New Quest Boreus: The Star in the Sky

Post by Padfootsmistress777 »

I didn't see a post about the new quest where it can be discussed so...boop (Hope this is ok? Yes? No? I thought it would be nice?)

Part 1: Boreus: The Star in the Sky
NOTE! If you did not start this one before January 18th, you cannot continue to the later steps!
The quest can be found in the Stream

It takes unfrozen, unnamed, streamborn Xand Bear eggs. Only from the main tab, nowhere else.

Initial Text:
Spoiler
"So did you see it?"

"My cousin in Synara said it was bright as the sun there!"

"I heard it might be a bad omen?"

Similar conversations are happening all over the Keep, magi and students and staff and guests all discussing the bright meteor that streaked across the northern sky yesterday. Did it burn up or hit the ground, will there be an expedition to find it, was it some supernatural sign? You've taken part in several such conversations, but right now you're more interested in checking the Stream. After all, an expedition will take time to plan, if there is one, so you'll have ample chance to join in. But if you're really, really lucky, there might be a late arkai egg to be found right now.

As you draw closer to the Stream, the conversation tones are less excited and more confused. A lot of people are just staring at the water, and when you dodge around the small crowd you see why: the stream is flooded with xand bear eggs. It's not an unknown phenomemon - eggs new to the stream typically appear en mass at first, and you could set a clock by the regular appearance of platypus eggs. But xand bears are not new, and their appearance this way is baffling.

"Hey, look at this." A younger student holds up an egg drawn fresh from the stream, and people crowd around to see. Rather than fight through for a glimpse, you try catching an egg yourself; if whatever's odd about that egg is also why the xand bears are flooding, the rest of them might also be strange. You find dark streaks on the egg, almost like scorch marks, and the shell has striations that might be hairline cracks. Other students catch some as well, and it doesn't take long to realize that all the eggs show the same evidence of something wrong.

You notice something else unusual. "There's a lot of globefish in the water too." While there's always a few of them among the water plants or in pockets of still water, the placid fish usually avoid the swifter currents. But now what looks like the whole school of them are darting about, sunlight flashing from their golden fins. One quick thinking water-mage draws a sphere of water out of the Stream with a globefish inside, and the intact bubble shows a snow-streaked landscape partially obscured by smoke. As with the eggs, more people draw the fish out, and their bodies show similar scenes.

"I think we need to report this to someone."

Since Master Belmos runs the Nursery, he's the obvious choice to bring the eggs to. He's clearly disturbed by the condition of the egg you bring, and when you explain what's happening he orders his helpers to prepare nest boxes, extra down. "This doesn't bode well. I think the globefish will have to keep their mystery a little longer though; these eggs need immediate attention. Bring me as many as you can catch, and let others know to do the same. If we're quick and careful, I think we can save them."
Text when you have no eggs:
Spoiler
Master Belmos gives you a stern look as you return to the Nursery empty-handed.

"Quickly now, we need to save as many Xand Bears as we can, so go get some from the Stream. We suspect that there may not be many days before the Xand Bears are gone."
Text when you have an egg (or more):
Spoiler
Master Belmos carefully inspects your latest contribution, then places it gently in a nest lined with osath feathers. A phoenix, one of several perched around the hatchery to heat it, inspects the new addition curiously before tucking it closer to the ones already in the nest.

"So far, so good. The eggs seem to be doing well; the cubs that have hatched so far are all healthy. If we can find where they came from, we might even be able to return many of them to the wild when they're older."

"Go now and rescue all you can. We suspect that there may not be many days before the Xand Bears are gone."
Text When you have an egg (New):

"So far, so good. The eggs seem to be doing well; the cubs that have hatched so far are all healthy. All in all we've saved *insert number here* Xand Bears so far. If we can find where they came from, we might even be able to return many of them to the wild when they're older."

"Go now and rescue all you can. We suspect that there may not be many days before the Xand Bears are gone. Our helpers further up the Stream forecast we have (two days/less than two days/less than one day) left."
NOTE! To be able to do parts 2-5 you needed to have started part one before January 18th 2017.

Ice Kitsunes

Nine sleek tails frame this egg.

Hatchling Description
Spoiler
Young ice kitsunes are used as messengers, scrying through ice crystals and delivering short missives via frost patterns. They thrive on the constant challenges and intellectual stimulation, and even their play is a form of practice. These creatures are intense investments, for a Magi who would bond with one must not only constantly engage with their charge, but must also provide for their magical growth. The hatchlings sleep in small igloos, and require a highly magical environment to thrive. If either of these needs are not met, an adult ice kitsune will use its powers to whisk away the hatchling in a flurry of snow, leaving behind only an icy paw print.
Image
Adult Description
Spoiler
Adult ice kitsunes are only limited in their power by the talent and skill of their magi. To truly utilize them fully, a magi must also have honed their own skills, and to do spellwork with an ice kitsune is a mark of accomplishment. They can act as primary or secondary focus for many rituals, and can coordinate magic from other magicworking creatures which might not otherwise work well together, such as a vetus and a snow vevex ray. Ice kitsunes specialize in defensive magics, and the best of them can draw power not only from their environs, but can drain it from hostile spells, even in the moment of attack.
General Description
Spoiler
Bred over thousands of years from their wild kitsune cousins, these highly sought-after creatures have exchanged some of their innate stealth for strong elemental powers and increased intelligence. Several breeds were developed, each specializing in a separate field, with fire and ice the most famous and popular. Although their abilities allow them to manipulate energies of their element with ease and grace, they do not generate magic themselves. Instead, they act as channel for magic energy. They can imperceptibly siphon energy from their environs and even other creatures to fuel spells. Likewise, their magi can channel spells through them, increasing their power and precision. These creatures are an invaluable aid to any magi studying the forces they specialize in.

Also, the eggs have to be unfrozen when turned in.

I would love a counter to know how many eggs we've personally contributed, and also a counter for how many total contributed if we can?

What I want to know is about the text:
Spoiler
"... may not be many days before the Xand Bears are gone."

Is that literal? And the Xand Bears will no longer drop at the end of the event? Or is that just talking about the flood in the Stream? Or is it just quest lines and they will still stick around at the conclusion of the event?

I'm wondering if you get a badge at all after handing so many in.

I'm up to 30 right now...

It probably doesn't depend on if we complete it or not. If we get enough eggs, they stay! If we don't get enough eggs, they'll probably not disappear. ((As in: Just quest lines. Probably.))

I have no idea how many I handed in o.o I handed in a bunch of batches of four, but then started handing in batches of twos =/

I find it unlikely that they'll be getting rid of Xand bears entirely, the flooding will probably just be ending.

I'd love for a teeny tiny Xand bear badge, that'd be adorable <3

I'm the same, but I started with 2 at a time and then switched to 3. I'd give 4, but I have a shark egg holding up a spot. LOL

I had JUST bred before the quest went live, so I used some leftover chocolates to grow an egg and did one at a time for a bit, then just said to hell with it and fed chocolate to the rest of my eggs.

I have handed in over 100 (I think 102 by my count) Xand eggs. Still no badge.

I think I'm going to give my carpal tunnel a rest and let someone else figure out if there's a badge at a higher number. :woo:
