Chapter 24 - Wind Traveller

April and Keema had already began their journey to Arkene before noon - Keema was having nightmares and was constantly tossing and turning in the bed. April decided that it was best for them to keep moving, and so the two had quickly eaten breakfast and carried on.

The early morning snow was harsh and blinding - April had to keep a hand on Keema at all times just to ensure that she didn't lose her companion. The telvian panther squinted in the white nothingness that surrounded the two like water and a fish. However, they knew that they had to continue if they wanted to meet this mysterious person, and so they pushed on.

"Keema...can you see it? I see it! The outlines of the trading posts! We made it! We actually made it..." April heaved a sigh of relief and fell onto the snow, flailing her arms and legs about in joy. The telvian panther made a low murmuring sound and joined her Magi, diving into the white powder and squirming around. It took a few moments for the pair to let loose all their happiness, and once they did, they started the short trek to the cabins.

Walk forward...and watch what you say, the ice dragons are listening...

A mysterious voice was carried in the wind, breezing past April's ears gently. "Did you hear that, Keema?" The telvian panther shook her head and looked up at her Magi, yellow eyes full of confusion. "Hm. Maybe it was just me."

After an hour or so of traveling in Arkene, there was still no sight of the mysterious person. April and Keema had treated themselves to a hot lunch at one of the trading posts for a few gold pieces - but they couldn't wait forever. Where am I supposed to go? As soon as the water Magi walked outside, the breeze carried the same voice as earlier.

Go to the farthest north of Arkene...there you will find me...

April stood there in the snow, confused. What did this voice want her for? Sighing, she began to walk north with her telvian panther reluctantly. If she had a choice, she'd still be in that cabin enjoying her warm soup. It took a while for the two to travel far north - the sun was sinking, but wasn't quite near the horizon yet. Somewhere in the middle of afternoon and evening.

You are almost there...keep traveling...

"How?! I've been traveling all day! Where am I supposed to go?" April suddenly shouted out to no-one in particular. The rage had been slowly building up inside her, boiling and heating up. After a few moments of silence, the voice finally responded.

Keep going, young Magi...there is a task ahead...

April was exhausted - she had travelled as far north as she could handle.

Keep going...you're almost there...

The water Magi heaved a sigh and continued on, Keema trailing a little ways behind. Soon, a white pillar with shimmering crystals was visible in the distance. April gasped and stopped in her tracks, she knew what this was. She had read about it in the legends book she had come into possession of.

It was the pillar of Celeste and the frozen tears of Archex.

Walk forward, young Magi...

April did as she was told and strode forward, Keema now trotting a steady pace beside her. Once she had reached the pillar, April could see the vague outlines of three other people that were around the block. As the fog slowly revealed the people, April could make out who they were.

Zach, Pheona, and Rynu.

"Wha-What are you guys doing here?"

Pheona and Rynu looked at April, their eyes full of confusion. "I don't know." Pheona said suddenly, "A strange voice called us here."

"Same here." Zach called out from beside the block.

Hush, my young ones. I have called you here to embark on a task...you are all the four elements. The four elements that shaped this very land that we walk on. Water, the giver of healing and speed...

April could feel a soft sensation, like something had just given her a big hug, around her body. It was relaxing and soothing, like the gentle trickle of a stream.

Fire, the giver of death and rebirth...

Pheona nodded, her fiery red eyes standing out brightly in the snow. April wondered what she felt. It must be something warm and exciting.

Earth, the giver of courage and strength...

Rynu looked at the pillar, his green eyes focused on something that the others couldn't see. His skin was pale from having no shelter from the cold, but it quickly regained its normal color as the voice spoke again.

And air, the giver of silence and peace...

Zach closed his eyes gently, his bright blue cloak being buffeted softly by an unseen breeze. He sighed, and April could see a smile creasing his lips.

You are all different from one another...but are alike in so many ways...fire, water, earth, and air. The elements...of creation.

You are exactly what I need.

Chapter 25 - Sleepless Night

April, Pheona, Rynu, and Zach all looked at each other in confusion. "And why do you need us?"

An ancient evil has risen from his resting place, far to the south, past Voltar...you must stop him...

April groaned. This was how it always ended up - having to fight a dark spirit. Nobody could ever just talk it out anymore, no, because that was too easy. Zach glanced at her, his chocolate brown eyes full of agreement, as though he could read her thoughts.

"All the way in Voltar? That's on the other side of the map!" Rynu said grumpily, black hair falling into his face.

Yes, I know that Rynu...but it is a task that you cannot refuse...

"How the hell do you know his name?" Zach pitched in, his eyes full of confusion.

I know everything...even your deepest secrets are not safe in my presence...

Everything was silent for a few moments as the Magi thought. Pheona was leaning against Rynu for warmth - even her fire magic couldn't keep her safe from the cold. The earth Magi looked down at his cousin, his face pale from the blinding snow.

You must travel to Voltar on your own, but for now I must go...I shall whisper words of wisdom to you as you journey...

The voice was silent, leaving the four Magi standing there in the snow.

"Well...shit. Let's go to Voltar, I guess." April said as she began walking south with Keema. Zach nodded and followed, pulling up his hood. Pheona and Rynu exchanged a tired glance and caught up with the two.

Night had fallen by the time the four had reached Synara, and like when April passed through, two rooms were paid for. One for the guys and one for the gals. Pheona and April quickly got themselves situated, figuring out how early they were going to get up and whatnot. The two lay on their separate beds and chatted back and forth.

"...Pheona?"

"Yeah?"

"What do you think this is all about?"

The fire Magi was silent for a moment as she thought. "I don't know."

"Oh. Okay, goodnight."

"Goodnight."

Zach sat on his bed, thinking. It was past the middle of the night and he was still awake - he really needed to sleep. Instead, he held his head in his hands as he thought about what the voice had said.

"Rynu - you up?"

"Yeah, what." A grumbled voice sounded from the opposite bed.

"...nevermind."
