Halloween Release Creatures

Post by Arrias »

Ah! I can't wait! What do you think it'll be?? Personally I think it would be awesome to have a headless horseman ally. Or some sort of Halloween themed one. We haven't gotten an Ally in a while.

NOTE
You ONLY get three Eldrich Dragons. You can receive them by throwing pumpkins at people but you ONLY get three.

Hollowjack
Image
Is this an egg or just a pumpkin?

ImageImage (black morph and blue morph)
Spoiler
A hollowjack hatchling is a mischievous creature prone to trickery; they especially seem to enjoy scaring those who stay a little too late when picking pumpkins. As hatchlings they're headless, the stump of their neck constantly bleeding, but this doesn't seem to hinder them much as they move around their patch at night. During the day a hatchling will sleep beneath the vines and is relatively harmless even if a magi happens to stumble across one. Trying to take it home, however, has been said to result in the hatchling reappearing in its patch and the foolish magi losing their own head.
ImageImage (black morph and blue morph)
Spoiler
When a hollowjack is fully grown, it chooses a pumpkin from within its patch to serve as its head, turning the pumpkin into a possessed jack-o-lantern. This seems to allow it to leave its patch and roam through the darkest hours of the night, with only bridges - and stronger creatures - to mark the edges of its territory. A hollowjack is an extremely territorial creature and is very unlikely to tolerate trespassers at all, let alone bond with those few magi who attempt to claim one as a companion. Fortunately their rarity protects most magi from accidentally encountering one, though many have told tales of the wispy green flames of their eyes spotted at a distance, signaling a hollowjack stalking through the countryside.
Spoiler
The hollowjack spends most of its life in the pumpkin patch where it hatches, waiting quietly in the shadows and beneath the vines. On dark moonless nights, especially towards the end of the year, it emerges from its patch to hunt anyone unlucky enough to be nearby. Fast and agile, its eyes burning with green flame, it will run down those in its territory and carry them away into the night, never to be seen again. Fortunately the hollowjack has one weakness: it cannot cross bridges. If any magi finds themselves being chased by a hollowjack, they know that if they can reach a bridge - and get across it - they will be safe, if unable to ever return to that area for fear that the hollowjack will remember their scent.

Amberspice Mouse
Image
This egg smells like warm pumpkin pie fresh from the oven.

Image
Spoiler
Upon hatching, your amberspice mouse looked around woozily, picked up a small piece of eggshell, and hugged it tightly before staggering into the box you had prepared and promptly falling asleep, still hugging the eggshell. A month later, your hatchling still spends most of the day sleeping in the box where it has begun collecting a small hoard. So far this hoard consists of two pencils, a small ball of brightly dyed wool yarn, one gold coin, the piece of eggshell, a small amethyst, one phoenix feather, and - most worryingly - a large golden pin you are fairly certain belongs to the Alvean student from across the hall. You console yourself with the knowledge that your amberspice mouse hasn't stolen anything truly embarrassing; well, not yet anyway.
Image
Spoiler
Amberspice mice live primarily in and around pumpkin patches where they can be found arguing over prime living space with pumpkin wyrms. Adults are fairly large, about the size of your hand, and will collect everything they can lay a paw on. Though they are active year round, they are most often seen during the autumn months when the pumpkins are ripe and ready for harvest. They build nests in hollow tree stumps and will extend these nests into the ground around the pumpkin patch as their need for storage grows. Magi who wish to keep amberspice mice are often advised to give over a small barn to support their hoarding habits as these mice continue this behaviour throughout their lives. Should you have an important item taken by an amberspice mouse, wait until autumn and then offer roasted pumpkin seeds in trade as these are their favorite treat.
Spoiler
Amberspice mice are incredibly quick and agile. They can be found anywhere and everywhere once autumn arrives, including places they are not supposed to be such as classrooms, kitchens, the library, Thane's wardrobe, and Belmos's desk. Because their fur smells of pumpkin and spices, amberspice mice were a popular pet when first introduced to the city of Synara. This excitement was quickly tempered by their kleptomaniac tendencies, a major problem in a city with so many artisans and merchants. The mice were quickly removed to the countryside, though it's rumored that more than a few amberspice mice hoards are still lost beneath the streets.

Alvean Thornweb Spider (2000g)
Image
This minuscule egg has little legs that allow it to skitter around.

