Twisted Fate ch 2 up (a medieval fantasy/romance/adventure)

Post by Phoenixwildfire »

A mysterious woman somehow falls into Taron's lake, with no idea who she is, or where she's from. She's an odd girl- bright red hair and green eyes, with a curiosity that might even rival his own. Determined to find out who she might be, he starts casting every scrying spell he knows, only to have them blow up in his face- literally.
After a summons to help the Masters rescue their long lost prince, he has to drag her with her on his mission. Somehow she seems to be caught up in the mess- though people don't know who she is or where she's from. The strange woman seems determined to rescue a man she doesn't even know- and finding him might finally reveal her past.

Mild swearing/violence- scenes will be left out. Love triangle warning o3o

Ch. 1

The icy water surrounded her, freezing her limbs until she could no longer feel them. She cried out in terror, not knowing how she had gotten there, only to have her lungs fill with the same icy chill. She was about to give up her seemingly hopeless struggle when something pulled her up, dragging her onto land. She sputtered painfully, looking up into bright blue eyes before her vision seemed to haze into darkness.

Taron dragged the strange woman from the freezing waters, cursing and gasping as his own body started shivering violently after diving in after her. What she was doing out here naked he had no idea- nonetheless taking a dip in freezing ice-crusted waters. Was she mad? Suicidal? He wouldn’t know until she woke up again, having passed out from her ordeal. He grabbed the thick blue cloak off the boulder he had thrown it on to dive into the water, draping it around her body for warmth and decency.

He looked over to his horse, who watched with idle curiosity, chewing at the new spring growth beneath the layer of snow. He carried her over and draped her across the horse’s rump before mounting as well, shuddering suddenly from the cold as he made his way back home.

A man stood before her, sword raised in defense. She seemed to tower above him in size, yet the man was determined to keep her from harm. Men advanced toward them, weapons drawn and hands glowing with the menace of strong magic. The man protecting her shouted in alarm as one of the attackers threw a stream of magic toward her, her entire being enveloped in pain. Another beam hit her- trying to soothe and repair- but it was too late. With a final scream, everything vanished from sight.

She woke with a shout, looking around to find herself in a small room with no sign of either her guardian or enemies. Trying to catch her breath, she saw the room had stone walls and several bookshelves heavily laden with thick books. The door across the room opened and a man walked in- looking very different from those in her vision. Instead of the dark complexion they had appeared, this man was fair haired, light skinned and lanky.

He looked toward her in relief and walked toward the bed, his face turning a strange shade of red at the sight of the blanket falling from her shoulders. She didn’t seem to mind or care, so he brought it back up, settling it more securely around her shoulders before clearing his throat in embarrassment.

“So… mind telling me how you wound up in my lake, naked? Do you have a death wish or something?” He asked, trying to make light of the awkward situation.

She shook her head in confusion. “I don’t remember.”

The man sighed in aggravation, raking a hand through his blond hair. “Right. Who are you, then?”

The woman thought for a moment before shrugging.

“You don’t know?” He gasped. “What’s your name?”

“What’s a name?” She tilted her head.

“What do people call you?” Now he sounded annoyed.

“I remember someone calling me Fira.” She said simply. “Is that a name?”

“It’ll do, I hope.” He grumbled in frustration. “So Fira, do you remember where you’re from?”

Fira frowned and shook her head again.

“Well, it must be somewhere out east with that hair.” He pointed to her.

Fira looked down to see ringlets of bright red hair falling around her shoulders. “I suppose.” She said simply. She reached up to tug at one of the curls, smiling in amusement when it sprang back up against her.

“Alright.” The man set his thumb and forefinger against his head as if concentrating or holding off a headache. “No origin, no past, just a name. How is it I always get stuck with all the problems around here? It’s not like I’m the only wizard here.”

Fira hissed in alarm and backed up quickly away from him. Wizard meant magic- and magic hurt!

“Hey- woah!” He held up his hands in a gesture of peace. “I’m not going to hurt you. My name is Taron. I dragged you out from the lake and brought you here so you wouldn’t freeze.”

Fira remembered his bright blue eyes before she had passed out, the same eyes that were watching her now. She relaxed a bit, but was still wary of him. “Thank you for rescuing me.”

“No problem.” Taron smiled in relief when she calmed. “So are you okay? Any headaches or broken bones I should know about?”

Fira shook her head, feeling no pain. “No, just cold.”

“You’ll get used to that up here.” Taron chuckled in amusement. “It’s always cold in the mountains.”

She looked outside the window to the tiny room, seeing the craggy peaks of the mountains in the distance. Somehow they seemed comforting.

“Now, I don’t have any women’s clothes here, so I’ll have to go ask the neighbor for some. Just stay here and relax, okay?” Taron watched her warily, as if afraid she might suddenly go mad after he left.

Fira nodded, watching as he stood and with one last glance over his shoulder to her, exited the room. She sat in silence for a bit, looking around before her eyes caught on the bookshelves across the room, colorful bindings intriguing her. She knew they had information in them… information that might help her remember who she was.

