Aurum Ox #1204

General

These creatures are best known from history books and in fanciful tales of times long past. With enormous horns that are harder than diamond, immense strength, and a body covered in natural armor-like plating, they were considered a prime tool of the Magewars. Descriptions of the wars often mention their roles as fiercely guarding encampments and leading charges across battle lines. Because of their history, for a long time they were illegal to own by anyone but the most respected and trusted of magis. It was assumed that they were violent and driven to combat. However, more recently their intelligent stoicism has come to light. While powerful and strong, they are also loyal and calm, content to guard locations and prevent, not start, any problems.

Egg

This egg has sharp horns.

Hatchling

Aurum oxen are not born with their metal-like armor. Young hatchlings will be driven to consume metal of all kinds. They favor forged metal objects like iron or copper bars, but will eat ore from the ground if they cannot find something that has already been refined. An inattentive magi will discover that these creature will happily eat coins as well. The metal they consume will contribute to enormous scales that grow on their skin, ultimately forming the armor-like plating they develop as adults. Once the armor is complete, they will eat grass like any other herbivore.

Adult

Fearsome looking and strong, Aurum oxen are used by magis to guard locations or objects of high value. They are quite content to remain in one place, and don't seem to need much food, making them a cost-effective security solution. While some still fear their history as creatures of the Magewars, their reputation is improving and they have become more popular. As long as no one is causing them harm or attempting to enter the area they guard, these placid creatures will stand stock still. Many a thief has mistaken them for an ornate statue, much to their surprise when they get too close. Even when they defending something, though, no modern aurum ox has ever done more than frighten an intruder or drive them off. They are strictly non-violent, which makes some magi wonder if modern aurum ox are truly the same species used in the wars.
