Preface
I've noticed a number of new players lately that are lost or confused as to what to do now that they're joined. So, I set out to write an all encompassing guide to Magistream in an attempt to give them some direction. Some of this stuff is already covered in the FAQ and Beginner's Guide, but hopefully there's additional information here that is useful. Without further ado :

I joined Magistream, now what?
Terminology
  • SB = Streamborn or Shopborn. Referring to creatures obtained from the stream or shop directly, and have no parents.
  • QB = Questborn. Creatures obtained as a reward from a quest and have no parents.
  • GB = Giftborn. Originally referred to creatures received as a gift for participating a christmas event long passed. Now more broadly means creatures obtained during a holiday event that have no parents.
  • LTB/WTB = Looking To Buy or Want To Buy. Shorthand often used in thread titles when the user wishes to purchase something.
  • LTS = Looking To Sell. Shorthand used when a user wishes to sell something.
  • LTT = Looking To Trade. Shorthand for a proposed trade. The user likely offers a variety of creatures in exchange for others.
  • RP = Role Play
  • Quicksale = the immediate sale of creatures in stock, as opposed to placing an order in a shop.
  • Bred creature = a creature with one or more generations of parents. It’s generation is usually noted with 1st, 2nd, etc. With 1st gen having one mother and one father, and no grandparents.
  • Hybrid = a creature that looks different than its parents. For example, a Chimera is bred from an ibex and a manticore. This also includes color variations such as gold Farir.
  • Egglocked = describes when the user has reached the maximum number of eggs they can carry at once, and cannot pick up any new ones at the moment.
  • Eggspam = a term used when someone posts clickable creatures outside of the click threads or merchant district. It is spam composed of eggs.

All About Creatures

Post by Doggyears »

How To Get Creatures
Stream
The simplest way to obtain a creature is to visit the stream, accessed via the banner at the top of every page. Here, you will find a selection of nine eggs floating downstream. When an egg reaches the edge of screen it will reappear on the other. If you don’t like any of your current choices you can : take one, causing a new egg to be spawned in its place, or wait until the stream “refreshes” and an entirely new set of eggs is available. This happens every fifteen minutes at X:00, X:15, X:30, and X:45.
Here is a spreadsheet containing stream creature's names, eggs, and rarities. Spoilers!

Shop
Clicking “shop” on the banner above will take you to a list of shops, from which you can by a number of creatures for varying amounts of gold.
To access the Dark shop, you will need to complete the quest "Mysterious Business."
For the Herbalist Shop, you need to finish "The Hidden Path."
To buy things from the Society of the Trident, you need to finish both "Vasial's Crush" and "The Invitation"
In order to access the Artificer Shop you'll need to complete "Still Animals."
(See Quests section in a below post for help with these quests)

Quests
Quests often award creatures on their completion. See the below section on quests for more information about them.

Breeding
If you have two compatible creatures of opposite gender, you can breed them to obtain a new baby creature. Some creatures can only be obtained through breeding. These are called hybrids.

Other Players
You can buy nearly any creature from a fellow magi with gold in the Merchant District. In the Zocalo you can often receive creatures for free! See the section on trading if you need help with this.

Egg limit
You can only care for four live, or unfrozen, eggs at a time. I you want more eggs, you’ll need to hatch one of your current ones first.
There are, however, a few exceptions to this rule. If you already have four eggs, you can still purchase up to two creatures from the donation shop. This raises the limit to six, but only if you purchase the donation pets last.
Additionally, certain holiday events come with “gifting” during which you may receive live eggs from other players. You can open these presents all at once, possibly resulting in you carrying more than four eggs. You’ll have to hatch them down to three or less to obtain new eggs.

How to hatch eggs
Creatures gain progress when they are clicked. Putting your creatures in your signature here, and on other forums, is a good start. Your creatures can be clicked once every twelve hours per IP address.
You can also post your creatures in the three click threads, located in the Reindeer Games section of the forums. Daycare services are available in the Merchant District; someone else will post your creatures for you.
•You can share your creatures on facebook or twitter for an extra boost via the buttons in the upper righthand corner of the creature’s page.
•Additionally, there are off-site nurseries in which you can leave your pets for others to click. Here are a couple : •Yarold’s Click exchange is another form of nursery in which you “trade” your clicks by clicking other’s links in exchange for them clicking your links. See the Yarold’s thread in Community Discussion for more information.

