The Egg

While they look menacing, these creatures are anything but. Their fur glows with the light and heat of fiery embers, but they use this heat for little other than to warm themselves, or to keep the blankets and pillows they like to sleep on their preferred temperature. They have exquisite control of the temperature the fires on their body burn, and never show any aggression. They are favored pets for keeping fires burning in a fireplace all night long on cold nights. They prefer to follow whoever they have bonded with, but are not suited for energetic work or combat. They prefer to go on short hikes for fun, and then snuggle up on a pile of blankets or on a person's lap, radiating comforting heat.

As hatchlings, hearthhounds are clumsy, bumbling little things, always doing their best to keep their magi in sight. Their fires can sometimes blaze too hot, and they quickly learn to keep them in check, often needing only one mistake to learn what temperature their magi prefer. They howl sadly when left alone for too long, and their fires will burn brighter, as though they are trying to signal however they can for their magi to come home.

These creatures prefer a slower paced life, and are often the companions of older magi. They are content to keep the fires at home burning, waiting for their magi to return from whatever journey or work they have. Some magi have tried to hunt with them, where the hearth hound will proceed slowly, walking sedately through underbrush as though they aren't hunting at all-until with a burst of fire, they will expose their prey as they turn the bush or tree the prey is hiding behind to ash. While it is clear they are able to conjure very hot fire, hearthhounds rarely do, and have never injured a person or another creature in anger.
