Re: A New Potion!

What about an insulating potion? Something to protect magi and creatures from extreme heat or cold. That would have been useful in the Iceist quest XD Or one that let's you breath under water

Since you asked for suggestions for similar contests I've been thinking and I have a couple ideas. Create a drink that Remy might sell although with its visual effects. And design a new spell for magi to cast.

Decided to post my entry publicly

Creatures: Xand Bears and Rose Imps
Ingredients: Mandrake Leaves and Rose Dew
Spoiler
NOTE: it is not advised mix the colored dew of Rose Imps

This seemingly simple set of brews must be very carefully tended and prepared lest it become too potent and the taker is strongly warned to only use the smallest dose possible and very rarely. Overdoses may cause some disturbing side effects, the worst of which may be a mental breakdown and the inability to comprehend reality.

Red Tea:

4 Dried Mandrake Leaves
1 Gallon Dew from a Red Rose Imp

Bring the Dew to a gentle heat for 1 hour.
Crush the Mandrake leaves to a fine powder in your mortar and pestle.
Add the powder to the dew and boil for no longer than 15 minutes.

This mixture must then sit undisturbed in a closed clay jar for exactly one week. Any longer and it will be far too potent. Empty the brew into a new jar and add an equal amount of clear water warmed by the sun. One ounce can then be taken stirred into a cup of tea at any time.

Archivists and Librarians are most often the ones who take their tea “red” as it allows them to see erased and otherwise damaged text on mistreated scrolls and books, allowing them to either restore the text, if salvageable, or copy it to a new book.

Taking too strong a tea or when used too long, can produce lingering “text eye” where the imbiber random, jumbled words that have no meaning superimposed over everything they see. Severe overdoses can cause heart attack.

Dew Drops:

4 Dried Mandrake Leaves
1 Gallon Dew from a Pink Rose Imp

Bring the Dew to a gentle heat for 1 hour.
Crush the Mandrake leaves to a fine powder in your mortar and pestle.
Add the powder to the dew and boil for no longer than 15 minutes.

One drop taken on the tongue is said to allow the user to see who their soul mate is, to tell if their friendship is true. Several ballads tell of adventuring parties who take the Pink Dew as a bond-forming experience, weeding out those unfaithful friends.

Pink Dew should only be taken once a year, if ever. Friendships can be destroyed even if true as Pink Dew is known to cause high blood pressure and paranoia.

Yellow Coffee

8 Dried Mandrake Leaves
1 Gallon Dew from a Yellow Rose Imp

Bring the Dew to a gentle heat for 1 hour.
Steep the leaves whole for no longer than 5 minutes

This stimulant is known to encourage creativity and a feeling of contentment if not happiness. A favorite of artists who say it unlocks creativity and of students crunching for a big test. Or to just find a feeling of peace after a long stressful day. However it's effects can be very fleeting, and intense.

Overstimulate of the mind leads to hypertension and may cause one to feel felt out or overlooked, “monsters under the bed” or various “unspeakables” peeking into your windows. One famous individual who is said by popular rumor to have overdosed and it's effects became permanent is the writer HP Lovecraft.

White Water:

10 Dried Mandrake Leaves
10 Gallon Dew from a White Rose Imp gathered on nights of the new moon.
– may be gathered over many new moon nights as long as the jar does not see any other light

Bring the Dew to a gentle heat for 1 hour.
Steep the leaves whole for the entire night

This mixture must then sit undisturbed in a closed clay jar for until the night of the next full moon. Any longer and it will be far too potent. Empty the brew into a new jar and add an equal amount of clear, cool water touched by the light of the full moon. You should have 20 gallons of a white colored water. The completed brew can then be touched by sunlight without too much spoilage.

A favored drink of those about to close the “big deal”, be it business or politics, though all parties at the meeting must be made aware that it's in use or it's non-disclosure is seen as very underhanded. White Water is said to encourage honesty and charity during the negotiations thus ensuring a fair deal for all parties involved.

Those who drink it regularly have suffered a “wasting” effects on their body. A lack of health, paleness, thinness and elongation of the fingers and toes.

Hello everyone! Today is the last day to enter my contest, so if you have not yet sent me a message you still have a few hours left.

I have also made a decision regarding the next area of study I feel should be expanded upon. I am happy to say that I am making plans for my next contest and will announce it next week. I hope you have enjoyed this round and are looking forward to the next.

Re: A New Potion! Winners Announced!

Hello again everyone! I see I am breaking a rule; perhaps Morgaln will be kind enough to overlook it this time as I have chosen two winners from the potion entries I received.

One of the winning potions was created by Birds, the other by Kestrad. Congratulations to both of you for such creating such interesting and well thought out potions!

Here is Birds's extry.
Spoiler
Nautica.
The purpose of this potion is to be granted the ability to swim very deep underwater without worrying about the effects of temperature and pressure on your person. This potion has a time limit of 4.5 hours, so please leave yourself enough time to swim back to the surface. The potion does not effect your belongings so please pack smart for your adventure into the deep.

