Spiders have always been considered magical in origin, although no known arachnid companions exist. Despite having no powers, the spiders who dwell in The Keep are larger than most, roughly the size of a hand. Some suppose this is due to the magical energies that the castle contains. Many magi have one or more of these creatures as pets, and they can always be seen crawling around The Keep. They stick to dark corners, and build webs in high corners of the ceilings. They are not considered nuisances, as they help with pests, and are never bothered or attacked, except by accident. Due to their size, companions have the tendency to try to eat them, so the only spiders around the castle are generally poisonous. This way they are left to their own devices, and not made into meals. You can tell if an arachnid is deadly by any bright markings on their bodies, usually crimson. Magi have connections not only with magical creatures but with most animals, and if you see a spider and pick it up, it will most likely not harm you. Still, it is best to be wary when handling a venomous spider, and to try not to startle it. It's an amusing sight to watch someone walk around one of these spiders, or see a teacher stop a lesson because a spider is walking across the writing board. Keep spiders will bite when angered, so move slowly around these proud arachnids, and at no costs disturb their webs.
