Chosen Fate - A Kitsune Story - DONE!

Post by moondragon »

So I've always wondered where magistream got the idea for the kitsune. I googled it, and ended up stumbling across a wiki page about kitsune. I loved the sound of the many tailed foxes, so I decided to write a story about them. I'd really like some opinions on it, so if you could please at least read the prologue and comment I'd really appreciate it. Also, please vote on the poll![If there is one at the moment.] Note that this isn't edited, so there'll be a few mistakes here and there. My apologizes in advance!
~ Moon
Note: These aren't exactly the same as magistream kitsune. I've taken kitsune as wiki explained and molded them with my imagination to form the plot. You can feel free to ask questions.

Prologue: A Strange Fox
Spoiler
I wandered through the tall grass, scenting the air and looking for something to eat. It was a cool early autumn, and a breeze was ruffling through my white fur. Yes, I was a fox but my fur was white. Not artic fox white, but ghost white. Almost clear. Except, for a small grey patch on my shoulder, which was quite oddly shaped.
I supposed my appearance was the reason my mother had named me Ghost. She’d been killed a few years ago, by a hunter. Although, unlike most foxes who lost someone to the humans, I could never bring myself to hate them. It was like, somehow, I knew my mother’s death was a part of my life. That there was a reason for it.
My mother had been the only one who never looked at me like a freak. Other foxes stayed away from me, my fur color seemed to ward them away. It was as if I was different, alien. I don’t’ mind being alone all the time, I’m quite used to it by now. It doesn’t bother me much. Because, I never really feel alone.
Sometimes, I think I can feel another presence by my side, watching me constantly. As if the pair of eyes I’m yet to see are boring into my soul itself. There is one down side to being alone, though. My bright white fur makes me seeable from quite a distance, so, naturally, I have a hard time hunting. Perhaps, if I had a companion, they could hunt me food. But, the mysterious presence next to me is of no help. I’ve yet to hear it speak.
So I sighed, scenting the air again. I could only pray to the spirits themselves that I might sleep with a full stomach tonight. As I wandered, I strayed farther and farther from the forest I called home. I knew I wouldn’t get lost, but I knew I wouldn’t be going home today either.
Suddenly, the sweet smell of mouse struck my nose. My body fluttered with hope as I thought that for once, I might find something worth eating. Catching it was another story. I practically lived on road kill, savaging for a living. I sucked in air again, smelling the wonderful scent of mouse that makes my mouth water with temptation.
I scan the area, following the scent. Another breeze blows by and I shiver as night begins to set in, but don’t give up my hunt. This could be the only chance I get at food in a while, and I don’t want to loose it.
I smelt the breeze as it passed, it was coming from the direction of the mouse. As silently as I could manage, I headed in the mouse’s direction. I soon spotted it. The mouse was rather plump, and was nibbling on a seed at the base of a tree.
“Prepare to die,” I whispered silently, dropping into a crouch and moving at the mouse from behind. Please don’t see me! Please don’t see me!
I was about to lunge when my hind paw crunched on a stick. Aww crap! I looked straight at the mouse. It had frozen in it’s eating. I stayed perfectly still, praying it didn’t turn around. Thankfully, the mouse didn’t turn. I sighed a breath of relief I didn’t know I was holding.
Then, I lunged out with my claws stretched. The mouse let out a startled eek as my claws pinned it down. I clamped my jaws on its neck and killed it easily. My stomach rumbled slightly.
“Finally! Real food!” I exclaimed excitedly, taking a huge bite of the mouse. I chewed slowly, letting the flavors of the fresh food I’d wanted for so long flood my mouth. I growled, taking another bite of the mouse. Oh, I missed food!
I kept eating, my full focus on my food. I was so hungry. I let out a sad sigh as I looked at the mouse to find it was gone. But, my stomach felt more full and contented than it had in a long time. A large yawn escaped my jaws, and I was too tired to go back home tonight. I’d just have to sleep here.
