Re: Creature 1098
These are cute! They remind me of my old Bearded Dragon. I know not the same species, but they just have that happy, silly smile like he used to have.

Re: Creature 1098
Species: Ruin Lizard
Rotating sprite - changes every 15 minutes
This mossy egg was found nestled among woven roots covering the entrance of an ancient tomb.
Ruin lizard hatchlings are essentially miniature versions of the adults. They are capable of climbing, digging, and even swimming from the moment they hatch. Like many lizards, they have no need for care from their mothers, most of whom are long gone by the time the young lizards emerge. Despite this, they still interact with other ruin lizards on a regular basis, establishing territories amongst their cohort and quickly staking out the best sources of tubers they can find. They live around the ruins of ancient places hidden deep within the Ixan Jungle, and although female lizards live their entire lives near the same ruin, they will travel hundreds of miles to find other temples at which they will lay their eggs.
Historians are fairly certain that ruin lizards were once the guardians of ancient temples in the Ixal jungle. More than just guardians, however, their magic makes it likely that they were used in ancient trials or methods of administering justice. When a ruin lizard makes eye contact with someone, that person becomes unable to tell a lie. This extends even to writing, although not to withholding information. This power is monitored within the keep, with only respected magi and teachers trusted to leverage the ruin lizards this way. When they aren't helping with trials or helping to discipline dishonest students, they are happy to ride around on their magi's shoulder or to sit out in the gardens on a sunny day eating pesky insects.
These creatures were first found by the ancient ruins of a temple deep in the Ixan jungle. One can tell when they are getting close to the ruins, as these small creatures will be seen dashing by one's feet and clinging to the bark of the great trees. At first they are hard to see, their coloring helping them blend into the mingled reds, greens and purples of flora in the tropical jungle. As one gets closer, however, they will drop their camouflage, stopping and watching along the path, as though taking stock of whoever enters their territory. Some say they are judging the hearts of those who get close, deciding if they are worthy of entering the ancient temples. This theory is supported by the fact that no temple where these creatures are common has ever been looted. They have grown more common at the Keep, and some have laid eggs there, making people think that the Keep will be protected for centuries to come.
