Still trying to wrap my head around it.
It so inappropriate.
A moroi is:
An unbaptized baby that was killed or buried alive and later came to life. They come out of the grave at night and do bad things that shouldn't be mentioned. Gross stuff.
Not a lot of connections with vampires if that was intended.
Just.....
Creepy.....
I assume it's inspired by the Vampire Academy books, where the "living" vampires were called Moroi (vs. the dead vampires being called Strigoi) iirc
Idk about the Vampire Academy books(I've never read'em), but they didn't come up with the names.
Strigoi and
Moroi are Romanian. Both seem to be some kind of vampire/ghost type creature that feeds on the living.
Yeah, Moroi is older than the VA books. A lot older, in fact. It's not Romanian so much as it's Slavic and it's not a vampire so much as a ghost. It's debated if it has any root in Mora - it's probable that it does stem from Mora tales, but a derivitive - a sort of ... umm.. how do I say this with kids around? A word that was created for rather adult dreams that were sometimes followed by Old Hag Syndrome. Mora being one of many of the the roots of Nightmare.
And ... actually, in folklore, 'evil' dead babies are not uncommon. At all. Infant mortality rates were not good at all until very recently and grief does some very weird messed up things to parents and to nosy neighbors. Angiak is probably the saddest of the "evil dead babies" I've come across, but it's also one of the most vicious. The point of them is /thought/ to be justice, surprisingly enough. If you look at the plot of the tales involving an Angiak, it's always the baby avenging itself.
