood. For this reason, the Keep often has designated magi look after many vison hatchlings at once, especially if they intend to release them back into the wild one day.

Adult

Vison live in forests around the world, with many different species found in particular forests. The tamias is the most common, native to deciduous forests on either side of the Alasres. Striped to blend in with the patchy forest light, tamias vison tend to have rougher coats than the others and no magical properties, and so have mostly been left alone over the years. The fulgens variety is reclusive, suited to living in the dark depths of tropical forests. Fulgens vison are noted for having the softest fur of any vison, which led them to be hunted for their pelts nearly to extinction. The uncia variety was similarly sought, though less often for its fur than its teeth, which could be used to create a potion to increase the qualities of garments. When hunting of fulgens vison was banned, the alpine variety was pursued instead, as furriers found they could create furs nearly as soft as fulgens pelts by applying uncia potion to the furs of more common species. All major cities and the Keep now outlaw the sale of any vison goods in an effort to bolster vulnerable populations.