Another yawn escaped me as I curled up at the base of the tree, bushing the mouse carcass away and towards the taller grass. My eyes drifted closed and I felt myself being consumed by the darkness of sleep. Then a voice struck my ears.
“Who dares hunt on the land of The Auras?” A voice suddenly growled. “And now you sleep here?” I froze. I hadn’t realized I’d stepped onto another animal’s territory. It had never come to my attention that I was the only other predator here… I blinked my eyes open and got to my paws.
“S-Sorry,” I stuttered out. “I didn’t realize I’d-” I was cut off by a snarl that sent shivers rushing down my spine. Before I could even move I saw a flash of white fur and was tackled to my side. The animal growled and bit around my throat, not breaking my skin, simply holding my head to the ground.
“P-Please,” I choked out. “Let m-me go.” I was fighting the overwhelming urge to pass out as sheer shock and fear coursed through my body, making my blood pump through my ears faster, heating them up. My heart was racing, and I could hear it pounding in my chest.
“I said who are you?” the voice demanded in a growl, not releasing its grip on my throat. I couldn’t see my attacker, I was pinned to the ground. My crystal blue eyes staring open in shock.
“G-Ghost,” I stuttered my name out, my eyes dropping as I felt a blackness at the edge of my mind. It was fighting to consume me, fighting to take me into unconsciousness.
“Why are you here,” The creature snarled. Its grip on my throat loosened as it must have felt how scared I was.
“I-I was hungry… And hunting,” I sputtered, taking a deep breath and trying to will myself to calm down. I wasn’t doing very well. I hadn’t meant to stumble into this animal’s territory. I honestly didn’t want trouble.
“Hmm,” the voice released its grip, stepping back from me. I released I breath in relief and scrambled to my paws, jolting back into the tree and away from my attacker. I blinked my eyes, looking up.
“W-What are you?” I gasped in shock at the creature before me. He looked like a normal fox, an artic fox. His fur was a white and creamy color, and his eyes were green. A bright green that seemed so full of life and energy. I couldn’t help but gaze into them. But then, this was what made me shiver.
Where the fox’s tail was… There wasn’t one tail. No, there were four. He had four bushy fox tails coming from his behind. I wanted to inspect him further, but for some reason my glance could never be torn far from his eyes. They were so vibrant… So green.
“Take a picture, it’ll last longer,” the creature snapped sarcastically.
“S-Sorry,” I stumbled over my words. I had been gawking at him… Which now that I think about it is rather rude of me.
“To answer your question, I’m a Kitsune. And my name is Reeku,” the white creature said. He didn’t seem at all interesting in me, now that he knew I was nothing but a freaky white fox.
“I apologize f-for trespassing,” I looked down at my paws, a tad nervous. I had trespassed, and Reeku could have taken my life if he’d wanted too. I should be more careful from now on. I wouldn’t want something like this to happen again.
“Well you should have-” Reeku froze in mid sentence. I waited for a moment, but he said nothing more. I looked up to see him staring right at me. Right at the grey mark on my shoulder.
“Take a picture, it’ll last longer,” I snapped, mimicking his words. He was about to lecture me on trespassing, and I didn’t want to hear it. I heard him chuckling softly.
“Fine, I will,” Reeku replied, looking at me, daring me to say something to him. “Better yet, I’ll just take you with me.”
“T-Take me where?” I asked, unsure. I certainly didn’t want to go anywhere with him… In all honestly, Reeku filled me with fear. I’d never seen anything like him… He was different. A lot like… Like me.
“To see Oak, of course,” Reeku replied, like it was extremely obvious. He may scare me, may be different like me, but I could tell already I probably wouldn’t like him. He was sarcastic and secretive. Blunt…
“Who?” I asked, confused. If Oak was anything like him, then I’d better be afraid for my life.
“Oak, my leader,” Reeku gave me a “duh” look. “He’ll want to see that mark. The one that’s on your shoulder.”