How to get rid of creatures
If you no longer want a creature, you can click “release” next to its name or trade it in the Merchant District. You cannot release a creature you’ve owned for less than six hours. If you want to get an egg out of your way and can’t release it, you can freeze it. This frees up an “eggslot” for you to take another egg.
Alternatively, you can send your frozen eggs or other creatures to Master Belmos, or Nursery Helper, who will unfreeze, unname, and hatch anything you send them to be sold to players someday.

Appearance changing creatures
There are a few creatures that change their appearance based on the time of day. One example is the Abeoth Frog, which rotates from green to red to blue to yellow. Revisit this image in six hours to see for yourself :
Image

Parentless Hybrids
I said before that hybrids can only be obtained by breeding right? Well… you can occasionally find a hybrid with no parents. This can happen a number of ways :
•The site crashed and data was lost. Creatures are restored with no parents. Or the creature’s parents were lost in that crash.
•The creature was transformed via an item, such as the Gryphon Carving, into a hybrid.
•The creature was taken from the stream during a holiday event, and later was allowed to be bred from a different creature.

Dateless Creatures
Normally, you can see the day a creature was born on its information page. Sometimes, however, there will be no birth date listed. This usually happens as a result of a creature being lost in a site-wide crash and restored without its birth date.

Lineages
Or families of creatures. All children of the progenitors carry the family name behind their personal name. Each lineage has its own page where one can view every creature in the lineage, sorted by generation. Additionally, the family page may have a crest, description and list of rules. Here is an example lineage. You can view all families in the Bestiary by choosing “Families” near the top right. (But be warned : ther are 17,000 and counting families listed on a single page)
Before creating your own lineage, you should know that it cannot be undone, the name cannot be changed, and the progenitors will only be able to mate with each other from here on out.
To create a family, attempt to breed your creatures as usual but click the “create a family” button in the top left corner. Next type in your desired family name. Keep in mind it must not be exactly the same as an existing family. If the breeding was successful, you are now the owner and creator of a new family!
Now, if you visit your lineage page, there are a few options available to you by clicking “edit” under the family name. First, you can upload an image to be your family’ crest. You can always upload a different one, or remove it altogether by checking the box labeled “remove” Second, you can enter a description for your family. And lastly, you can set a number of rules by checking the boxes next to them.
•No Egg freezing will prevent people from freezing eggs belonging to your lineage.
•No hatchling freezing is the same, but for hatchlings.
•No releasing will stop people from releasing creatures in your lineage, so they will not be owned by “nobody”
•No breeding with other lineages will stop your family from intermingling with another’s family, potentially resulting in the child taking their name instead of yours.

The Keep

Post by Doggyears »

The Keep is accessed via “Keep” on the menu bar above. Here, you’ll find all of your creatures. This is also where you’ll be able to sort, freeze, name, breed and embed your creatures.

Freezing
Freezing a creature prevents it from progressing to the next stage of growth no matter how many times it’s clicked. It will be forever frozen at that exact percentage.

Naming
You can name a creature by clicking “name” located to the right to the creature image. There is a limit of 25 characters, and only letters, hyphens, apostrophes and spaces are allowed. If you change your mind, any creature can be renamed for a fee that varies based on creature species.

Breeding
To breed you will need two adult creatures of the opposite sex. In you keep, click the “breed” option next to your creature. This will bring up a screen showing all compatible mates for you to choose from. Pick one to attempt a breeding. This will not always be successful, and some creatures are more picky than others; just keep trying!
•Creatures can only breed once every three days--unless you use a breeding cooldown potion. See Items for more information.
•Some Creatures can only be bred a few times before they will be unable to have children. Coal Wyrms, Rockhopper and Ornamental Blue Penguins can have three children. Tinsel Wyrms can have a maximum of two children. And Arkai can only have one child!
•Donation Pets require three shards to breed. This mating will always be successful.
•You can choose to make a family when breeding your creatures. Read the section on lineages before you do!

