Adult rauna crystalwings are at their happiest when they are working together with water. Persuading a stream to turn directly into the solid rock wall, thereby slowly creating a tunnel, or letting the water wash high up on the tunnel's walls, expanding the tunnel into a cavern, gives them a sense of great joy and accomplishment. A friendly and peaceloving species, they are even willing to use this ability to assist humans, provided that they are asked politely, and given offerings of opals, their favourite food.

Female Accipito Crystalwing

Once an adult, the accipito crystalwing is a quick and agile hunter. It is not a good flyer, but it can use its wings to dash forward at great speed. There is a strict hierarchy among all accipito crystalwings at the Keep, and once one of them reaches adulthood, it has to enter into a number of duels to determine its rank. At first, magi thought that the duels involved a staring contest, as the two crystalwings would stand across each other and just watch. But by accident, it was discovered that the orange feathers on their head, wings and tail glow with a light not visible to the human eye. The two duellist make these feathers glow, with the brighter glow winning over the other. Interestingly, accipito crystalwings show great respect to phoenixes and fire gryphons, probably because their natural flames make them glow much brighter than any crystalwing can manage.

Male Osanyin Crystalwing

Adult osanyin crystalwings can grow to great sizes, though the biggest are usually guardians of forests. Although their purpose is to protect, they understand that gardens need to be harvested, and forests can be logged - though under the watchful eye of the osanyin guardians, magi are very careful to take only trees that are dead, dying, or a danger to the rest of the forest. Osanyin adults spend most of their time nurturing their territory and raising their hatchlings, but when threatened they can turn the land itself against an intruder.

Rauna Crystalwing (Water Shop)

This egg is calmest when sitting in a small bowl of water.

The rauna crystalwings are only found in the depths of the Tetzcotal jungle. There they make their home in a wide-reaching underground system of tunnels and caverns, a home they have built using their unique bond with water; Adult raunas are able to persuade any body of water to change its course. Through using the water's power they can drill through virtually anything, thus easily expanding their underground home. It is thought that this bond is at its strongest during full moon, at which time their citrine-coloured gems are rumoured to glow with the light of the moon.

It's like.... Sauna

Sauna... I didn't even realise that when coming up with the name.

I used the moon as inspiration for the name. Raka is a Hindu name which means full moon, and Luna is Latin and means moon = Rauna. I pronounce the "au" like the "ow" English speakers say in response to pain. It started out as Rakuna but I found that's too close to raccoon, so I removed the k and now it instead sounds like the old Norse name Ragna.
