Actually, I have done some research on Thestrals, I can find NO reference to that specific creature outside of JK Rowling's work. There are some skeletal horses, but nothing that specifically resembles a Thestral. As for Lycan, that specific term (derived from the more common Lycanthrope) is, as far as my research indicates, specific to those movies. Lycanthrope is not specific to the movies. Werewolf is not specific to the movies, but both of those have been rejected. The historical werewolves are called werewolves or lycanthrops.
In either case, you would need to provide documentation and citations of such creatures existing outside of the bounds specified (JK Rowling's work for the Thestrals, and for Lycans you would have to find reference to a creature that is NOT a werewolf, and also not unique to the Underworld series.) Now you can just suggest a rabid wolf-like creature, but we already have direwolves so that might come under too similar to something we already have.

I just suggested that. Well, in a roundabout way.kevin19980609 wrote:Maybe zombie Gryphon and other creatures?
Anyone can copyright anything. It's really annoying. You know Disney has a copyright on CINDERELLA?? HOW??? I wrote I really funny spoof of it and wanted to submit it to the school magazine, but they couldn't take it!

Re: Official Creature Suggestion Thread
My suggestion is: How about a Pyrassoupi maybe?
The Pyrassoupi is a desert-dwelling Unicorn. It is different from the majestic, forest dwelling varieties due to its shaggy coat and tangled mane; but what really sets it apart is the fact that it has not one, but two horns on its forehead.
On first glance, you could mistake one for an Arabian Oryx or other common desert-dweller. But the Pyrassoupi's horns point forward's like a regular unicorn and not backwards like an antellope's.
Here's a picture I found.
And a description.
I know it's similar to the Unicorn, but old donation creatures won't come back anyway.

Re: Official Creature Suggestion Thread
I've never heard of those people, and I've known thestrals and werewolves for many years before I've even heard of the Underworld series. Yeah, maybe someone came up with something that became famous, thus making all these creatures 'copyrighted' to it, that's not true. Those beasts have been made up way back then in myths, legends. But like my oppinion matters nor does my reasoning matters either, anything I mention always has some kind of 'movie' or 'book' that has become famous and claims "Oh, this creature belongs to" whoever made that book or movie.....not true, they are old creatures but nobody seems to understand or see that.
And it takes more than one person's findings to say "No, they're copyrighted" or "Yes, anyone can make them up". But it doesn't matter now, my subjestions or ideas would be denied anyway because they are either too original or someone has to always shoot me down because they can't find anything outside of fandom.

I want a unicorn with a whole bunch of horns, going back along its head. Like a mohawk.
On the subject of copyrights: It's pointless and annoying. I trust the staff members to have done their jobs and properly researched any suggestions before denying them as copyrighted. And in this case, as in many others, better safe than sorry. Magistream would probably be in BIG trouble if it (even accidentally) used a copyrighted creature. So why bother? There are plenty of DEFINITELY not copyrighted creatures to use, and new ones can always be made.

You can get an insperation off something and people say you just took something copyrighted.
My subjestions were the thestral and the werewolf, but I was told those creatures were 'copyrighted' by some movie or book because they are well-known. That isn't true at all, anyone cane make those up and those creatures are old in myths before those famous books/movies came out. Nobody copyrights mythical creatures, anyone can freely draw them because those ideas are what anyone can make up. Though maybe those creatures were used in books or movies....but that doesn't make them copyrighted.

Re: Official Creature Suggestion Thread
I know that, Hollow. I've been following the thread.
Besides. That's not QUITE the way it works.
True mythical creatures, like the vague idea of a chimera or a griffin can't be copyrighted. I'm not a Harry Potter fan, so I have no clue about the Thestral (sp?) thing. But if Rowling invented it and made it a mythical beast in her book (as in, the world of Harry Potter), it doesn't automatically translate to a true mythical creature.
Forgive me, I'm rambling...
Also, I think people can copyright specific designs. Like, if I draw a super cool chimera that I just absolutely love, I can copyright my specific design, but not all the chimeras on the planet.
I hope that made sense.

That's how I see things in mythical creatures, anyone can make them up, anyone can draw a different design of the creature and it can be named a dragon, thestral, lycan, whatever and it still be alright to post on the computer. Sure the name is well-known, but you can make up your own kind of that species and it be safe to use.
