Chapter 31 - Hellfire

"You guys hungry? I bought some food from Voltar at the festival." Zach said as the group sat in a circle, warming their hands around a fire. April looked up from stroking Keema and nodded.

"Okay."

The air magi set out an assortment of fruits, vegetables, and desserts, all of which made the magi's mouths water. The food was gone within moments, the hunger in the magi's bellies becoming overwhelming. As soon as the meal was finished, April looked at the unicorns and then at Marina.

"Marina, could you stay with the creatures?"

"Sure, I guess so."

April smiled. "Thanks."

"Lir will protect you." Pheona chuckled as she patted the unicorn's back. Lir neighed and tossed his head and stomped his hoof, shaking his mane once before fixing his gaze on Marina.

"So...where exactly are we supposed to be going?"

"I'd guess to the top of the volcano."

Zach looked around as the group of four walked up the mountain - luckily, there was already a trail carved in the rock. The group had decided to continue during the day, even if it was hotter. Blazing heat rays traveled from the sun, seemingly directed on the magi. Pheona, however, didn't mind.

As the group approached the top of the volcano, a giant crater loomed before them. "Well...this is it."

April peered into the large depression, wondering what they were supposed to do. Hellfire, I have come after all these years...you shall no longer be in existence! The time has come for you to perish...
You shall not survive this time!

A deep laughter emitted from the crater, echoing in the nothingness of the desert. And what makes you think this? Every time you have challenged me, you have lost. And what are these puny magi doing here? Did you bring recruits? Hah. They are no match to my superior power!

The ground began to rumble, a shaking sound booming in the air. Suddenly, a large black body emerged from the crater, roaring ferociously and huffing a breath of smoke. You all shall perish!

Lava began spilling out of the even larger depression, flowing freely onto the rocks that melted in the sudden heat. It didn't take long for the liquid heat to reach the bottom of the mountain, and now it crawled along the desert floor.

A burst of flame from the beast's mouth alerted the magi of what was going on - they jumped out of the way just in time to avoid the fire. "Holy shit! It's a void dragon!" April yowled in surprise as a rock tumbled out from beneath her, sliding her foot in a slit to avoid falling. She pulled herself up quickly and summoned a stream of water, hurling it at the dragon with force.

What is that supposed to do? The void dragon grinned evilly, slapping the stream with its tail and sending droplets flying everywhere. April stumbled backward and pressed herself up against the rock, breathing heavily from using so much magic at once - especially in the desert, where her water magic was draining rapidly from the intense heat.

Rynu summoned vines from the rock where the drops splattered, sending them up to the dragon and tying them around his legs and wings. The void dragon chuckled and snapped the vines just by a twitch of its wings or legs, sending them falling back down to the earth magi. Rynu's eyes narrowed in confusion and anger.

Pheona stepped forward and sent fireballs at the attacker, holding her stance as the rocks fell. Rynu looked over at the lava, which was pouring onto the desert. "Marina!" He gasped, leaping off a rock and making his way down the mountain.

"Rynu! What are you doing!?" April called as she blasted the dragon with water again. Rynu ignored the water magi and continued to make his way down the volcano, leaping over the rocks and running swiftly. "Rynu!"

The void dragon glanced at the earth magi and smirked, spitting fire in front of his feet so that the volcano was surrounded by a wall of flame - there was no way in, or out. Rynu skidded to a halt in front of the fire, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. He looked up at the dragon and clenched his fists in anger, sending vines with thorns up to him.

Zach looked at Pheona as she continued spitting fire at the dragon, using his wind currents to guide the flame directly to the dragon. The oxygen in the air was enough to allow the fire magi to continuously fire, so long as she didn't become tired.

Marina looked up from cradling the tienko in her arms, squinting at the orange liquid in the distance. Is that...lava?! Oh my God, it is!

She scrambled to her feet and nudged Lir, pointing to the lava with her elbow. The unicorn's eyes widened as he stared, ignoring Marina as she mounted him. "Go!"

Lir reared up on his hind legs, whinnying loudly and telling the other unicorns to follow. Keema ran beside the unicorns as the group fled from the lava. "I hope Rynu's okay..."

The void dragon swooped down to the magi, grabbing Pheona and April in his paws and flying back up into the air. April and Pheona screamed, kicking the creature's massive claws in an attempt to make him let go. Hellfire only smirked and looked down at the two males. Now you don't want to hurt me, do you? I could crush these girls as easily as you could crush an ant.

Rynu and Zach glanced at each other before nodding, summoning all of their power and aiming it at the beast's stomach. Hellfire roared in pain and dropped the magi, gazing at his injury for a moment until he looked at Rynu and Zach. You have not won this fight, my gentlemen.

The void dragon swooped down at the two magi, slamming into the rocks and huffing a breath of fire. Rynu managed to escape, but Zach had nowhere to go. The earth magi glanced back at the air magi. "Just go!" Zach spat from behind a wall of fire. Rynu did as he was told and ran for the two girls, who were still falling. The earth magi summoned vines to catch them, and they were greeted by a comfortable bed of plants. Before the two could thank Rynu, the earth magi had leapt into the vines and jumped over the wall of flame.

"He's going for Marina...he'll never make it! She's too far out!" April said to Pheona, glancing over at the dragon and gasping as she heard Zach screaming in agony. "Zach!"

The water magi forced herself up and began running over to her friend, using a little of her water magic to help her glide smoothly over the rocks. "Zach!" She screamed, blasting the fire with water and watching as Zach lay on the ground. Hellfire glanced at April and laughed evilly, breathing in deeply and preparing to spit on the air magi with fire. "No!"

