Creature 1196: Engull
Obtained by: Stream
Sprites: Lazuli
Description: Raneth
This egg has gray speckles.
While these creatures look unassuming, in large numbers they can be disastrous. They travel in large, noisy flocks, their raucous voices calling out when they spot a place to land where they can gorge. Engulls will eat anything organic, from vegetables in farmer's fields to other small animals, and they eat in vast quantities. One flock of engulls can strip an entire field bare, leaving nothing behind but dirt. Some of them will even eat some of the dirt or rocks to aid digestion. Once they have fed, they will take one day to digest, and then fly to another location to find more food. Their wide wings and expert flying abilities mean they can be found anywhere, and their large meals will sustain them for long overseas flights as they look for more sources of nutrition.
Hatchie:
Spoiler
Engull hatchlings have smaller appetites than adults, but care still needs to be taken in feeding them. Since engulls can safely eat just about anything, training them to consume only specific things is of utmost importance, lest a magi find their engull hatchling eating all of their work papers, pencils, and even clothes. Luckily, they are keen to follow their magi when they're young, and will trot along behind their magi and eat anything that gets dropped. Sometimes they're even used in the kitchens to eat any leftovers for the day.
Spoiler
Engulls can fly for miles and miles on long journeys to find food, and a well-trained engull can be used to send messages if it is fed enough. These creatures are considered a nuisance in most regions, however, and can be wilfull and disobedient. They will only work for food, and truly enormous quantities must be given in order to win their attention, much less respect. They often gather around cities, and can usually be controlled well enough that they eat only the unwanted food that others leave behind. Magi willing to put up with their appetites and attitude often find them useful in a similar way, as they will eat garbage happily. Some consider them vital to keeping places clean.
