Gifting is only available during special events, yes. Usually Magiversary (Site Anniversary), Halloween and Christmas.

Trading WILL come back, so while you can not trade right now, it will be available again sooner or later. You can make trade deals right now, however, gold and creature transfers will have to be on hold until Trading is fixed again. Kind of, like pre-ordering or "holding" the trade until it can be physically completed.

Another question about crafting. How is it that I was able to obtain materials? I don't have any of the gemdragons/crystal wings (aside from the one I just crafted).
Is it that whenever you click someone else's relevant egg/hatchling you have a chance of getting the item? Definitely not complaining, just wondering.

Yes. For the Artificer crystalwing dragons, click on them or go to the Bestiary and click on them and the Rewin dragons. That's the only way to get the Pygmies. They don't have to be in your lair to obtain the items needed.

They are a pain in the behind to breed some/most of the time - it's not just you.