She crawled along the bed, not noticing the blanket falling away again before she reached toward the bookshelf, picking up one of the books and flipping through it. She looked at the scribbles on the page, her eyebrows furrowing in frustration that she didn’t know what it said. She stopped at a page with an illustration of a castle, running her fingers along the ink of the drawing that seemed like it might come off the page.

She wondered why the sight of it created such sadness in her, a deep sense of dread filling her when she realized she might be missed somewhere. She had no idea who she was… what if she was some nameless no one who didn’t matter? What if she as an important person that might have people looking for her even as she sat here? Taron seemed to genuinely want to help her, and for that she was grateful. He may have magic, but he seemed like a good man. She picked up another book, flipping through the pages to find any illustrations she might be able to recognize.

Taron knocked on the door to Ara’s house, shifting uneasily in the snow at the awkward question he had to ask. ‘Hi, I have some strange woman at my house who’s currently naked. Can I have some clothes’? Nope, that didn’t sound odd at all.

Ara opened the door, smiling at the sight of him. She sported the same mountain-dweller appearance of pale skin and hair, moving aside to let him in from the cold. “Hello Taron, what brings you here?”

“Well, I have a bit of an issue.” He said uneasily, trying to find the right way to ask without sounding like a creep.

“An issue? You always have an issue.” She giggled before sitting in one of the chairs in her small stone house.

“I know.” He grumbled. “This one is different. I was out hunting and found this girl in my lake- she… well I don’t have any clothes that will fit her. She’s much taller than mother.” He said finally.

“A girl? Is she alright?” Ara’s eyes widened in alarm.

“She’s lost her memories, but otherwise she seems fine.” Taron sighed with relief when she got up to go to the other room, bringing back a light blue dress for him.

“That sounds serious. Perhaps you should bring her to the paladins for healing?” She shrugged after handing him the outfit.

“That’s not a bad idea.” Taron nodded. “They’re not too far away anyway. Thanks for the dress, Ara. I owe you.” He waved in farewell as he stood.

“Oh that’s fine, you can just enchant my garden again.” She smiled wickedly as he groaned in pain. Enchanting that garden to be impervious to cold was both draining and complicated. She sure did ask a lot.

“Alright- I’ll enchant it come spring.” He promised with a grimace.

She giggled happily and clapped her hands together in triumph. “Have fun with your strange girl, Taron. I hope she remembers who she is.”

“Me too.” He shook his head as he headed back to his tower.

He walked back up to the room to find Fira looking at books, the blanket completely forgotten as she sat naked on his bed.

“Gods woman, have you no modesty?” He grumbled as she looked up at him and smiled in greeting, obviously not caring that she was bare.

“Why, is it bad to not have clothes?” She asked innocently, looking up at him in confusion. He set the blanket over her again, then covered his mouth in an attempt to not spout something about a man taking advantage of the fact she didn’t know better. He wasn’t like that ,and didn’t want to give her that impression.

“Most people like it when you wear something to cover yourself up.” He said, holding the dress out for her. “Put this on, and then we’ll talk more.”

Fira took the dress, looking at it curiously before letting out a small noise of confusion.

Taron groaned in agony, his face turning an even brighter shade of red. He looked up at the sky in a prayer to help him before he took the dress from her. He bunched it up to make the process as quick and easy as possible, shoving it over her head and pulling her arms through the sleeves before letting the skirt fall around the rest of her. He avoided looking at her as much as possible during the process, but couldn’t help seeing her.

“There.” He said happily once she was covered, looking down at herself curiously.

“It’s itchy.” She wrinkled her nose in distaste.

“It will do for now until I can get you something better. You can’t take it off!” He said hastily when she started bringing the hem back up. “You have to stay covered.” Gods, it was like talking to a child.

“Why should I cover myself?” She said in frustration. “It’s not comfortable, and a blanket keeps me just as warm when I get cold. Do I look disgusting to others?”

“No- it’s not that you look bad.” He put a hand over his face to try to hide his embarrassment. “People don’t like seeing others naked, it makes them uncomfortable. Clothes cover you up so people will be more willing to be around you.”

“But why?” she insisted. “Why cover yourself up? It makes finding a proper mate that much harder- you don’t know what’s underneath!” She crossed her arms in front of her chest stubbornly.

“That’s the point.” He said, finally thinking of something. “You court a person so that they’re comfortable enough to reveal themselves to mate. You can’t just run around without clothing, because then you’ll tell everyone you want to 'mate'.” True enough, but an odd way of explaining things.

She seemed to understand that, looking up at him thoughtfully. “So… clothes are part of mating?”

“Kind of.” He shook his head in frustration. “Where did you come from that you don’t even where clothes?”
“I told you, I don’t remember.” She gave him an aggravated look. “I don’t remember anything other than people called me Fira, and I’m very tall. I was in a lot of pain when someone hit me with magic, and now I’m here.”

