hehehe. It's the most insider way I could have done it.
Not folklore, but the Elder Scrolls games. There's a political faction called Redoran who's main base / seat of power was for generations built inside the shell of an extinct giant crab. A monster, city sided crab they named Skar. "Where's the Redoran council? - Under Skar."
Skar was located at the base of Red Mountain an active volcano that was known for occasionally belching red ash and sand. At least until the volcano blew up three quarters of the island continent.