“Oh, that little grey mark?” I was even more confused. Why would anyone want to see me because of some mark on my shoulder? Especially someone who was a leader of four-tailed foxes! He must have something better to do other than waste him time talking to a misfit like me. A loner… A freak of nature.
“Yeah, that one,” Reeku snapped, almost like he didn’t like the fact that I referred to it so casually. Like I’d just insulted his momma.
“Oh,” I responded, unsure what else to say. I mean, it wasn’t everyday you met a four-tailed fox that was obsessed with a mark on your shoulder! What was I supposed to say? Reeku turned around, his tails swaying slightly. I couldn’t help but look at them in awe. He started to walk, but turned back to look at me.
“Are you coming?” He snapped impatiently. Rude much? I didn’t even agree that I was coming, did I? No, no I didn’t.
“No,” I replied. I didn’t want to go with him, to meet Oak. In all honestly this was so new to me, being given attention. I wanted to go back to being invisible in the world. Reeku looked at me, his green eyes widening in shock.
“Oh, you’re coming,” he growled, narrowing his eyes. “I’ll make you if I have to.” I gulped, looking down at the ground. Should I go with him? I didn’t want to just agree and look weak, but I honestly didn’t want to know how he’d make me go…
“F-Fine,” I stuttered out, yet toned my voice so I sounded irritated. I didn’t want to look like I was just a big chicken, agreeing because I was afraid.
“Good,” Reeku turned and started walking again. He didn’t look back to make sure I was following him, it was like he knew I was coming. I gulped, taking a deep breath an willing myself to walk forward. I took a few steps, my legs felt like jelly.
“Hurry up!” Reeku snapped. How’d he know how far back I was?
“Sorry!” I called up to him, forcing myself to walk forward. I rushed up beside him, stumbling a bit. I smiled sheepishly as I regained my footing.
“Don’t kill yourself,” Reeku chuckled, his voice having no sympathy even though I’d just tripped right in front of him. I sent him a glare, willing him to catch on fire or drown or something with my eyes.
“Oh, I’m so afraid,” he muttered sarcastically, rolling his eyes at me as if people sent him the death glare all the time. If he was always like this, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised.
“You should be,” I cocked my head to the side and looked at him expectantly, wondering how he would respond.
“Shut up,” he growled, narrowing his eyes at me, obviously annoyed. I made a mental note not to respond to his sarcasm anymore.
I rolled my eyes and walked next to him in silence for a while. The sun had set, and the moon was rising in the sky. I looked up at the stars, gosh they were beautiful. For a moment, I was jealous of the spirits. They got to live up there, in the twinkling lights of the night.
“How much longer?” I asked Reeku, a large yawn escaping my jaws. My paws were starting to hurt. We hadn’t been walking very long, but I’d been out all day and I needed some sleep.
“Not long,” Reeku shrugged, but didn’t stop walking. He didn’t seem to notice how tired I was, and that I was beginning to lag behind.
“Okay,” I yawned again, my eyes beginning to droop as I was walking. I kept blinking, trying to keep sleep from taking me down with it. I kept walking, and soon we came to a small clearing in the forest. There were dens around, which I assumed is where the Kitsune slept.
“Reeku welcome ba- Oh dear lord!” A voice came from behind me, making me jump. A beautiful young Kitsune stepped from the shadows and into the moonlight. I assumed she was on guard. She looked like a common red fox, and had warm brown eyes. She had three tails stretching from her back.
“What Rose?” Reeku asked, confused by the shocked look on Rose’s face.
“Where did you find her?” She asked, looking at me with eyes full of pity. “She’s practically walking in her sleep!”
“No she’s- Oh…,” Reeku looked me over. I guess I looked pretty tired, my eyelids were drooping closed. “Sorry, I didn’t notice.”
“Leave it to you, Reeku!” Rose rolled her eyes, looking at him like a mother scolding a child. Although, I could tell Rose was much young than Reeku was.
