Tales from Rayven's Keep

Chapter One - A Keep Her Own

Lightning sighed, blowing back a lock of curly hair from her face. Absently, she tapped the eraser end of a pencil on the notepad in front of her, a few notes cleanly and neatly jotted down. Normally, the young magi would pay rapt attention to a lecture from Thane, but today, her thoughts were elsewhere.

She glanced up as Thane took a break from his lecture on flying spells, sure he was about to chew her out, but he simply took a sip of water from a nearby glass, set aside for this purpose.

Lightning glanced back down at her notebook, flipping to a new page. She felt like doodling, and was sure she could get any notes she'd miss from her friend, Mathew. He always paid attention to Thane. Pressing the sharp tip of her pencil against the paper, an intricate drawing flowed from it.

She refrained from sighing again as she realized what she'd drawn - a keep. And not just any keep, but the one she would shortly be moving to, one that had been in her family for generations. It was replicated from one of the few memories she had of the place, of being held in front of her mother on a pegasus as they returned to the keep after visiting Synara City.

It wasn't a large keep, but it was beautiful. It had been crafted from a gleaming white stone shot through with golden veins, shaped and fit together by magic. The thick walls kept the heat at bay during the summer, and trapped it in the winter. Four gracefull towers were at each of the corners on the rectangular keep, and another, much taller tower soared from the center of the keep, where she and her parents had lived.

Lightning rubbed her eyes tiredly, trying to remember her parents. Her mother, she knew, looked much like her - small and slender, but with killer curves, long, curly brown hair, and large blue eyes. Her father had been taller, tan, with black hair and chocolate brown eyes.

And both had died on a horrific shipwreck.

The plan had been for a young Lightning, only five years old at the time, to stay at the Keep, watched over by Thane, whom had been a good friend of her father's, while they went to seek out some new companions from the Callisto Islands.

Word had reached them several days later that driftwood had washed up on a beach at the Callisto Islands, one of the longer boards bearing the name Golden Dawn, the name of the ship her parents had been on. No one reported any sign of them, and everyone suspected that their bodies had been dragged down to the bottom of the sea.

It had been a great tragedy, not just for Lightning, but for several other young magi as well. Mathew, one of her closest friends, had lost his mother, and Halisa, another young magi in their class, had lost her sister.

Lightning shook her head, feeling slightly dizzy. It's no use dwelling on the past, she told herself sternly, and jumped as a bell tolled lightly. It was the signal that the last class of the day was over, and the students were free to enjoy their weekend however they pleased.

She flipped her notebook closed and shoved it and the pencil into her bag. Halisa, behind her, shook her head ruefully, long auburn hair swinging around her shoulders.

"It's a wonder you find anything in there," the earth magi teased, a smile playing around her lips.

Mathew rolled his dark eyes. "You should be talking, Halisa! The only time I ever got the nerve to sneak out to the girl's dormitory, and it was your pigsty I was stuck in."

Lightning giggled. "Guys, come on. You want to see Rayven's Keep with me?"

The two of them glanced at her, then back at each other, eyes wide in identical surprise. "Of course!" Halisa chimed as Mathew said, "Definitely!"

Lightning smiled. "Great! Then you can help me pack."

Chapter Two - A Gift

Lightning's dormitory room in the Keep was small, but it was crammed with belongings. The small closet was packed with clothes, shoes were shoved under her bed, and a small shelf above the bed was overflowing with small gifts - a scale from a crystalwing, a feather from a pegasus, a fang from a telvian panther.

The small magi opened a top drawer in her dresser and pulled out a few bags, tossing them to Matt and Halisa. "Start filling 'em up. I cast a Bottomless spell on them, so they should be fine."

A Bottomless spell created something like a black hole in the bag it was cast upon. Any item placed in it vanished to the vaccuum of space, but it still held a percentage of its weight.

Lightning kept one bag for herself, and started pulling objects down from the shelf, pausing only as she saw the small block of wood sitting on the end. It had been created by a spell from another magi, created from an image in their mind. The image was of Lightning being held in front of her mother, while her father wrapped an arm around her mother's shoulders. They were all smiling.

With a sigh, she gently plucked it from its place, studying it for a moment. She shook her head and placed it carefully on her nightstand, stripping the blanket from her bed, and wrapping the picture in it before shoving it all into her pack.

While they packed Lightning's room into her bags, several magi stopped by to wish her farewell. She was a well-liked person, and a few magi decided to further their friendship by traveling with her to Rayven's Keep; three more young men by the names of Fallon, Rannor, and Soldor, and two young women named Lucette and Dawntoya.

These five magi also brought Lightning gifts to remember them by. Rannor, kind as sweet as ever, fished an exquisite necklace out of his pocket. It was a slim golden chain, with a tiny, perfectly carved black ice dragon made out of onyx. Lightning felt her mouth drop open, and covered it with her hand.

