Bump button

Post by Morgaln »

Edit March 26:

The kinks have been worked out and the bump button is now working properly. To alleviate some of the complaining, the bump interval has been reduced to 20 hours, meaning a topic can be bumped 20 hours after the last post (or the last bump if there haven't been any posts in the meantime).

Edit March 23:
There are some kinks in this feature that we did not anticipate. Until those can be changed, we are going back to allowing posting a bump once a day, with EST/EDT being used as the time zone to determine when one day ends and another one starts.

I've changed permissions and enabled the bump button in every section that allows bumps to be used once per day. From now on, the following global rule is in effect:
For those forums and subforums that allow bumping, you may bump your own threads once every 24 hours. To bump, you must use the bump button at the bottom of your thread. If that button is not showing up, you are not allowed to bump that particular thread. Making a post to bump a thread is not allowed.
The following forums currently have the bump button enabled:

Tea House (main section)
Seller's Gallery
Living Art
Roleplay Stage (main section)
Private Stage
Merchant District (all sections)
If you need help finding the bump button, here's a screen shot:

I've had to play around with permissions a lot to get this done. If you notice something wonky or if you're unable to do something you were able to do before, I've probably changed some setting I shouldn't have. In that case drop me a PM and I'll check what caused it.

Edit: I didn't properly explain how this works exactly, my apologies for that. Here's how the system handles this button:

You can only bump a thread that hasn't been posted in for at least 24 hours. If you or anyone else made a post within the last 24 hours, the bump button will not appear.
For example, Master Belmos last posted in the current Nursery auction at 3:15 pm EDT on May 19, when he created the topic. Even though that was more than 24 hours ago, he cannot bump it since the last post in the thread at this moment was on 5:35 pm EDT today, and that is less than 24 hours ago.
In other words, you may only bump a thread if you don't get any activity for 24 hours.

Awesome! thank you Morg!
Hawke's IRL fiance, Lunaroki, suffered a massive stroke and died on Tuesday, March 31st, 2015.

Hawke needs to concentrate on other things, and is leaving MS permanently.

Thank you all for many fun years.

What about posts with replies to people, updates et cetera? If I want to reply to someone, to say thanks for buying or to notify people that something has been uptaded by making a new post, is it still allowed and is simply not counted as bump? If not, how am I supposed to communicate with my customers?

Also, my MD threads were bumped yesterday (EDT), but do not have the button, is it supposed to be like that? Do we have to wait exactly 24 hours before being able to bump again (like, if I bumped my thread at 5 pm EDT, I'll only be able to do it at 5 pm the next day)?

If the latter is true, maybe it would make sense to make the button work every new day according to EDT? Sometimes I (and I guess/hope I'm not the only one like that) forget and bump my topics at around 3 am my time or so (which is 7 pm EDT) - it would be very inconvenient to have to stay up that late to bump them again next time, and missing a day seems unfair.

Things like replies to buyers and updates are not considered bumps by the mods and are allowed to be made. However, they system will consider them bumps. I didn't explain this properly in the first post and will edit it soon to do so, my apologies for that:

You can only bump a thread that hasn't been posted in for at least 24 hours. If you or anyone else made a post within the last 24 hours, the bump button will not appear.
For example, Master Belmos last posted in the current Nursery auction at 3:15 pm EDT on May 19, when he created the topic. Even though that was more than 24 hours ago, he cannot bump it since the last post in the thread at this moment was on 5:35 pm EDT today, and that is less than 24 hours ago.
In other words, you may only bump a thread if you don't get any activity for 24 hours.

By necessity, that does mean the time you bump each day is very likely to be at least one second (and most probably more) than the day before, and in the long run, you might not be able to bump during the time you can be on the site on a certain day. You'll then be able to bump again as soon as you log in on the next day, however. It's something you'll just have to live with.

Thank you for the explanation, Morgaln.

Is tweaking that system technically possible? So that bumps can be done at any time but only once per day EST/EDT? I would love to post a thread in the suggestions section to see if anyone else supports the idea, or possibly to PM Tristan to ask if it can be done. May I do it?

Changing it the way you want would require Tristan to recode part of the phpBB software, since it is not in the usual possible settings. You could make the suggestion, but I'll tell you right now that this is a rather unlikely thing to happen. We've got more important stuff for Tristan to code, and we should give this system a few weeks to actually take effect and see how it works before we think about tweaking it.

I just bumped a couple of my threads and I noticed there is a loop problem, similar to bookmarking a thread.

Also, if I have the last post in a thread, I can see the Bump button, even if I didn't start the thread - I don't know if it actually works though ^^;

Sweet! That should make bumping a little easier. No more will we have to wonder if it's been 24 hours or not. :P

@Morgaln - Alright, got it, thank you.

Thing is, we didn't use to bother about 24 hours: one simply wasn't allowed to bump a thread twice in one day. So you could bump your LTS at 9 pm and then bump it at 1 pm the next day - it used to be fine. Now, on the contrary, one needs to wait for 24 hours, so you won't be allowed to bump it before those 24 hours pass - I think that way everyone is going to end up missing one day once in a while, unless they post the exact same second as last time.

I really dislike it, to be honest xD It was nice to have at least some freedom concerning bumping. But well, let's see how it goes...

Thank you for this Morgaln! Now I don't have to fill my threads with " :bounce: "
We're probably all going to miss bumping on some days, whether someone else posted and messed up our rhythm or we just forgot. While the bump resetting at midnight EDT would be ideal, I think I'll be happy enough like this. I'm also used to occasionally missing a day with strict time based events(with creature breeding and things on other sites), though.