Embedding creatures
To post your creatures in the click threads or add them to your signature, you’ll need their BBcodes. You can get these by clicking “embed” next to a specific creature or by clicking “embed multiple” at the top of your keep. When embedding multiple creatures, you’ll be taken to a screen similar to the breeding menu. Simply click the creatures you want to embed and then copy the codes from the box below.

Sorting
Once you’ve expanded your collection a bit, you may want to rearrange your creatures in your keep. By default, creatures are sorted in the order they were first released. If you want to change that, click “custom sort” near the top of your keep. You can now drag and drop your creatures into any order you wish.
Additionally, you can divide your creatures into groups by clicking “+” next to “main” in your keep. Next, name your tab whatever you’d like. Now, you have another place to stash your creatures.

Moving
To move your creatures between tabs, click “move creatures” near the top of your keep. This will open up a menu above your creatures in which you can transfer multiple creatures at once. Or, you can move each creature individually by clicking the destination tab name next to the creature.

Currency

Post by Doggyears »

In Magistream there are two types of currency : gold and shards.

Shards
Shards are a thank-you gift for donating to the site. You receive one shard per one US dollar donated. (Donations are the site’s only source of income) You can buy or breed donation pets with shards.

Gold
Gold is earned via playing the game, and is what most creatures will cost you to buy. There are several ways to earn gold :
•Clicking on live creatures. You earn one gold per live creature clicked. The Alicanto heart increases gold earned from eggs to 5 per egg--get it from the Artificer's Association as soon as you can! Clicking creatures en masse with the intent to make gold is called goldmining.
•Posting in the forums. Depending on the length and frequency of your posts, you can earn up to 200 gold a post.
•Selling creatures or services to other players.

You can spend your gold in the shops tab, throw gold at the Koi Pond or buy creatures from other players in the Merchant district.

What should I sell?
Stream creatures
When you're just starting out, creatures from the stream are easy to get an sell. They usually go for 500-1,000 gold a piece. Occasionally a new creature will be released into the stream, flooding it for a few days. This is a great time to grab some and sell them for several thousand gold each. You can catch some for yourself once the price goes down.

Hybrids
When your browsing the stream, keep an eye out for creatures that can breed hybrids. They are generally worth 1,000 gold or more. Below is a list of hybrids that can be bred solely from stream creatures, with a link to their bestiary page so you can see how to breed them.
Spoiler
Art
If you are artistically inclined, you can sell your services in the Hall of Arts Seller's Gallery for gold or creatures. Digital art, pixel art, avatar, signature sets, and profile css are all options.

Goldmining 101
TheNewBlack wrote:This is a bit complicated, but believe me, it's so worth it. You'll be making like 100k a day.

1. First, download Opera 12. This is the best browser for goldmining because it's fast. Other browsers will not be able keep up with all the tabs you open. And the biggest gold mines do not even work without Opera. This is the old version of Opera because the next thing you need to download does not work on newer versions.
Download here: http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml ... 11&local=y

2. Second, download Snap-Links for Opera. This will allow you to click lots of creatures at once.
Download here: https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/ ... nap-links/

3. Check to make sure you have Java on your computer: https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If you get a congratulations message, you already have it. If not, download it here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

4. Now you need to make file types visible on your computer.

This may be different depending on the type of computer you have, so if you are having difficulty, let me know. You should be able to google how to do this depending on your computer type.

On my computer, I open File explorer, click the View tab, and check File name extensions.

On another tutorial I found these instructions: Open File explorer and choose Tools >> Folder Options. Scroll down till you find “Hide extensions for known file types” and uncheck it.

5. Create a new folder on your PC, name it "Goldmining". You can put this folder anywhere you like, just remember where it is.

6. Now create two text files in the Goldmining folder using Notepad. To do this, open the folder, right click on the background, click New, and press Text Document. Name them snap-links and CloseIT.