"It's beautiful!" she gasped, and Rannor, with a smile, fastened it around her neck, then sat on the stripped bed without saying a word. Lucette was up next, a blanket folded over her arm. She snapped it out with a bit of a flourish, and on a field of dark violet was a black raven with golden eyes, beak, and talons, the flag of Rayven's Keep. Lightning jumped up and down, throwing her arms exuberently around Lucette's neck.

"Thank you!" she cried, touching the soft fabric.

The blonde water magi smiled shyly. "I wove it from alpaca wool, so it'll be plenty warm in the winter."

Lightning smiled back at her friend. "You're so thoughtful! I love it."

Dawntoya was next, looking uncharacteristically nervous. "I didn't really know what else to get you," the dark-skinned magi said, and pulled a long train of fabric out of a bag, straightening it out. It was a beautiful, strapless, floor-length red gown, something that looked like a princess would wear it.

Soldor leaned forward, elbows on his knees, and said, "I'll just be sending you some creatures. Keep an eye out for them," he said with a wink.

Fallon, last to present a gift, kept Lightning in suspense, teasing her. "Oh, now where did I put it?" he kept saying, pulling random items out of his pocket, until Lightning finally swatted his arm, and, with a laugh, said, "Fallon, quit it!"

Fallin's hazel eyes danced with mischief, and finally, slowly, lifted an egg out of his pocket - an egg Lightning had been searching for for weeks. "Fallon!" she squealed, practically tackling him. He laughed and handed the red avrael egg over, saying, "I know you've been looking for one, so I found one for you as a going-away present."

Lightning glanced over her bed, strewn with the gifts she'd gotten. "You guys are amazing," she said, and turned to look back at them all.

"But anways, shall we get our lazy butts into motion and go to the Keep?"

Chapter Three - Flight
Lightning shivered in the biting wind, huddling closer into her alpaca wool jacket. She hadn't expected it to be quite this cold. "Next time I get a Keep of my own, remind me to move to it during the summer," she muttered, chattering teeth nearly making her words unintelligable. Casey, her black ice dragon, snorted with amusement, and the young magi scowled at the back of his head.

Soldor pulled up alongside Casey on his fire gryphon, and cupped both hands around his mouth. "Dawntoya thinks there's a storm coming! She and Lucette want to land and make camp."

Lightning nodded, and surveyed the land below for a suitable place for a camp. They were just entering the Caves of Nareu, more than halfway through their journey. Hearing Rannor call out, she glanced over. He was sitting astride his pinto pegasus, motioning to a cave at the foot of one of the smaller mountains.

Casey dove down towards the ground, Lightning swallowing a cry of surprise. He landed neatly in front of the cave, and Lightning slid off, unstrapping a pack from his back. The others landed around her, and ushered into the cave. Lightning glanced up at the sky, noting the winds becoming more and more powerful, before she entered the cave, Casey behind her.

Dawntoya had already established a small fire, and the others were huddled around it, warming their hands. Lightning examined each of them, and was suddenly very glad that these were the people who had decided to journey with her to her keep, to make it beautiful again. A slight smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. This is going to be an amazing journey, she thought to herself.

~*~

All that could be heard was the whistling of the wind as they soared over the great valley of Rayven's Keep. No one said a thing. They were all too spellbound by the beauty of the land.

The keep was settled into a deep valley nestled in the Alasre Mountains. It wasn't a large valley, but its magi had definitely used it to the best of their abilities.

In the north-west, a desert reigned king, burning red sands upset only by a sprawling oasis, a deep pool of crystal-clear water surrounded by palm trees and scrub bushes. A small nearby chain of dormant volcanoes sternly watched over the desert corner.

In the north-east, a massive lake contains dozens of different biomes and depths for the water creatures. In the deepest crater, leviathans and krakens would play. In the shallower end, an immense meadow of seagrass provided sustinence for hippocampis and capricorns. A beautiful tropical island sits proudly in the middle of the lake, golden sands gleaming in the sunlight.

In the south-west, a small, icy tundra stretches across the land. A great lake, too deep to freeze even in the deepest of winters, sits near a cluster of icy mountains.

In the south-east, a great forest claims acres. In the center, a clump of redwoods stretch towards the sky, their lesser cousins of oaks and birches trying vainly to claw their way up to the height of the mighty trees.

There are four passes through the mountains to enter the Keep's lands, and in the center itself sits the Keep. It is a beautiful thing-made of some sort of white stone, shot through with gold veins, put together flawlessly with powerful magic. Swooping towers grace the four corners of the Keep, and the great walls are meters thick. In the center, a tower taller than the others proudly watches over all that is Rayven's Keep.

Lightning led the others to land in front of the Keep, and the babble started.

"It's beautiful!"

"How did anyone even make this?"

"It's the most wonderous thing I've ever seen!"

Lightning smiled. "And you haven't even seen the inside yet."
