#994: Cypheles Crystalwing

Image
This egg has small tentacles.

Image
Spoiler
Cypheles hatchlings love to play with their magi, and will flit about in the sky to catch things their magi throws. They cannot leave water for long, however, and their wings must always be kept wet. Magi with water magic skills are therefore perfect companions for cypheles hatchlings, as they can continuously pull water out of the air to keep their cypheles happily flying about. With their magi nearby, cypheles hatchlings are much more adventurous and curious than they would be otherwise.
Image
Spoiler
Your cypheles crystalwing has become an enormous, powerful creature, with bladelike wings that can be used as fins along with tails and antennae that can monitor the ocean’s currents. While cypheles crystalwings are very dedicated to their magi, they must dive deep into the ocean to be comfortable. Their bodies are built to withstand the high pressures of the deep ocean, and they dislike being out of water for very long. Magi with cypheles creatures are typically those who lead seafaring lives, and can sail out to travel with their creature. Adult cypheles crystalwings with a magi have learned their own strength well, and can surface harmlessly if they sense their magi is nearby to say hello. With their power over water, they can help their magi, or anyone who may be in trouble on the high seas, travel to a safer place on the ocean or even to the nearest spot of land.
Image
Spoiler
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn
Spoiler
Deep beneath the oceans, so deep that no one but the most powerful of water magi have ever traveled, live the kraken. And below that, so far down that the pressures of the oceans mixed with magic can compress stone into crystals, live the cypheles crystalwings. These creatures are immensely powerful, able to create giant shifts in the ocean’s currents with one flick of their wings. They prefer to stay deep beneath the waves, monitoring the ocean’s currents with their antennae, and sightings are incredibly rare. In some places, a sighting of a cypheles is thought to foretell doom. These legends aren't necessarily wrong, as the power of a cypheles means they may inadvertently cause tidal waves or storms when they use their wings to surface.

#995: Dionych Crystalwing

Image
This horned egg is a patchwork of familiar colours.

ImageImage(m/f)
Spoiler
A dionych crystalwing hatchling is all limbs and tail, with a tendency to trip over its own claws and hooves. They're slim to start and enjoy cramming themselves through the tiniest places, at least until they grow old enough that they begin to bulk up. As hatchlings their wings are fairly useless and their awkwardness slows them down, but only for a short while. As they grow bigger, they gain control over their limbs and prove to be remarkably fast both on foot and on the wing. Hatchling dionych tend to be friendly and like to cuddle when they're not playing with each other or any other creature willing.
ImageImage(m/f)
Spoiler
An adult dionych crystalwing is a large but light creature, able to carry small loads or people but likely to dump them off in favour of stealing apples from trees. Despite this, they aren't malicious, and will usually return to their magi to beg for forgiveness with puppy-dog eyes - once they've eaten their fill. Though gentle with magi and hatchlings, they can be formidable as opponents with their horns, claws, and powerful back legs. Most magi are advised to have at least one male and one female dionych, as dark dionych are more active at night where light dionych have more energy during the day. Dionych adults use this to help trade off when they have eggs or hatchlings, ensuring their offspring always have at least one available, rested parent.
Spoiler
Dionych crystals of either colour are considered a great prize, both for their beauty and for their ability to either prevent nightmares or bring about pleasant dreams. Dionych crystalwings themselves are good companions for most magi, friendly enough that they can be trained - as long as they're kept away from apple trees - but powerful enough for defense. They're also generally easy keepers, especially if magi allow them to roam freely and ensure they can hunt enough meat to feed themselves and any hatchlings.

#996: Komainu Crystalwing

Image
Jade crystals adorn this red and gold egg.