“Come on dear, we’ll get you a den,” Rose turned to me, whispering quietly. She lead me to a den nearest to the entrance of the clearing. Without objecting I nodded thankfully, climbing inside and closing my eyes.
“Why did you bring her? Who is she?” I heard Rose asking Reeku outside the den, and I knew she was talking about me.
“Her name is Ghost,” Reeku responded. “She’s the one Rose, she’s the one.” I didn’t hear anymore as the darkness of sleep consumed me and sucked me in. I was out like a light. In a deep, dreamless sleep.
* * * * *

I woke up the next morning and blinked open my eyes, looking around. I sat up, hitting my head on the roof of a den.
“Ouch!” I yipped, flattening my ears down on my head. I glanced around and memories of yesterday flooded my mind, and I gasped. Had I really…? Yes, I had met the Kitsune. I was certain I didn’t imagine it.
Sighing, I climbed from the den and looked around. It was almost noon, going by the sun. Gosh, I’d slept late. Well, I didn’t blame myself. I had been up very late last night.
“She’s alive!” a voice said. I glanced over and seen a golden brownish Kitsune sitting outside in the sun. Her eyes were a stunning gold, and she had a friendly aura. She had seven tails…Whoa that’s a lot.
“Yeah,” I smiled sheepishly, padding over to the Kitsune. “I’m Ghost… Sorry if I’m intruding here.”
“No, not at all,” the Kitsune smiled warmly at me. “I’m Lunea.”
“Oh, nice to meet you,” I said honestly. It was nice to know not all the Kitsune were as sarcastic and rude as Reeku.
“You too,” Lunea grinned. “Oak told me to bring you to him after you woke up. But, I think we have time for breakfast first. Hungry?”
“Food? Yeah!” I exclaimed excitedly. I didn’t get to eat often, and I’d just eaten yesterday. Wow, I could get used to this.
“I admire your enthusiasm,” Lunea chuckled, nodding in the direction she was going to tell me to follow.
“Why thank you,” it wasn’t often that someone told me that actually admired me for something. Lunea laughed and led me into the forest, dropping down into a crouch and scenting the air. I mirrored her.
“This way,” She whispered, heading towards the left. I smelt the scent of squirrel, and I knew that’s what she was going after. My mouth watered at the thought, and I crept silently after Lunea.
The golden Kitsune stopped in front of me, all her tails lowered towards the ground. She lashed out with her claws and killed the squirrel easily, picking it up and dropping it at my paws.
“Well don’t you want some?” I asked, looking down at the food at my paws. I was tempted to just start eating, but that wouldn’t have been a nice thing to do.
“Nah, I ate already,” Lunea laughed, nodding towards the squirrel to tell me to eat. I smiled gratefully at her before beginning my meal.
“You must’ve been hungry, because dang did you eat fast,” Lunea commented when I’d finished.
“Its not exactly easy to hunt with fur like mine,” I smiled, laughing at bit.
“Ahh,” Lunea returned the smile. “Shall we go see Oak then?”
“Sure,” I shrugged, trying to side the fact that I was extremely nervous. Lunea didn’t seem to notice, as she began walking back towards the clearing. I sighed silently, the nervous butterflies crashing around in my stomach. I did my best to pay them no attention.
“Oak’s den is the big cave against the side of the cliff,” Lunea informed me, nodding towards Oak’s den as we entered the clearing again.
“O-Okay,” I stumbled over my words a bit. Wow was this nervousness catching up to me. Go away you stupid jitters!
“Don’t be afraid,” Lunea shot me and encouraging smile. “Oak doesn’t bite… Us anyways.” She laughed a bit at her own joke, and I pretended to laugh along. She didn’t look convinced.
“Let’s just go,” I sighed, forcing myself to follow Lunea. She smiled once more as we stopped outside of Oak’s cave.
