Vanx are considered by most to be horrid little creatures. They are voracious eaters, consuming anything that moves and much that doesn't. It’s fortunate that they never stray far from water, or else the kitchens would certainly be under siege. Vanxes are also terribly hot headed, antagonizing other companions in hopes of goading them into a fight. It’s agreed that vanxes would be barred from anywhere inhabited by humans, if only they were a little larger. As is, these foul tempered beasts only reach up to a man’s hand in length, and are unable to cause much damage. This doesn’t mean they don’t try, though, snarling and snapping at any humans. Even their magi are targets, though these companions land blows too weak to cause serious harm. A vanx’s favorite past time is stalking an unsuspecting animal or human, waiting for them to let their guard down. Should their target step even one foot in water, the vanx will use the opportunity to stab and pinch at their feet. Vanx have sharp claws that draw blood quite easily.
An odd appendage that emits light is emerging from this tan egg.
With other young companions, it’s best to spend much time with them, creating bonds. Vanx hatchlings, however, are best left alone. Though they can survive above land as well as underwater, they rarely venture near The Keep. Rather, they tussle with each other and spend their days hunting for anything they can devour. Though they’ll snap anything up, vanx hatchlings prefer minnows above all else. They also mistake people’s toes for small fish far too often for it to be considered a mistake.
These companions are either tan or black in color, and easy enough to recognize. From their foreheads grow their most unique feature - a strange, thin appendage with a light shining forth from its end. When a vanx remains perfectly still on the bottom of a river or ocean, it emits a light. Small fish are attracted to it, though all they discover are their own early ends. Vanx are rarely the dinners of larger predators - those who try to make meals of them are sorely disappointed. When in extreme danger, vanxes flock together, swarming over their enemies. Hundreds of bites and scratches add up, leaving their attacker bloody and usually limping off. It’s interesting that vanx companions band together in this way, given their other social habits. Vanxes are irritable towards one another, squabbling over bits of food or for no reason at all, frenzied battles to establish dominance. Adults will even engage in mock battles with hatchlings, though they endearingly pretend to lose.