7. Copy the code below and paste it into the file you named snap-links. Then save and exit.

Code: Select all

javascript:({
	init: function() {
		this.box = document.createElement("div");
		this.box.id = "snap-links-box";
		this.bs = this.box.style;
		this.bs.backgroundColor = "rgba(0,128,255,.1)";
		this.bs.border = "1px solid rgb(255,255,0)";
		this.bs.WebkitBoxSizing =
		this.bs.OBoxSizing =
		this.bs.MozBoxSizing =
		this.bs.boxSizing = 'border-box';
		this.bs.position = "absolute";
		this.bs.zIndex = "2147483647";
		this.cursor = document.body.style.cursor;
		document.body.style.setProperty("cursor", "crosshair", "important");
		addEventListener("mousedown", this, true);
	},
	uninit: function() {
		var self = this;
		removeEventListener("mousemove", this, true);
		removeEventListener("mouseup", this, true);
		setTimeout(function(){
			removeEventListener("click", self, true);
		}, 10);

		this.box.parentNode.removeChild(this.box);
		this.box = null;
		if (this.cursor) {
			document.body.style.cursor = this.cursor;
		} else {
			document.body.style.removeProperty("cursor");
		}
	},
	handleEvent : function(event){
		if (event.button) return false;
		event.preventDefault();
		event.stopPropagation();
		switch(event.type){
			case "mousedown":
				this.downX = event.pageX;

}).init();
8. Now copy and paste the code below into your CloseIT file. Save and close.

Code: Select all

// ==UserScript==
// @name           CloseIt
// @namespace      Magistream
// @include        http://magistream.com/creature/*
// ==/UserScript==

window.close();
9. Now go to your Goldmining file and rename your text files. Right click on it, select rename. Change the .txt part of the file names to .js and ignore the warning messages. This changes these files from ordinary text files into scripts, and don't worry, it won't harm your computer.

10. Start up Opera 12. Click the Opera button in the corner of the screen, select Settings, then Preferences. Here you will make several changes to the settings which I will list below.

A. Change the Pop-up settings to Open all Pop-ups.

B. Then click the Advanced tab and go to Cookies. Check Delete new cookies when exiting Opera.

C. Then go to History, check Empty on exit, this should help keep it from lagging.

D. Then click Security, and click the menu by Auto-update. Choose Do not check for updates. Otherwise, it will automatically update Opera and goldmining will stop working.

E. Then click Content, and make sure Enable JavaScript and Enable plug-ins are checked.

F. Then click JavaScript Options, and at the bottom click Choose, then find and select your Goldmining folder.

G. Click OK. Close the browser and start it again.

11. You're ready to go goldmining! The best places to goldmine are these three websites:

Magi-ifn.net

PetHatchery.co.uk

imagefreegoldmine.wikidot.com

The first 2 are egg hatcheries and therefore will yield more gold per click, so start with those first, finish mining them, and then go to the image free gold mine. But before we start, let's make sure you're set up with an Alicanto Heart.

12. If you don't already have one, you will need an Alicanto Heart on Magistream to make sure you're getting the maximum amount of gold per click. An Alicanto Heart will enable you to receive 5 gold for clicking on an egg instead of only 1 gold. This means you'll be making 5X as much gold goldmining.

If you don't have one already, you're going to need access to the Artificer's Shop. To do that you'll need to complete a quest. This walkthrough will take you step-by-step through how to do it:
http://magistream.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:_Artificer

13. After you have finished the quest, go to Shops on Magistream, then click Artificer's Shop. Buy the Alicanto Heart.

14. Ok, now you're ready to go goldmining. Open up Opera 12, go to magistream.com and log in.

Then go to Magi-ifn.net and click on the background of the page, then use the scrollbar on the right to scroll down a little, then click and drag to the left of the dots. An outlined box should appear, drag this over all the dots to select them, then let go. It can be a little tricky so keep clicking around and trying until it works. This should open all the links selected in new tabs, and automatically close them as they load.

15. Ok, now you can open another browser and play Magistream on that while you're earning gold. You should see your gold going up each time you refresh. If you don't, double check that you are logged in on Opera and that everything is working.

16. After all the tabs have closed, then go to pethatchery.co.uk and repeat the process. Mine all the pages and then advance to imagefreegoldmine.wikidot.com. Select a mine and select the entire page of dots (unless your computer freezes up, then select whatever your computer can handle).

17. This will give you about 3k-3500 gold per page. You can just keep it running in the background all day as you go about your business. It takes roughly 40 minutes on my computer to goldmine one page, so set a timer for 40 minutes, and then when it buzzes, go back to Opera and go goldmine the next page. Repeat the process.

18. If you find Opera beginning to slow down, get laggy, or refuse to open, you'll need to download this program:
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

This will keep it running fast. Just run it once a day after you're done goldmining, or whenever you are having problems.

OK, that's it! Happy goldmining!
Additionally, you can try an updated version of Opera per SwnyTddObsd's guide.

The first page of your inventory lists usable items you own. These items may transform one creature into a different one, change it's gender or allow it to breed again quickly. Below is a list of items, where to get them, and what they do.

Ashen Feather. Obtained occasionally when breeding Phoenixes. Used in the Quest Elder Phoenixes to transform a Phoenix into an Elder Phoenix.
Tokens
In your Inventory, there's a tab for "tokens." These are mementos of your adventures or items you've bought in the past. They don't do anything special; they're just a collection you can look back on.

Drinks
Drink are fun little items you can buy from Remy's Inn and sometimes from seasonal shops. It is consumed as soon as you buy it producing a visual effect on your screen. (And makesh you ...hic... ttalk like dish. Remy's Special Brew will sober you up and remove this effect.) Rarely you can find a creature when you take a drink!
You can find a list of all the drinks you've consumed, and how many of them, in your inventory under the "drinks" tab.

Achievements
The obligatory achievements you can earn are found in your inventory under the last tab "Achievements." Next to each one is the requirement to unlock it, as well as the date on which you unlocked it.

Badges
Badges are icons that appear on your profile. They commemorate past events and basically say, "I was there." You can hover your mouse over each badge on a profile to find out what it celebrates.

Your Profile

Post by Doggyears »

You can view your own profile by clicking "view your profile" on the menu bar. To see another player's profile, click their name or avatar on a forum post.

Avatar
Not the master of all four elements, but your face on Magistream. This picture represents you to your fellow Magi. You can change it by clicking User Control Panel > Profile > Edit avatar. There you can upload an image of your choosing. Keep in mind it needs to be no bigger than 160 by 140 pixels and 51.2 Kilobytes.
You can visit the Hall of Arts and commission someone to make you an avatar if you'd like! Some users even have a selection of free avatars to choose from.

Signature
Your signature is a small section of text and/or images that appears beneath your posts on the forum. You can edit it by going to User Control Panel > Profile > Edit signature. Your signature can only contain 15 links total. Any images that are too big will be cut off. You can check your changes by clicking "preview" while editing. This shows how your signature will look in private messages. Keep in mind it will be wider on forum posts.

About Me
This is a section on your profile where you can put anything you like. Get to it by clicking User Control Panel > Profile > Edit about me. Tell us about yourself or display or favorite things. The sky's the limit!

Profile
Under User Control Panel > Profile > Edit profile, you can change how your profile looks. You will need knowledge of CSS, which I will cover later. In the meantime you can visit w3schools to learn it yourself, or go the the Hall of Arts and have someone make you a custom profile.

Forums

Post by Doggyears »

I you found this guide then you already have an idea of what the forums are. On the forums you make posts to communicate with other people also playing this game. Just a few of the things you can do here are :
  • Chat with your fellow Magi
    Play word games
    Read/write stories
    Roleplay
    Make/sell/appreciate art
    Buy and sell creatures
The next section of this thread will go over how to use BBCode, the language that formats forum posts.

BBCode

Post by Doggyears »

How to post images
To embed an image in your post, you will first need to host that image online. Below are two walk throughs for a couple of the image hosting sites that I use. If your image is already online (ex. you posted it to your deviant art, or found it online) then you simply need to right click the image and copy the image address. Then, in your Magistream post, click the tiny photo symbol ( Image ) to insert the necessary bbcode. Paste your image link inside of the img tags, like so :

Code: Select all

[img]https://orig00.deviantart.net/39d4/f/2018/081/e/6/koiexample_by_2doggyears-dc6moqm.png[/img]
  • Imgur
    First sign up for an account on imgur.com. Once you're logged in, click new post near the top left corner. Drag and drop the image from your computer to upload it. Now right-click your image and select copy image address. In your Magistream post, click the tiny photo symbol ( Image ) to insert the necessary bbcode. Paste your image link inside of the img tags, like so :