Image
Spoiler
Komainu hatchlings are feisty almost from the moment they break free of their eggs, happily pouncing on everything that moves and some things that don't. Though quite small at first, they're determined to be fierce, and become so once they grow bigger. Along with the jade crystals on their bodies, komainu carry a jade orb with them throughout their life. They often play with this orb as they grow, though they tend to dislike anything else - including their magi - touching it.
Image
Spoiler
Adult komainu crystalwings can reach great sizes, though they seem to enjoy twisting their serpentine bodies into knots so that no one can get an actual measurement of them. When meeting as adults, komainu are respectful to each other but not as playful as when they're hatchlings. This can change for family groups or mated pairs, when they seem to be more comfortably initiating and participating in play. Though generally too large and fluffy to really cuddle with their magi, komainu seem to enjoy resting their head in their magi's lap and having their mane or that awkward place between their antlers given a good scratch.
Spoiler
Komainu are considered omens of great luck and power, but only so long as they still carry the jade orb they hatched with. Fortunately it's very difficult to separate a komainu from its orb, but those few that lose theirs are said to also lose their bright colouring and their good tempers. Komainu crystalwings are generally happy creatures, with some magi saying they've heard their komainu laugh at a particularly good joke. Though generally a creature of deserts, komainu can adapt to colder climates, and are said to carry a lot of body heat that their magi can take advantage of on chilly days.

#997: Iwan Crystalwing

Image
This egg is heavy but soft and warm to the touch.

Image
Spoiler
Juvenile iwan crystalwings are at their most vulnerable right after they hatch. Although already able to breathe fire, they are small and easily snatched up by passing hawks or eagles. They can give any predator a nasty nip or burn if they like, and if lucky enough to be dropped, will lazily glide to the ground and scuttle off to safety. As they grow older, their scales become harder and their weight helps them avoid predation.
Image
Spoiler
Iwan crystalwings have a particular fondness for grapes and are easy to befriend if one carries enough on a regular basis. They get along well with the other fire-based creatures at the Keep - as well as any fire-based creatures can get along - though they rarely do anything resembling play once they reach a certain size. The crystalwings prefer to sit and watch the machinations of the other creatures, only contributing to the roughhousing of hellhound pups or overly-enthusiastic dragons by blowing angry puffs of smoke if they get too loud. Curiously, although they begrudgingly tolerate other creatures, iwan crystalwings grow readily irate at their own kind outside of the breeding season, often bobbing their heads to establish a small territory (usually a basking rock) which the other iwan crystalwing should avoid under any circumstance.
Spoiler
A tropical species originating in the Candle Archipelagos, iwan crystalwings can be found throughout the Ixan Jungle and wherever it is warm and wet in the east. They are resplendent creatures, frequently found lounging in the sun and feasting on ripe fruit. They're too large to move without help from a strong companion, and with only a few predators in their native range, iwan crystalwings tend to grow complacent around people. As a result, they will often wander into houses and onto ships, readily making their homes there whether it is convenient for the owner of the domicile or vessel in question.

#998: Lesoni Crystalwing

Image
This is a soft brown egg, with a shiny protrusion that looks like a tail.

Image
Spoiler
Lesoni hatchlings are nearly helpless at first, with their wings and the gems on their bodies weighing them down. They will cuddle with their magi, content to snuggle into their pockets or in their arms, just so long as they are close. Every so often they test their wings by spreading them and feeling the wind wash over them. As soon as they learn to fly, there is no hiding from them—they will always know where their magi is, and will ride on their shoulders or hover slowly behind them, happy to be near.
Image
Spoiler
Lesoni crystalwings are gorgeous creatures, their tails and bodies lined with gems that shimmer like water on a sunny day. Despite their beauty, they are a bit clumsy in the air, as though their wings are new to them. They are content to flutter over the reeds by quick-moving streams, eating insects that flit by. Once they hover over the water and dive, however, they are incredibly graceful. Despite looking very much like Lakiran platypi, they tend to avoid still water, preferring the quick-running water of the stream or other moving bodies of water. With their wings, they have even traveled to the oceans, although the salt water can make their fur look bunched and scraggly. Wherever they go, they love being near their magi. Like their Lakiran cousins, they are more than happy to bring their magi valuables they find on the floor of rivers or streams. However, more often than valuable gems or artifacts, they commonly bring their magi eggs they find that may have otherwise been overlooked.
Spoiler
No one is sure where these enigmatic creatures originated. The only theory comes from the journal of a traveling magi who followed the stream’s path for days, walking on foot without aid of any sort of magic. According to their journal, as the magi walked, a small lakiran platypus egg bobbed along beside them, a forgotten egg from the times when the stream becomes overrun with them. It even floated past Lake Lakira, where adult Lakiran platypi typically pick up care of eggs passed over by magi. After days of traveling, and floating for the egg, it finally washed up on the riverbank next to an old, moss-covered carving of a crystalwing. The magi moved to pick it up, feeling sorry for the lonely egg, when it hatched into a winged platypus that looked very much like the crystalwing on the carving. The magi went on to write that the egg itself had wished for it, and that the fate of all forgotten lakiran platypus eggs that flood the stream is to travel here, where they can become a creature magi will want more. Of course, that’s only speculation. What is known to be true is that a lesoni crystalwing can always be relied on to find things, creatures, or even people that are lost.