“Wait- what? Someone hit you with magic?” Taron blinked in surprise at this new information. “What did they look like? What magic did they use?”

“A man was protecting me- he had dark hair, and had brown skin.” She thought for a moment. “The people attacking looked different- they had black hair as well, but had lighter skin. The magic was a beam that was thrown at me. It hurt a lot.” She flinched at the memory.

“That sounds like the southern desert dwellers and their flesh magic.” Taron said thoughtfully, tapping a finger against his chin as he thought. “No idea who the other fellow is, though. Not many in the north have dark skin like that- that’s more southern countries.” He glanced down at her curiously.

“What’s that?” Fira pointed toward the window as a hawk landed on the sill outside, waiting patiently.

“Uh oh.” Taron frowned at the sight of the royal messenger, opening the glass pane to take the note from the hawk’s leg. He unraveled it and his shoulders sagged at the message.

“Well Fira, it looks like we’re going to go sooner than I thought.” He said, crumbling up the note and setting it on fire in his palm, waiting until it burned completely before flicking the ashes away. “We need to rescue a prince, lucky us- but we have to stop by the paladins to pick up another person who’s going to be part of our search party.

“A prince?” Fira said thoughtfully. “Is it very far?”

“Yeah, it’ll take a while to get there, but the paladins are nearby. We have to meet someone called Jalin.” Hopefully he wouldn’t be too much of a brainless idiot… those paladins tended to be all muscle and no thought.

“Maybe they’ll know who I am.” She smiled eagerly.

“Perhaps- but unlikely. What they may be able to do is heal you so you’ll remember on your own.”

Fira nodded eagerly, standing from the bed, only to fall forward and let out a yell of alarm before Taron caught her.

“My legs don’t work.” She looked down at them in fear.

“What, you can’t feel them?” Taron asked uneasily.

“No, they just don’t work right.” She said, standing up again, her arms fanning out as she tried to balance herself. She finally took a step forward, this time not falling. She smiled happily and took a more comfortable step forward, making her way slowly to the door.

“You don’t remember how to walk?” Taron watched her nervously.

“I do now.” Fira glanced over to him stubbornly. “It’s just different somehow.”

Taron shook his head again and opened the door for her, leading her down the stairs slowly, readying his horse to make their way to the paladins.

((Can't write the complete chapter on my kindle so this will be in two parts! As always, comment for the next part!))

Fira was thankful for the thick cloak Taron had given her, holding it tightly to herself as she walked beside him through the snow. Though clothes were something new to her, the warm soft feel of the fur-lined fabric felt wonderful.
She glanced over to Taron, who had a similar fur lined robe with long sleeves. The snow crunched beneath her feet, her oversize shoes making clomping noises as they walked silently.
"So where are we going? You said a paladin, but I don't know what that is." She tried to look past the fuzzy brim of her hood to see him speak.
"Padalins are warroirs that protect the weak. They have healing magic and slay dangerous creatures like rogue dragons and such" Taron looked back at her. "They're not too far away, just half a day's walk."
The description of paladins made her uneasy for some reason. "They're good though, right?"
"Right. Which is why we're meeting one to travel with us." Taron nodded. "If we get into trouble, we'll have both his sword and my magic to defend us."
Fora nodded and felt a strange tingling in her spine. She put her hand there, but felt nothing strange so decided not to say anything.
The rest of the trip was spent asking questions about plants and animals Fira saw, Taron answering her questions patiently. When they finally arrived at castle the paladins lived in Cirque couldn't help but gape at the massive scale of the structure. She suddenly had a strange urge to climb up the stone walls.
Taron moved forward to slam the large knocker against the worn ancient door, the noise echoing through the courtyard.
"Who goes there?" A guard leaned over the side of the palacade high above them
"The wizard Taron seeks Jalin the paladin." Taron shouted back. The knight seemed to confer with someone before opening the door.
Out of the lowered gate rode a paladin, small compared to the war horse he rode, but sitting tall and comfortably in his saddle."I am Jalin." He said, looking down at them with a slight frown. "I know you are Taron, but who is this?"
"This is lady Fira, sir knight." Taron introduced them. "She comes requesting healing. She has lost her memories in an injury."

uhm I think you accidentally wrote Cirque instead of Fira/Tirade, or not? I mean, the sentence as a whole is a little messed up to comprehend. xD It's at the end of the short second part of chap2.
And why is Taron (oh god it's an anagram of Toran) acting like he doesn't know her in the beginning, and then later introduces her as a lady? Or is he lying, or was he just questioning her those things in order to determine the weight of the injury? *mind blown* maaaaaaaan... I'm so confused right now. xD
Yay I love it :D I remember you from dra forums, sadly you didn't finish Lunar Embrace *sob* oh, well.
I can't wait for you to post more of this. :D

I'm pretty sure he's using 'lady' to be polite.

Though Phoe you did put 'Fora' at one point, then at the end he introduced her as 'Triade', even though her name(or what they are using as a name) was Fira. Unless that was on purpose, idk.