“Oak? Its General Lunea. I’ve brought Ghost, may we come in?” Lunea asked. General? What is she talking about? Well if Oak was leader, perhaps she had a special ranking of her own.
“Of course, come in, come in,” came the reply of a rather tired sounding voice. Lunea glanced back at me one last time before walking into the den. I gulped hard, walking after her.
Inside the den it was larger than I expected, and near the back at a Kitsune. His back was to us, and he had nine tails! Holy crap that’s a lot of tails! He was a grayish color, and his tail’s were tipped with a creamy white.
“Oak, I’ve brought Ghost,” Lunea informed. I could tell Oak must be rather old, but he was still highly respected by the other Kitsune. It was quite obvious.
“Ahh, thank you,” Oak’s gruff voice said in response. He turned around, and I could now see his paws were also white. Like he was wearing socks. His eyes were a blue color, and they looked wise. Everything about him looked wise, respectable. There was no doubt why he was leader here.
“Anytime,” Lunea smiled warmly at the elderly Kitsune, dipping her head to him respectfully. I tried my hardest not to look afraid.
“Don’t be nervous young one,” Oak chuckled. “I just wish to speak with you.” I guess I wasn’t doing a very good job hiding my fears.
“Y-Yes sir,” I stuttered out, blinking my eyes and trying to clear my head. You’re okay Ghost, you’re okay.
“I see you have the mark,” Oak nodded, smiling ever so slightly as he glanced at the mark on my shoulder.
“S-Sir, I don’t understand,” I asked silently, confused. Why was everyone here making such a fuss over the mark on my shoulder? What did it mean to them?
“Please, call me Oak,” the old Kitsune smiled at me, sending me a look I didn’t quite understand the meaning of.
“Okay,” I replied, my confidence slowly sinking back into my body. Thank the spirits for that! Now I could stop stuttering like an idiot.
“Now, the mark,” Oak nodded at the small grey spot on my shoulder. “You’re the chosen one. A long time ago a prophecy told of a Kitsune like you. One who bears the mark on their shoulder.”
“B-But, Oak… What have I been chosen for? And I-I’m not a Kitsune,” the confidence was leaving again. Great. Just great.
“Ah, but you are a Kitsune, just not yet,” Oak smiled at me. “Some Kitsune start out as the simplest of foxes, you’ll grow your tail when you’re ready.”
“I’ll grow another tail?” my eyes widened in pure shock. Whoa! You don’t find that out everyday!
“If you live long enough,” Oak nodded like it was nothing. “Which you will.”
“H-How do you know?” I asked softly, not liking the fact that Oak had brought up my death.
“Its in the prophecy,” Oak explained, his eyes yet again landing on the mark on my shoulder.
“Oh,” I wasn’t sure what else to say. I mean, this was all so much to take in. It was almost to much. My head was spinning already.
“For the time being I’d like you to stay here. You’ll be treated like a fellow Aura,” Oak said, but he was looking at Lunea. I supposed he meant she was supposed to watch me. Wait, what was an Aura? I guess that’s what they called themselves… And I have to stay here? Whoa whoa whoa I did not agree to that one!
“Okay,” I said silently, not wanting to object. Oak was so respected, I didn’t dare want to argue with him. This prophecy obviously meant so much to the Kitsune, and I didn’t want to upset them by just walking away.
“Please, make yourself at home,” Oak smiled. “I’m sure Lunea will help you with anything you need.”
“Thank you,” I returned the smile, trying to sound polite and happy. I wasn’t. I just wanted to go home…
“Come on Ghost,” Lunea interrupted my thoughts, heading towards the entrance to the den. I nodded good bye to Oak before following her out, wondering what could possibly lay ahead. What did the future have in store for me?

I'm almost done with chapter one. :hooray:
And, yeah. I've always wanted to get a book published. I RP alot, its good writing pratice. Although, being an author wouldn't be something I'd want as a full time job. Maybe off to the side.
