My point was that, no, a croc's head isn't what makes a Magi Ammit an Ammit since the Magi Ammit isn't an Ammit as it has already been altered to remove a factor critical to the creature's design and meaning simply for aesthetic. You can't tell people that a certain feature is the 'deciding' feature when you've already flat out ignored other aspects and you're basically already at the point of "in name only".BBkat wrote:I was just linking it for the images of the mythical creature that the MS one was based on and how they always have a crocodile head. I *know* the MS creatures are not the same the ones they're based on, appearance or lore wise (case in point the Chimera that was also, the actual Chimera from Greek mythology was also part dragon or serpent-it's been depicted breathing fire and having wings and a snake tail)
Believe it or not, this is a huge issue that many, many people have accidentally walked into for a very long time, in several ways.
Not just with the Thunderbirds on Magi that never should have been done. (we're shoving a bit into your god's mouth and putting a saddle on it's back and treating it like a flying horse, hope you Native's don't mind!) But it comes up in art, TV and movies constantly. There's the Hannibal show that "put antlers on it" and treated the Wendigo as an art-deco aesthetic. Baphomet* in New Adventures of Sabrina which is actually all male instead of the male/female duality that Baphomet is suppose to represent. There an Artist's statue in San Jose of "Quetzalcoatl" that is commonly referred to as "The Dog Poo". Pretty much all of Supernatural's use of runes and glyphs. Insert your favorite movie about demons or possession, religion, or ghosts and mythology here.
* I am fully aware that Sabrina's Baphomet was cited for copyright and trademark infringement by the ToS - who actually created the All Male Baphomet on purpose as a way of trolling people who don't know what they are mad about. To really unravel that whole mess I'm going to need a flow chart to illustrate about 5 levels deep of trolling that's going on.
It actually really does happen a lot. If it's in name only, that's fine. Run with it. Have fun. Just know about the viper-nest of appropriation you're going to walk into when you attempt to point to a myth to defend choosing one aspect over another.
