Something kept nagging at my mind as I dragged the deer and the squirrel back to the cave. I knew it was something important, but it didn't have to do with the strange way Snow had given up the deer.

For now, I had chosen to ignore the nagging thought. I slowly climbed the slope up to my cave. After I had set down my prey, it took me a few moments to realize Black was gone.

The cave was empty. Black's fading scent still hung in the air, and I knew that he had been gone for at least an hour. I tensed. Black had been alone when he left. I could tell because there wasn't any sign of a fight, and there were no strange smells.

I spun around fast. I knew that tracking my brother was hopeless due to my terrible sense of smell, but I had to try. Farther down the slope, Black's scent picked up again. I charged down the slope, only pausing to regain my bearings and find the scent again.

The trail ended about one hundred feet from the bottom of the slope. I sat and let my fear creep over. My mind raced from one thought to another.

Black would have told me if he was going hunting or if he had any plans to go out before I left. He was sick, so he might have been walking around in a confused state.

Wait. I paused a moment. He was sick, and confused. What if he had fallen into the river? It wasn't too far away from the cave, and he could have... No, the river was frozen. Black would have walked right across it instead of falling in.

Did Black abandon me? I thought sadly. It would have made some sense. Black was great at hunting and fighting, but what ruled out that thought was the fact that he was sick.

Could Snow have taken him? No, I would have smelled something, or heard something at the very least. After Snow gave up the deer, she had walked away from the cave. So now I could rule out her.

Then, I heard paw steps. I stood quickly, hoping that it would be Black. I was disappointed. Snow was walking towards me.

"Hi, Snow," I greeted her.

She looked toward me. "Hello, Rain. What's that smell?"

"Dead deer?" I guessed.

"No, it smells like wolf."

My ears pricked. "Does it smell like me?"

"Sort of," Snow answered. "Can't you smell it?"

"No, I have a horrible sense of smell. Can you follow it?" I asked.

"Of course!" Snow made it sound like I was the crazy one. "Why? Are you looking for someone?"

I did not want to explain myself to Snow. I met the massive wolf's gaze and said, "Can you follow it or not?"

"Alright! Fine! I'll follow your stupid wolf-scent for you!" Snow turned away from the cave and stalked off into the woods, and I followed her. Too bad I didn't know then what would happen later, because I would have gone alone. As it would turn out, Snow was a lot more trouble then she was worth.

You also both joined on the same day at roughly the same time. Surprising, that.

This is good. Most of the endings are enough of a cliffhanger that you have to read the next part. Good job.

I loved it, it's really intriguing. Write more, please! Though I agree with the genral concensus. You need to spend more time on description, primarily the wolves and their surroundings. But it's clear that a lot of thought has gone into this, so keep up the brilliant work! I will be stalking this thread from now on...