Ingredients:
• one 5 centimeter or 2 inch gem from a mature Dugong
• three teeth from a mature Ebbene Shark
• heat produced from a Trench Seahorse
• Pink Fan Coral located in Candle Archipelagos
• marble or stone mortar and pestle
• cauldron forged from a phoenix flame or a cauldron of equal durability
• Forever Liquid potion bottle

Procedure:
1. Ground up the 3 Ebbene Shark teeth, some force is required, in a small sized mortar. For best results use a marble or stone mortar and pestle set as to not break the bowl while grounding up the teeth. After ground into a fine powder, empty into a separate bowl.
2. Clean the mortar and pestle.
3. Chisel off and ground up 1 gram of Pink Fan Coral in the mortar. Must be ground into a fine powder, just like the Ebbene Shark teeth. After you are done, empty the powder into the same bowl as the Ebbene teeth.
4. Place the Dugong gem into a small sized cauldron crafted in phoenix flame or any cauldron with equal durability . This is a must since the cauldron has to not melt whilst you are preparing the potion, as you will be using the heat from a Trench Seahorse.
5. Pour the powder mixture into the cauldron. The powder should be covering at least half of the gem.
6. With this step you will need the help of a Trench Seahorse. They will need to use their heat to melt down the contents of the cauldron. Please be advised that it can get tremendously hot during this process. Take extreme precaution.
7. Allow the Trench Seahorse to heat the cauldron for exactly 2 minutes. It can not be less, otherwise the Dugong gem will not completely melt and the binding of the powder mixture to the gem won't happen. If you go over 2 minutes, you have the risk of burning through the bonding process between the powder mixture and the gem.
8. Hopefully all went well and in your cauldron there is a very pale but shimmery light green liquid. If your potion is not this color, something went wrong and you need to restart the process from the beginning. The cauldron should cool in about 3 minutes, from there you have a window of about 80 seconds to transfer the cooled liquid into a Forever Liquid potion bottle. This bottle is a necessity since after about 5 minutes the potion starts to cool into a solid.
9. After you have successfully transferred the potion into the Forever Liquid bottle, you can use the potion right away or you can keep it away safely for 2 months at room temperature.

To activate the potion just ingest it on a full stomach. Otherwise you will have a headache until the effects of the potion are done.

Warnings:
• If you get any part of the procedure wrong the potion will not work.
• This potion can not be ingested more than once in a three day period. If that does happen you will see these following symptoms: acute nausea following the immediate ingesting of the second dose, a sickly pallor by the end of the day. By the third day, if untreated, your magic will drain you very quickly where you will have to be bed-ridden for half a day just for using your magic for 30 minutes.
Please go see a capable magi as soon as the symptoms begin. If left untreated a magi can suffer for the rest of their life from rapid magic depletion.
And here is Kestrad's entry.
Spoiler
While the crystals on a Verikan's back are without a doubt the most useful, reliable scrying surface, when a Verikan is not available or simply refuses to cooperate, this potion can serve as an adequate substitute. A few drops placed in a drink will induce sleep, allowing a magi to dream of the events happening around a person or group of people they think of as they are falling asleep. The more drops used, the longer the effect. This potion only allows scrying of present events. While the user of this potion may be roused in the middle of dreaming, this sometimes results in vivid hallucinations. Using more than six drops of the potion is not recommended, as too much may cause the magi to stay asleep for months or even years. Rousing them from such a slumber is ill-advised, as they will be unable to see normally, continuing to see only the events relating to the people specified until the potion's duration has played out.

Ingredients:
1 medium Verikan crystal (provides scrying magic base)
peel from 3 lemons (enhances clarity)
petals from 1 Caliginous Pool lily (strengthens magic, enhances dreams)
1 flask Arkenian glacier water (induces visions)
1 Daydreamer Amphithere feather (enhances dreams, induces sleep)
a pinch of Silsia Phoenix down (soothes, induces sleep)

Instructions:
Boil the Verikan crystal in the Arkenian glacier water. Remove the crystal (which should be unaffected by this process and still good for use in other spells) and let the water cool. It should turn pale blue as it cools.

While the water is cooling, take the lemon peels and mash, squeeze, or otherwise press them until liquid comes out. Throw out the spent peels; use a spell of your choice to siphon the oil out of the liquid. Reserve the oil and throw out the rest.

Bruise the petals of the Caliginous Pool lily and pour half of the glacier water over it. Boil the water with petals in a simple distillation apparatus, making sure to only collect the first phase. The remaining petal water can be saved, as it makes a good base for many potions that enhance the bond between magi and creature, and Caliginous Pool lilies are a very rare ingredient. Put the Silsia Phoenix down in the distilled liquid to steep, and allow the liquid to cool.

Mix the remaining half of the glacier water with the lemon oil and stir vigorously with the Amphithere feather. The mixture should start to glow. Strain the phoenix down out of the distilled liquid and then slowly pour it into the glacier water lemon oil mixture. Stir a few more times with the Amphithere feather. The final product will no longer glow and should be clear, with a faint purple tint.

This potion is not sensitive to light. It should be stored in a cool location, as prolonged exposure to heat will cause it to degrade. If the potion has started to degrade, dreams will be fragmented and sleep fitful; the potion should be thrown out at that point.

I will be announcing a new contest topic on Monday!
