Re: September Donis
Looks more like a marlin I think:
Spoiler
Swordfish:
Sailfish:
Marlin:
Marlin tend to have a smaller head and eyes, long thin pelvic fins, a shorter bill,
a short but elongate dorsal fin, and a thin caudal fish compared to swordfish. They're also often striped. Either way, though, I love me some billfishes.
Coincidentally, Istiophoridae is the family that marlins and sailfishes belong to, and Kajikia is a specific genus of marlins. I'm not sure where the Paxir part might come from, but another genus is Istiompax.

Re: September Donis
According to a quick translation, swordfish is actually 'Mekajiki'Real wrote:To add to that, if you want to be a little more specific, at least on the kajiki's side, it means 'swordfish' in Japanese, if I'm not wrong.NyxNoire wrote:Or, you know, they do a lot of research to find names that actually fit the creature.Namyre wrote:All of the recent donis have names like their creator sneezed while typing and they look at the word like, "Yeah, that's okay. I like that."
A simple googling of the name gives you a typhoon that was named Kajiki -
https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuf%C3%A3 ... %282007%29
English:Istiora gives me this - https://uz.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istiora - I do not know the language so I click the English version, and get this - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor - it means Metaphor!Spoiler
Typhoon Kajiki
Typhoon (JMA)
Category 4 super typhoon (SSHWS)
Kajiki Oct 20 2007 0530Z.png Kajiki 2007 track.png
Duration October 19 – October 22
Peak intensity 165 km/h (105 mph) (10-min) 940 hPa (mbar)
An area of disturbed weather formed in the open ocean early on October 17, and tracked north-east. The JMA and the JTWC declared this area a tropical depression very early on October 19.[168] Six hours later, it was upgraded to Tropical Storm Kajiki.[169] Rapid intensification continued; another six hours later, it was upgraded to a severe tropical storm.[170][171] Kajiki became a typhoon early on October 20 as it rapidly intensified.[172] The storm reached peak intensity as it hit Iwo Jima and then gradually began weakening. The storm dropped upwards of 233 mm (9.1 in) of rain on the island.[173] The airport on Iwo Jima reported winds gusts up to 140 km/h (85 mph).[174]
Ahha.. so a metaphor for a typhoon. *reads critter's description* Yeup, that fits.
While kajiki, as PK pointed out, is a type of Marlin. Or, it looks to be the name for Blue Marlin(that's what comes up when I google it).
I have no idea about 'Paxir' though(google seems to think I meant pixar or want a bunch of non-english results)

If you really want to know where the names came from, go look at the Wiki page for Billfish.
If you see me posting nonsense, give me a smack and tell me to go write.

Cool! You were using part of the scientific names for various marlin species, right?Sochitelya wrote:If you really want to know where the names came from, go look at the Wiki page for Billfish.

They are really stunning!

It would be really cool if there were non electrical Marlins released to the Artificer shop or so.
Spoiler
Despite its large size, an adult istiora is a gleaming, graceful creature, capable of leaping high above the waves and arrowing swiftly below them. They often travel great distances across all the oceans of the world, though they prefer to keep to deeper waters where they can easily hunt. Their large bills and their ability to create shockwaves easily enable them to slash through a school of fish, protect themselves from predators, or make their displeasure at being approached known. The ability to create a shockwave comes from the lightning that flashes around their bills but magi aren't entirely sure how they create it, or how they control its force. Much more research is needed to determine why paxir break apart ice floes when they reach northern waters, but a few magi simply think they do this because it entertains them to make a loud noise and destroy the floe.
Paxir istiora can be found in oceans all over the world, including the icy waters of the north, though they seem to prefer more temperate zones. Istiora are large, heavy creatures that can not only outgrow many boats, but also outswim them. For this reason - and because the oceans are so large - few magi have been able to study them extensively, and those that do encounter them on the open sea are often driven away by their ability to create a shockwave. Eggs are also well-hidden, but a handful of istiora have been raised by researchers, at least until they outgrow their pools and have to be released. Paxir istiora have been known to break apart ice floes with their shockwave ability, when they travel north; in warmer waters, they will occasionally break small fishing boats in order to steal the day's catch.

Spoiler
Istiora hatchlings are curious but not particularly bright, though some researchers think this might just be because they're near-sighted. Either way, a magi raising an istiora should always keep in mind both their long sharp bill and, once they're older, their ability to stun with a single poke or slash. Kajiki istiora hatchlings are attracted to light, especially if it's bright and flashing; an attraction that magi can take advantage of to keep them still for at least a few moments. Unlike paxir, kajiki hatchlings are generally ambivalent about companions, but only so long as those companions are larger or at least more dangerous than them.

Their large bills and their ability to stun easily enable them to slash through a school of fish, or protect themselves from predators, though most kajiki avoid battles with anything that could eat them. The ability to stun comes from the lightning that flashes around their bills but magi aren't entirely sure how they create it, or how they control its force. While it was once thought that kajiki just stunned indiscriminately, researchers have recently found that they can generate a deadlier force for larger prey or when threatened. Whether this power can be harnessed by magi remains to be seen; though istiora are becoming a slightly more common sight, much more research is needed.

Kajiki istiora are most often spotted during thunderstorms and hurricanes, when they leap out of the water to - according to local fishermen - recharge their stun abilities.

Either way, a magi raising an istiora should always keep in mind both their long sharp bill and, once they're older, their ability to create a shockwave with a single poke or slash. Paxir istiora hatchlings seem to enjoy cool and windy days, and will often play in the waves created by the wind, leaping in and out of the water. However, they also seem to prefer to play alone and while not aggressively territorial, they definitely display unhappiness when confined in a small space with too many other creatures, even other istiora. As they grow, this will usually turn into hunting the other creatures, with an especial fondness for kraken hatchlings, ice octopuses, and smaller ice krakens.