#999: Sacer Crystalwing

Image
This double-winged egg grows warm and bright when set in the sunlight.

Image
Spoiler
Hatchling sacer crystalwings are small enough to fit in the palm of a child's hand, which is also where they like to curl up if the temperature drops even a fraction. Drawn to warmth and light, groups of sacer hatchlings often pile together in sunny patches, beneath blankets, and in front of ovens and fires. Those living in the desert climes that sacer crystalwings prefer need to watch their feet when walking on sun-warmed stones, lest they accidentally step on a snoozing hatchling.
Image
Spoiler
Even as adults, sacer crystalwings are small in size, light enough to drape comfortably over a magi's shoulders. They're also incredibly lazy and will happily sleep for all but a few hours during the hottest part of the day, which is also when no other creature or magi really wants to do anything. Adult sacer crystalwings are ambivalent parents at best and tend to ignore each other outside of the breeding season. Crystals gathered from sacer adults can create a bright light when charged in the sun, and are often used both as decoration and combined with other materials to create panels that absorb heat for distribution into homes.
Spoiler
Sacer crystalwings like nothing better than to lie in the sun and will complain if anyone or anything tries to make them move. They rely on their speed and small size if they're ever in danger, but as they generally taste burnt no matter what, few creatures bother to eat them. They're not hostile creatures but seem to view most magi as walking heaters rather than companions or friends. Just being awake appears to annoy them; when looking for food or a proper sunbeam, they tend to grumble in disgruntlement to themselves.

#1000: Ouranian Koi

Image
This egg sparkles like the stars.

Image
Spoiler
The full moon has risen, turning the stream into a gleaming silver ribbon as you float in the water seeking relief from the lingering heat of the day. What would normally be a mirror smooth surface is filled with ripples as your ouranian koi hatchling plays tag with others of its kind before darting off to inspect a sleeping otter. It will be some time before it is strong enough to leave on an interstellar journey but there is no hurry. For now you are content to drift in the current and watch the stars above as your koi hatchling excitedly leaps over you, water droplets glittering as it splashes your face.
Image
Spoiler
Summer nights at the Keep are warm, the breeze soft and gently perfumed with the scent of honeysuckle and night blooming jasmine. Most nights find you and several of your friends climbing one of the highest towers, bringing carpets and pillows to rest upon as you eagerly watch the skies for what many assume to be falling stars. A gasp from your neighbor draws your attention to the east and you watch in delight as ouranian koi swim across the sky, bright gold and cool silver trails of stardust burning in their wake as they return to the stream. A year ago your favorite koi nudged your hand in goodbye before joining others of its species as they set out to explore the stars. Ouranian koi tend to travel for decades each trip so it is unlikely your koi has returned, but the excited voices drifting from the direction of the stream tell you that tonight many other magi have reunited with old friends.
Spoiler
The largest and longest lived of all koi, ouranian koi are also among the most unusual. They easily attain lengths of over fifteen feet and are the preferred battle mounts of the merfolk who will often ride ouranian koi in attacks against pirates and others they deem invaders. Ouranian koi are also favorites with magi who study the stars, for these koi will spend decades and sometimes even centuries travelling through space to visit distant worlds before returning to the stream. The patterns on their scales are said to be depictions of the planets they have visited, and indeed koi who have traveled together often carry near identical patterns which has led to many scrolls and books in the library filled with intricate drawings and essays detailing which stars the koi are believed to have traveled to. No one is quite certain why ouranian koi are so driven to make these journeys but many believe that if life exists elsewhere, these koi are vital to its beginnings.

Oh cool, that's a great way to celebrate. :D Thanks, guys! I'm not keen on any of the older art for those Donis, but it's cool to see them available. A fitting reward, I know they're all super valuable.

Congrats on 10 years, everyone! I just joined like... two years ago, but this site is really great.
