Prologue: Green Eyes
Spoiler
As I walked by the mirror a flash of green on my face caught my attention. I’d been about to take a shower as I’d just gotten home from my afternoon jog, but the sight caused me to look back. I glanced at my own reflection and a small gasp escaped my lips. NO! This wasn’t possible… my eyes are blue, not green! No matter what I thought, the reflection staring back at me undoubtedly had intense green eyes. Intense green eyes with black-slit pupils that seemed to stare straight through me. This can’t be happening. I squeezed my eyes tight shut and kept telling myself I was seeing things. I almost opened them, but when I went to open them again I heard a voice.
“Ah, darling, it’s about time we finally met,” the voice growled. The sure sound of the voice sent shutters of fear crackling down my spine. It was a soft, low growl, yet at the same time it was alluring and velvety smooth. It seemed to speak from within my soul and strike my ears from within my head. That’s not possible either I tried to calm myself down.
“W-who’s there?” the worlds tumbled out of my mouth on their own. I forced my eyes to open and didn’t dare look into the mirror. My eyes searched around the bathroom; its hard tile floors, the blue curtains that hung from the window, the matching blue towels that hung from the pole of the shower curtain… they all looked the same. Nothing was different. No one was there.
“You can’t see me, darling. I’m a part of you, it’s not possible for you to see within yourself,” the voice seemed to be laughing at me. Its tone was still that same melodically rough tone, but this time it had a light air to it.
“What do you mean?” I took a long, hard swallow and kept my eyes trained on the floor. My hands were shaking silently and I didn’t dare face the mirror again. My eyes were locked on the grey tile and traced along the edges on each individual piece. I hoped they were normal again.
“Look in the mirror! I’ve revealed myself already,” the voice chimed, seeming to laugh even more now that it had me scared out of my shoes. I gasped uncontrollably and shivered. My eyes slowly took themselves from the floor and began to trail up towards the mirror. As much as I wanted to stop them, I couldn’t. Against my own will they had been locked into their target. The mirror. I was forced to look at my reflection and see the same intense green eyes staring back at me. Eyes that were not my own. “There we go.”
“No,” I mumbled aloud, unable to form any other words. This couldn’t be happening. Things like this don’t just happen. I struggled to regain control of myself and took an unsure step back away from the mirror. I tried so squeeze my eyes shut tight again, but some unknown force held them open and locking them onto my own reflection.
“Nice that you’ve finally met me, darling. It’s so hard to live inside someone who has no idea you exist,” the voice rattled. Its growling tone rumbled up from inside my head and my unnatural green eyes widened a bit. At least they still act naturally…
“Inside?” I choked out as my entire body when stiff where I stood. I could see the slight shimmer of tears welling up into those wide, green eyes that I couldn’t stop watching. They were a mystery to me. As afraid of them as I was, they enchanted me. They were so beautiful, yet so alien; so different on my pale-skinned human face.
“I live in your soul, I’ve always lived here. Haven’t you ever gotten angry for no reason? Had a hate you couldn’t explain? That’s your demon, darling. That’s me,” the voice growled to my brain, rambling on as it explained its presence. I hung onto every word it said, fear gripping my body in its icy arms and a single tear dripping down my face. Why me?
“Why you? Well, simply because your cursed,” the voice responded. I gasped that it replied. Could it really hear what I was thinking? “I can hear everything you think. And stop calling me an it, I’m a female and I’m a demon,” the inner demon growled at me, making me shriek quietly and more tears drip down my face and splash onto the bathroom counter. I was still looking at the green eyes and I could only watch the tears roll down my face. I mentally begged the demon to leave me alone. I wanted my own body!
“I’m part of you, I can’t leave,” the demon laughed. The rough sound of its laugh almost hurt my ears. I shivered fought yet again to close my eyes, desperately trying to regain control. The demon was strong, but I had to be stronger.
“My eyes,” I gasped. “Will they go back to normal?” I hoped they would go back to the way they belonged, I’d look like a freak walking around with bright green demon eyes all the time. I can only imagine the names they’d call me…
“Of course they will, if I make them. I can turn you into myself if I want too,” the demon cackled. I silently hoped she didn’t show off these powers, but this only made the insane sound grow louder and a strange feeling course through my bones. Uh-oh.
The change started in my hands. I felt an odd tingling that almost stung my hands and made me gasp. My eyes tore themselves from the mirror and locked onto my them. They started to shake ever so slightly and I felt pressure on my finger tips. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing as a pair of long, black claws stretched from the tips on my fingers and completely morphed my hands. My feet started to change as well, claws growing out of the tips of my toes, although these were slightly sorter. I let out a shriek of shock and fear, tears building and falling even faster. My eyes were drawn back to the mirror so I could see other parts of myself begin to change.
From the mirror I could see a long, lashing tail sprouting up from my back. It swung from side to side, looking much like a monkey’s, only a lot longer and more flexible. Two large spikes that resembled the claws emerged from the tip of the tail and looked extremely dangerous. My entire body tingled and my skin started to grow a somewhat scaly texture and fade into bright red color. This is what scared me the most… Green eyes? AND NOW RED SCALES? What’s happening to me?! I started choking out loud, horrified sobs as I started, mesmerized, at my own reflection.
“Don’t cry, darling. It’s about time you met your real self,” the demon whispered, and as if by magic, I felt myself starting to relax. Something in that velvety tone absorbed all ounces of fear from me, even if the voice was still rough. It was almost like listening to a lullaby before you fall asleep. The voice was calm, comforting, and even left me wishing it would speak again. I reached my hands up very slowly and they felt unfamiliar as I touched them to my face, careful of the long claws. My skin felt smooth and scaly, and I imagined my hands felt the same way.
“I… I will turn back, right?” I whispered softly, running my clawed fingers across the side of my face and down my arms. The scales felt so hard and unnatural, yet part of me liked them. The demon’s voice had soothed my crying soul and caused me to really marvel at the changes I’d undergone. Even the green eyes didn’t cause shooting fear anymore, they looked stunningly beautiful to me now.
“Of course, darling. Just enjoy the beauty while you’ve got it,” the demon purred. I smiled slightly at the sound of its voice, my now green-skinned lips turning upward. Beautiful… I’m so beautiful. I stopped moving my hands across the scales and held them out in front of me, admiring the long claws. They were a shining black and could probably cut through almost anything. I loved them so much. I didn’t know why the fear had melted, or why I was so affectionate to my body, but I was. The demon knew it, too. My subconscious mind probably knew she had something to do with this, but I didn’t care. I was utterly in awe. I wiggled my fingers, marveling at the claws and the way my scales reflected the light.
“Glad you like them, darling. However, it’s time for me to go,” the demon muttered in my ears. It took a moment for me to realize what she was saying, and another gasp escaped my lips.
“Don’t leave,” I begged, not wanting to loose the beauty. I wanted to stay a demon, to live as a demon. My mind had been persuaded to love this body.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be back,” the demon promised, her voice yet again sending calming thoughts through my mind. I smiled at the thought, and then started to feel dizzy. The next thing I new, my head was falling towards the floor and everything went black.
