Mercurial Imp #528

General

Mercurial imps are strange creatures. They prefer the company of other mercurial imps and may even seem distant from their magi. They are small enough to live in the nooks and crannies in the Keep walls, although dark places in general are favored. Mercurial imps are keen observers, able to sit and watch the goings-on of the keep completely unnoticed. Most magi consider them unnerving or outright creepy, for it is not uncommon to turn around and find an imp watching them with pale, clear eyes, as if the imp was studying them. Sometimes magi turn around to find absolutely nothing, the imp having disappeared too fast to be seen. Imps are seen less often outside of the winter and late fall seasons.

Egg

This pale egg has a blue jewel on its shell.

Hatchling

Young mercurial imps must be kept away from food and small objects. They will steal things only to return them later in the same place, something unappreciated by most magi and that perpetuates claims that the Keep is haunted. Mercurial imp hatchlings are hard to spot, being quite small, and even harder to catch. Tasking younger students with the near-impossible task of catching one is a favorite prank of older students.

Adult

Mischievous by nature, mercurial imps often pull pranks on others, although they are largely harmless and often involve little more than a mild scare. They are calm and not easily distracted, able to focus for hours on one task. Mercurial imps are also silent, except when threatened, when they will give off weird shrieks in the hopes of frightening the threat away. Even their movement is silent, the thick pads on their feet enabling them to move as quietly as cats. They are also very surefooted, a trait owed to their origin among the crags of the Alasre range, and can be invaluable during travels for their ability to scout out the safest paths. Many magi like to keep them around simply because they seem to drive away bugs, especially spiders.
