My Birthday (Short story)

Post by AHorseNamedPalette »

Sunlight peeked through the cave and soaked into my eyelids waking me from a plentiful rest. I took a deep breath and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. Behind me, Red awoke from her snooze and shook the haze out of her head, throwing some of her mane in my face. I spit out the strings of hair that landed in my mouth and sat up. A turned around and patted Red on the neck. She nickered her good morning.

"Good morning, Red!" I said. I stood up and stretched. I turned around to look at the calendar I had gotten from a trash can in a nearby city. I looked at the marks I had made on the calendar using leftover charcoal and my eyes landed on the current day. It is May 13th. My birthday. I squealed with joy and jumped on the back of Red, who was still shaking the sleep from her mind. She was wide awake now. She snorted as I landed on her back, nearly hitting her scarlet wings.

"C'mon, Red! It's my birthday! What do you say we dig up the gold we've been saving and get that dragon-pup I've been looking at?" Red snorted and stamped her foot in refusal. The idea of a new pet bothered her.

"We can get you a bag of sugar-roots!" I offered. She whinnied and flapped her wings in excitement. The idea of eating those sweet-tasting plants was too enticing to say no. I urged her on and she galloped outside the cave. As she reached the entrance she spread her wings and we took to the skies, heading towards the Prestige City shops. As we flew over to the city I raised my hands to the sky, whooping with joy.

"Look out world!" I yelled, "I'm getting a dragon pup!" This would be a great birthday.
