I kind of assumed the dark magic messed with his head and made him insane. Mix that with growing up poor, and you get his greediness. And who doesn't like shiny things? But that is a very good question. I shall have to think about it, and how it might play into the story.

Could also be that he's a pirate, and pirates steal things.

Book 1
The Finding
Chapter 4
Wherein the story comes to an end, and danger looms.


"Are you okay?" Lorelei stared at Naftali in awe.

The young man nodded. "I'm fine now. When it happened, well, I was scared witless! I probably would have been terrified if I had had more energy. Since we were all almost dead, we couldn't really put up much of a fight... Not that we would have anyway. That man is pretty scary."

Amanra nudged her brother. "Get on with it."

"Fine...So, his crew came aboard our ship. After a moment or two Rackem himself came aboard. He looks a lot younger then I thought he would- about my age. But he's very impressive looking. Aaannyyywayy... He walks onto the deck like he owns the ship! He ordered us all to sit on one side of the ship- he did have one of his crew bring us water, which I was very grateful for. After a bit he went down into the hold. After several more minutes he came up- carrying the eggs. I-" He was cut off by Lorelei who held up a hand.

"Naftali... let me just say one thing... You suck at telling stories. Anyway, please continue."

Said 'storyteller' pouted at the fire magi before continuing.

"So he comes up carrying the eggs. There were four- a Dodo egg, an Albino Nandi Bear egg, a Lethe Kelpie egg, and a Skioros egg. Now those are some pretty rare eggs- and they all were already sold to people. I felt we shouldn't give them up without a fight. So I stood up- naturally, that got Raken's attention. I said something along the lines of: 'You can't take those.'
He raised an eyebrow and smiled, as if he was amused. "Oh?" he said. "Why not?"
"Because they already have owners."
"Well, then they'll just have to be disappointed, won't they?
"They've paid for them."
"Then you'll just have to pay them back."
"Put them back."
"And if I don't, what will you do?" He smirked at me. It was obvious he was having fun.
Now, I had no idea what I would do so I just said the first thing that popped into my mind.
"I'll...I'll make you feel bad.""

The two women stared at him, dumbfounded. Finally, his sister managed to sputter out a sentence.
"Y-You actually said that to him?" She was clearly trying hard not to laugh. Next to her, Lorelei was biting her lip, tears welling from her eyes.

Naftali looked slightly hurt. "Yes. It was the first thing that popped into my head!"

The two girls burst out laughing, leaning on each other for support.

Naftali's frown deepened. "What would you have said?!"

Lorelei took a few deep breaths, whipping tears from her eyes as her body continued to shake with laughter. "Probably something like: Put them back or I'll roast you alive... or... "I'll give you a knuckle sandwich." Not something about making them feel bad."

Naftali glared. "Do you want me to finish telling the story or not?!"

With a snort Amanra motioned for him to continue.

"Ahem... Well, he reacted much the same way you two did- he burst out laughing- as did two of his crew. One was a black-haired girl and the other was a boy with white hair. Even a few of my own shipmates laughed."

Lorelei leaned over to Amanra to whisper "For obvious reasons."

Naftali glared. "I heard that! Anyway, after they all finished laughing he smiled at me.
"Sorry, guilt isn't enough to dissuade me from taking these- but I thank you- I haven't laughed that hard in years." Then he turned on his heel and made his way back to the ship. I tried to follow but that black-haired girl grabbed my arm and pulled me aside. She grinned at me and said:
"You're funny. I think I like you... You'll be mine soon." Then she pushed me away and the rest of Rackem's crew left. Then after a few days we got back here- about four hours ago, actually."
He closed his eyes and gave a confused sort of shrug. "When she said that, all my shipmates got all freaked out- they're acting like I'm about to die or some...thing..." He had glanced at the two girls opposite him- both of them were whiter then sheets.
"What's wrong with you two?"

Amanra jumped up. "What's wrong? WHAT'S WRONG?! Do you have any idea what this means?!"

Naftali blinked. "Um... no."

Lorelei stared at him, open mouthed. "A-Are you just stupid?! Even I know the story of people disappearing after that girl says she takes a liking to them... and you aren't worried?"

Naftali shrugged. "I've heard the stories- I don't believe them."

Both women made a strangled sort of cry. Amanra grabbed her younger brother's shoulders and shook them. "Anyone she's ever said that to has vanished! Remember Tyler? He just vanished! She said she liked him!"

Naftali blinked. "But... he just ran off with some girl."

Lorelei had jumped up by now too. "I know their true- I've know a few people who have had friends or family vanish after meeting her." Her voice was deadly serious.
"Naftali, you need to understand- you're going to be murdered!"



DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNN...Anywho, Fail Chapter is Fail.

Whoo, an update! The plot thickens! I really like what you've done to the story. That legend makes everything really intriguing!

...nevermind. The story here sucked anyway.

I haven't abandoned this. Really. I'm just very busy, and, most of the time I have access to a computer, it is not my laptop, so I have no access to the chapters I've written. Sorry. I should be able to upload a chapter around Christmas.

I'll be looking out for your new chapter! I can't wait to see what happens to Naftali.

Hate Necroing a thread, but just wanted to say that I haven't written anything for this in two years or so, so I'm locking it. I am thinking of doing some short stories about Lorelei meeting her creatures, but only if people are interested. So, let me know if you are. By PMing me.
