At one restaurant over here they serve a dish as part of their "sushi buffet" that's rice wrapped in seaweed and in the middle there's a piece of sausage and some cucumber.Myrin wrote:That.... okay, I'm not sure how that'd go. Re: 794-Moray Eel
I Love Sashimi! Not the salmon though... Some reason I think the taste of raw salmon's kind of musty. But Ahi tuna sashimi.... YUM!
[chuckles about the rest of the discussion] Not out of offense but because I've had that chat with various people as well. When I first started eating sushi (the general sort of way) I got mixed up as well. But I always made a point of asking about it with the people prepping it to try getting it right. I'm still not 100% on remembering what I've learned. My apologies on this. Some times it takes a while for things to stick.
But yes, not All sushi is raw meat/fish. In fact, one of my favorite versions (for lack of knowledge of the proper term) is called a California Roll... "Fake" crab (usually cooked white fish with a Hint of crab flavor), avocado, cucumber rolled into sushi rice and wrapped with nori and some times sprinkled with sesame seeds. Another one is called the Philadelphia Roll. It has cucumber, cream cheese and avocado rolled in the rice and nori wrap.
Or there's even a Veggie Roll that has carrots, cucumbers, avocado rolled in the rice and nori wrap. All are great with a touch of Gari (pickled ginger) and wasabi (a ground Japanese horseradish paste).
(And yes, I know, it's very gauche of me to put the gari and wasabi directly on the rolls. I know it's frowned upon by "real" sushi enthusiasts and authentic peeps. I just happen to like it that way.)
P.S. I was told by several people (not just enthusiasts but a couple people in the medical profession as well) that high grade tuna (esp. raw tuna) was good for people with depression. The nutrients and chemicals in deep water sea fish help the body/brain process things better. And for some of us with that affliction, every little things helps.
So, yes, it's a popular food with the trendy peeps and gross to others but it's also something beneficial... Regardless.
Rule of thumb... Most things Are better the closer you get them to their original state with the least amount of processing possible.

A Hawaiian favorite is made with Spam. Though it's not actually sushi, since the rice isn't seasoned right. But yeah, block of rice, a little teriyaki sauce, a slice of Spam, and wrap it in nori. The sausage might be an improvement...Rosehill wrote:At one restaurant over here they serve a dish as part of their "sushi buffet" that's rice wrapped in seaweed and in the middle there's a piece of sausage and some cucumber.
I once saw a picture of what appeared to be a hot dog with bun wrapped in nori and cut into sushi-like rounds, but I have no idea if that was an actual thing or just a practical joke.

I managed to catch a few below 1%. 2 on the very first day (release day). For some reason, I didn't have a problem with them.