April leapt next to Zach with a swift movement of her feet, covering the two with a bubble of water as the fire dissipated. The air magi looked at April - but his eyes had changed. Instead of a chocolatey brown, they were now a light blue. April grinned softly before looking back up at the dragon as it battled Pheona.

April stood and ran toward the dragon, leaping onto its back and climbing to its mouth. If I can just reach his mouth, I can drown him with water...

You think you can hide your thoughts from me, foolish water magi? I can hear everything!

Hellfire reared up on his hind legs, sending April flying. The water magi closed her eyes and held her head, but was surprised when she was greeted by a distant feel of...scales?

April looked behind her to see the starry form of a celestial dragon.
Celeste.

Chu stupid earth magi! Marina is no soft blonde!

Rynu haz soft spot for Marina, methinks. Even though he's not my character.

Chapter 32 - The Mornings After
The starry dragon roared and flew to Hellfire, screeching and slamming into the void dragon with force. Hellfire screamed in protest, turning and spitting fire at Celeste. Celeste avoided the attack and spat her own fire at the void dragon, grinning in satisfaction as it slightly burned his wings.

The two dragons fought for what seemed like forever until Hellfire could take no more. With one final hit, Celeste spat fire at the void dragon and shut her eyes tightly as he screamed, floating into the air in a writhing, burning mass. In just a few seconds, Hellfire bursted into a million ashes, black specks falling to the ground and sparkling in the harsh afternoon sun. On the ground stood a large black obsidian rock, lava glowing on the inside.

Thank you, my children. Without your help, I could not have defeated the evil that lurked in these lands. Celeste looked over the three magi, glancing around for the missing one. Where is the earth magi?

Pheona, April, and Zach all looked at each other and burst out into laughter, wiping tears from their eyes as they turned back up to face Celeste. April pointed to the black blob running in the desert, holding her mouth with one hand to keep herself from giggling. Still chasing after that young girl, eh? Silly Rynu. Celeste shook her head, a gentle laughter echoing in the arid desert. She glanced at the lava and fire, blowing on it with icy breath and having it evaporate away into the sun.

April sat up in her chair, looking at her lap to see the head of a light zalon. Angel sniffed the magi's hand briefly before stepping back and allowing April to get up. April smiled, but remained seating, thinking back to the days before. She thought about the large fight with Celeste and Hellfire, and how Zach had almost died. She thought about the long journey to Voltar and the wonderful festival that the group had experienced while they were there.

A gentle tug on April's pajama pants alerted her that Angel wanted to play. The zalon bent down and wagged her rear in the air, barking playfully. "Hush, you'll wake the cats up! Let's go outside, but be quiet."

The two snuck out of the building and dashed out into the grass, April laughing as they ran and Angel hovering above the air. The water magi grabbed a stick and waved it around in her hand, throwing it as far as she could and waiting for her zalon to bring it back. Angel flew after the stick, snatching it in her mouth and hurrying back over.

The two played for awhile until they became tired, wandering over to the stream that emptied into the pool and sitting next to it. After a few moments, April looked at Angelica and blinked, grinning. "Wanna go to the waterfall?" April said through deep pants. Angelica nodded excitedly and panted. "Cool. Lemme go change and I'll be right back out!"

April dashed into the keep, tip-toeing through the mass of kittens that slept on the floor and into her bedroom. She opened her dresser and picked out a loose t-shirt, some baggy capris and socks, closing the wooden case and throwing her clothes on. April found her shoes and quickly tied them on her feet, grabbing a light jacket. After tying her shoes, she grabbed a few blankets and a pillow, shoving them into a bag, Before she left, April grabbed the bag. Then she was off, dashing outside as quietly as she could and running over to Angel. "Do ya think 'Nilla will be okay without you?"

Angel barked, thinking about her pup for a moment before heading toward the slope. Trees covered the entrance, but the gentle sound of the stream that trickled through the rock would guide the two toward the mountain. April grinned and followed her zalon, looking at her keep once before hurrying up the rocks.

When the two reached the waterfall, it was late afternoon. They'd have to camp here for the night - but neither of them would mind. April reached inside her bag and pulled out the blanket, putting it over Angel as the zalon lay on the ground. "I'm gonna go find a suitable shelter - wanna come?"

Angel looked at April with sky blue eyes, her head resting on her paws. "Guess not, I'll be back in a bit." April chuckled.

It took a few minutes for April to find a shelter - it was a large cave near the waterfall. Actually, it was behind the waterfall. "Angel! C'mon! I found a shelter!"

The zalon stood up, barking and grabbing the blanket in her mouth - she couldn't see where her magi was! Grinning to herself, April formed a ball of water as Angel whined and sent it out. The ball of water led the zalon to the cave.

"This is gonna be fun." April grinned, reaching her hand out to touch the icy cold water. It was dark in the cave - a fire would do them nicely. The water magi thought for a moment, grabbing some sticks that lay in the far corner of the cave and tossing them into a pile. Then she recalled a simple fire spell that she had learned at the Keep in Survival class.

It wasn't long until April and Angel were feasting on non-magical fish and some fresh berries that the two had picked themselves. With a full stomach, the pair was staring out at the waterfall. April could see the very top of Herbal Grace from the cave - an amphiptere sat on the top, staring into the sky. The water magi instantly recognized her stony draconian friend, Rockie.

Before long, the pale moon hung in the sky, accompanied by millions of little blue stars. April and Angel lay in the cave, laughing and gazing at the night sky. "Well, I'm going to sleep. Goodnight, Angel."

April turned over to the side and pulled up the blanket, making sure to leave some for Angel. With her head on a soft pillow and her body cushioned by the other blankets, April quickly fell asleep in the cool cave behind the waterfall.