    Code: Select all

    [img]https://i.imgur.com/0z5HABV.png[/img]
    On imgur, you can find all of your previously uploaded images in one place by clicking your name in the top right hand corner and selecting images.

    image.frl
    Go to the image.frl homepage. Click upload image and select the file from your computer. Now, copy the direct link provided. In your Magistream post, click the tiny photo symbol ( Image ) to insert the necessary bbcode. Paste your image link inside of the img tags, like so :

    Code: Select all

    [img]https://image.frl/i/o971opepk5eb6vvi.png[/img]
    Unlike Imgur, you do not need an account to upload images however, you also do not have an area that contains all of your uploaded images. So it is important that you do not lose your image links if you are using image.frl.
What does this button do?
Most of the BBcode you'll need can be inserted into your post using the buttons at the top of the text box. In this section we'll go over what each of them does.
Image
B for bold, it makes your text look like this. To bold your text, click on the B button and type within the b tags.

Code: Select all

[b]Your text here![/b]
Result : Your text here!

Image
I for italics, using it will make your text look like this. Click the I button and type within the i tags.

Code: Select all

[i]Your text here.[/i]
Result : Your text here.

Image
U stands for underline, making your text look like this. Click the U button and type inside the u tags.

Code: Select all

[u]Your text here.[/u]
Result : Your text here.

Image
Left align text. This button won't do appear to do anything unless it is placed inside one of the two following tags. Because, the text on Magistream is left aligned by default.

Code: Select all

[left]Your text here.[/left]
Result : Your text here.
Image
Center align text. This button aligns your text to the center of your post. Type inside the center tags to center your text.

Code: Select all

[center]Your text here.[/center]
Result : Your text here.
Image
Right align text. Use this button to align your text to the right side of your post by typing within the right tags.

Code: Select all

[right]Your text here.[/right]
Result : Your text here. Image
This button is the quotes button. Use it to place someone else's words inside a quote box. You can also click the quote button in the top right hand corner of their post to bring up a comment with their post already quoted for you.

Image
The code button is what I've been using so far to display code to you without it formatting my post. That way you can see what I'm doing with BBCode. BBCode placed within code tags will not activate.

Image
This list button is used to indent your text to create a list of something. Press enter after each new item on your list.

Code: Select all

[list]One fish
Two Fish
Red Fish
Blue Fish[/list]
Result :
  • One fish
    Two Fish
    Red Fish
    Blue Fish
Image
The bullet button is used along side the list button to create a bullet-ed list of items. It creates a dot next to your text.

Code: Select all

[list][*]Your text here.[/list]
Result :
  • Your text here.
Image
The image button is used to embed images into your post. See the above section for instructions on how to use these tags.

Image
The YouTube button allows you to embed videos in your post. Copy the url of the video you want to share and paste it within the youtube tags.

Code: Select all

[youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ywx6S4GJMU[/youtube]
Result :

Image
Use the music button to embed mp3 files into your post. Like images, your music file will need to be hosted on the internet first. Finding a place to do so can prove difficult, so usually the youtube tag is used instead.

Image
The link button embeds a url into your post so that it may be clicked. Simply place your url between the url tags to create a link.

Code: Select all

[url]https://imgur.com/0z5HABV[/url]
Result : https://imgur.com/0z5HABV
In order to make text link to something you must alter the url tags like so :

Code: Select all

[url=https://imgur.com/0z5HABV]Your text here.[/url]
Result : Your text here.

Image
The spoiler button places your text beneath a spoiler pop down. Use it to prevent someone from accidentally reading a spoiler or to save space.

Code: Select all

[spoiler]Your text here.[/spoiler]
Result :
Spoiler
Your text here.
The "normal" pop down menu will change the size of text placed within the size tags.

Code: Select all

[size=50]This is tiny text.[/size]
[size=85]This is small text.[/size]
[size=150]This is large text.[/size]
[size=200]This is huge text.[/size]
Result : This is tiny text.
This is small text.
This is large text.
This is huge text.

Image
The color wheel button allows you to change the color of your text by typing within the color tags. You can click on one of the colored squares to choose that color or type in any hex code of your choosing.

Code: Select all

[color=#FF0000]This is red text.[/color]
Result : This is red text.
