Calaveras Monkey #535

General

The calaveras monkeys, native to the Candle Archipelagos, gather in large groups to socialize and play. The monkeys have mainly black fur and would blend in to their surroundings but for the colorful swirls and patterns their fur gets as they age. The tales of the indigenous people on the Archipelagos regard the calaveras monkeys as messengers between the living and the dead and hold the creatures in high regard. Trays of fruit and nuts dipped in honey are often left outside to honor the monkeys who in turn delight themselves to a treat and then suddenly collapse. A calaveras monkey can appear completely lifeless for days, laying motionless, not breathing, and not a single hair moving. After a while it will get up and continue as if nothing happened. Whether or not the creature is really dead and resurrected or just in a deep state of sleep hasn't been confirmed but the possibility of the monkey actually dying and resurrecting has many scholars excited.

Egg

Intricate colorful designs decorate the surface of this sugar-white egg.

Hatchling

Calaveras monkey hatchlings are grave and silent from the moment they hatch. They can sit perfectly still for hours only turning their head to scan their surroundings. Tiny scrawls and splashes of color twist their way through the small creature's fur and get increasingly complex as time passes. The hatchlings seem to have a craving for anything sweet and fruity and they are quick to snatch up any sweets and pastries left unattended. After digesting large quantities of sweet edibles the hatchlings become even more stoic than usual.

Adult

Unlike in many other species the calaveras monkeys display play behavior mostly as adults and rarely when they are young. Adults can be seen chasing each other in spurs of bright greens, blues, and magentas and shrieking joyously. Each creature has a unique composition of colorful patterns on their fur and they spend a lot of time grooming themselves and each other to bring out the markings. As the calaveras monkey matures it grows increasingly vocal and active and requires puzzles and other mental stimulation to keep it busy to prevent all the energy from turning into mischief. An adult calaveras monkey has an acquired taste: anything the creature has eaten while growing up goes but the monkey will refuse to eat anything it hasn't tasted earlier.