Image
Spoiler
Alvean thornweb spiders are a relatively small species, hatching from eggs barely the size of poppy seeds, but they can be found all over the wilds and gardens of Alveus. The hatchlings are fully capable of hunting gnats and other small insects, but most fall prey to predators before they reach their adult size so they hatch in clusters of several hundred to increase the chances of at least one spiderling surviving. The young spiders also have a few other techniques to help them survive, like living in communal nursery webs with their siblings until they reach a week or so old. This helps them catch larger prey, though eventually the larger individuals will start to balloon away on long thin strands of silk to find their own territories. The characteristic spines of the adults don't grow in until the spiderlings have shed their exoskeleton a few times, usually around the time they are three or four weeks old. At that point, the thorns serve as the spider's main defense against predators, though they will often come together with other thornweb spiders to form social webs as adults as well.
ImageImage (red morph and blue morph)
Spoiler
Not many people aside from arachnologists and healers are especially fond of thornweb spiders, and it is rare to see them even in the Keep. Many attribute this to their intimidating appearance, with sharp thorns, large eyes, and scuttling legs, but many also attribute their low popularity to the painful stings and bites they can give if mishandled. Enthusiasts adore them and often assure people that they are surprisingly social little creatures, often interacting with other members of their communal webs and producing elaborate, color-changing displays toward larger creatures, though whether for defense or some other form of communication, no one is quite sure. The spiders are generally difficult to train, but they can become accustomed to a person's presence over time. Those who keep large colonies can even "milk" the venom from their spines with the proper tools. Each spider produces only a tiny amount of venom, so specialized extraction spells are often used on the whole colony at once, but even then it can take weeks for the spiders to replenish their venom stores. Because of the effort involved in extracting the venom, and the lack of spider farmers, thornweb venom can go for a hefty price in potions markets.
Spoiler
Seeing them outside of their native habitat, one might imagine thornweb spiders easy to spot in their homeland of Alveus, with their bright markings and distinctive thorns. The thorns, however, are partly a means of camouflage, allowing the spiders to blend into the pale branches of bramble and berry bushes in the Alvean forests. If their hiding spot is compromised, these small spiders will change color, flashing their red marks with reflective blue and waving their bodies from side to side as though to strike. These spiders are generally harmless and only bite large animals if provoked. The venom in their mandibles is the same as that which exudes from their thorn-like abdominal spines, and though deadly to small insects, it merely causes a jolt of sharp pain for humans. Like many substances found in magical creatures, thornweb venom is useful for certain spells and potions. It can be used to excruciating effect without modification to cause brief, intense amounts of pain, but most magi decry this use of the venom. The more common and acceptable use is in pain-relief tonics and salves for healing burns.

Eldritch Dragon
Image
The mere presence of this egg strikes such fear in your heart that you can't even come close enough to touch it.

Image
Spoiler
One of the most notable features of the eldritch dragon's appearance is the skeletal pattern imprinted on their skin, exacerbated in complete darkness when the individual bones faintly glow. Hatchlings live on their own without any care from their parents, fully capable of caring for themselves and scaring off potential predators with their magic. The hatchlings are surprisingly docile, and because they do not exude their fear-inducing magic at all times as the adults, they can be approached by non-magical people when their guard is down. This has led to a number of unfortunate incidents over the years. One tale describes a farmer stumbling upon a young eldritch dragon in Silva Forest and, thinking the creature abandoned by its mother, took it home to his village. The dragon inadvertently drove the farmer and his fellow villagers mad until one day they all and wandered off into the woods, never to be seen again.
Image
Spoiler
Eldritch dragons are mentioned in some of the oldest texts known to man, and until a few hundred years ago, they were though to be a mere myth. Even today, some magi claim that the horrors mentioned in ancient tomes are constructs of the minds of people driven mad by the dragons' presence, and that the massive creatures described never existed. Only magi adept in the uncommon practice of fear magic can hope to care for one, and even they keep their companions far from the Keep and other civilized places. The dragons thrive in caves and forests in the wild, and those tended by magi live in a communal cave deep in the Alasre Mountains. Despite their dark reputation, they are largely harmless because their aura frightens off almost any creature that can run, and they have no natural predators. No one has ever killed one of these dragons or even seen one dead, so some perpetuate the myth that these creatures are the creations of long-dead necromancers or beings from another plane.
Spoiler
The paths to the most distant corners of the world are marked with omens -- old, rotten signs whose words have been worn away save for the occasional "warning," and "beware." If a person is foolish enough to ignore these markers, they will find themself in a dark forest filled with mist, an uneasy dread creeping up their back and slowly turning them mad. Those who have gone no further claim this to be a trick of the environment, and few who have continued returned to say otherwise. Those few who wander on and manage to escape with some semblance of their minds have come back jabbering about monstrous undead dragons and the end of the world.

Allies come from quests (well as far as I remember ive taken a few hiatuses in my day). Holiday events dont seem to be quests? Its normally "here buy this random item (s) and chuck them at other players. I wager it will be either a stream creature or something gained when we huck rotten eggs/candy apples/whathave you at each other.

Oooo Maybe a vampire bat like creature? :D
