Snowfall - A Sonic Fanfic

Post by Syth »

Note: This fanfic is based on Sonic Epilogue, includes the events of that issue (which never went further). I do not own any of the characters in this fanfic. I've also included music to go with various parts of this fanfic. You can choose to listen to them if you like, each is meant to help set the mood for the chapters they appear in.

Please do not comment except in brackets [ ] or parenthesis ( ) to ensure that there is a better flow between chapters of this fanfic. Any comments are welcome. I hope you enjoy this fanfic as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Also, as I have not read all of the comic books, the characters that appear in this fanfic will only be those that appear in the animated TV series that ran in American in 1993 - 94, commonly refered to as Sonic or SatAM. Please also note that the first couple chapters will be dedicated to the same content that is in the issue of Sonic Epilogue and I do not take any credit for this material. Any material otherwise (including the prologue) is my own work.

Re: Snowfall - A Sonic Fanfic

Silence, it fell softly through the sky. The snowflakes. No one seemed to notice. All was quiet in the place that had known laughter. A place that now only knew tears. Everyone was inside. Everyone but him. He sat beside the headstone. It was the first he remembered ever seeing in Knothole. True they had lost comrades over the years, some to the enemy forces that Robotnik had made them to, then to Snively, who had risen to power with Robotnik's fall. None of them understood him anymore. How could they? Things had changed because of him. It seemed only like yesterday that they’d been planning the next mission. That had been a week ago. He hadn't spoken to them since it had happened. How could he face them? The words “you did what you had to” were just empty echoes in the face of what he had been forced to do. In the face of the loss and regret. If only he had been faster....

The snow fell softly, silently, as did his tears. Unable to escape the memory that haunted him. He sat on the hill, haunted by his memories. Memory of events he knew would never go away.

Chapter 1: Captured

A single piece of paper floated through the air, drifting through the streets of Robotropolis. A blur of blue streaked by, sending the paper off in a new direction. Just behind the speedy hedgehog were the latest bots, blasting at his heels. Turning past a street and over a railing, he landed below where two of his other fellow Freedom Fighters were waiting.

“So, did you get Tails’ message easily enough?” Sally asked, looking up from her computer companion, Nicole. Roter was the only other Freedom Fighter who’d come with her to meet up with Sonic.

“Hah! Barely. The kid needs to work on that static.”

“And how are the codes coming?” She asked.

“Not so good. He says he’ll need some sort of diversion in order to stall for time. The codes are embedded. You know how that is.”

“If Snively hid the Roboticizer’s codes so well, he’s bound to have his guard down by the factories on the left side, right?” Rotor asked.

“True...” Sonic replied, thoughtful.

“We could try THAT.”

“In that case, I think a few explosives in the area ought to work. I’ll be back in a bit... Just get ready to bolt, hear?” Sally said nothing in reply, she had some misgivings about this plan that Rotor and Sonic had cooked up, but that was nothing new. She watched him start off.

“Fine, go ahead. Just don’t over do it!” She called to him.

“Moi? Silly girl...” He called back as he raced off. They needed to give Tails the time he needed to get the codes so that they could reverse the Roboticizer’s effects on everyone.

---

Meanwhile, Tails sat watching his monitor that was hooked to his head. The single eyepiece relaying to him the information the computer had. None of it, so far, had been what he was looking for. The communicator that was hooked to it crackled a little as Sonic’s voice came over it.

“Yo, Tails! Still chuggin, over?”

“I’ve hacked into Sniv’s main code directory, over. Still searching for the ones meant for the Roboticizer, though.... Can I afford to stall?”

“Yeah, you got it. What about all that other stuff?”

“It’s significant. I’ll copy what I can if I have the time.” The image of a round robot with legs appeared on the screen.

“Some new hybrids. Sequencing for a good number of blueprints, and-- uh....” The next image was a vague image of a woman.

“What’s wrong?” Sonic asked suddenly.

“Er-- Nothing... quite a variety of secrets....” That was embarrassingly awkward.

---

Sonic maneuvered through the various hallways and passageways as he spoke to Tails.

“In a minute several bombs will go off near the left division. It should keep those bots off your trail for now.” He said as he put a bomb in place.

“Thanks. Watch out for some new hybrids! It seems to say here that--”

“HEDGEHOG ALERT! HEDGEHOG ALERT!” Sonic whirled around to see the very thing Tails had been talking about. Round robots that skated towards him on their wheeled feet.

“Too late, buddy! Looks like Sniv’s got a new pack of dogs here!”

“Hang tight! I’ll be there as soon as--”

“No,” Sonic cut him off. “the codes are more important! Keep at the hackin’ -- I’ll handle these guys.”

“ALL UNITS GO TO PRIORITY ONE!” One of them announced as it drew closer.

“Time to see just how hybrid these baseballs with legs are.” Sonic said to himself as he took off. Seconds later blasts hit the ground just behind him, he glance up to see flying robots joining the chase. New aerial hybrids too? Sniv’s been busy.... Sonic thought as he raced through the hallways.

“How are you holdin’ up out there?” Tails asked a few minutes later.

“More or less. You’re right about the hybrids though--” One of the aerial bots shot at Sonic, he leapt aside just in time.

“HEY! Watch where you point that thing!” There was a whole slew of them. As he ran off again, Sonic began thinking on the changes his enemy had made. Geez, how’d these bozos get so fast? But not fast enough, Sniv. Hurry it up, Tails!

---

Tails stared at his eyepiece, growing impatient with the computer; longing to leave it to help his friend, but Sonic had said to get the codes. C’mon codes... Where are you hiding? ... I’m comin’ Sonic, I promise...

---

In the control room, Snively was watching the chase between his new bots and Sonic.

“Curse that hedgehog! He outruns my new hybrids-- How does he keep doing this?!” He got up from the chair that had once belonged to his employer, Dr. Robotnik. The place was his now. He stared at the screen in thought. It’s about time I got rid of those Freedom Fighters. But first... I’ll need to take care of this rodent once and for all. If my hybrids can’t catch up with him... Then I’ll just have to slow him down. He smiled to himself as he hit the button, opening several port holes that sent megabuck and razor sharp shards of metal spewing onto the floor ahead of Sonic, who ran right into it.

---

“Hey, what the--” Sonic looked down as he realized he was slowing down. “Crap-- it’s megamuck!” He slipped, sliding into a shard of metal.

“Aaghhh!!!” The metal bit into his right leg, leaving a gash, the blood mixing with the megamuck beneath him.

“What was THAT? Sonic, you all right out there?” Tail’s voice came alert over the com.

“Just-- ugh -- Just keep looking for the codes, bro!” Sonic replied as he tried to get himself out of the megamuck.

“All right! -- One two one one... yeah, I’ve cracked into the codes. Hang on for two secs, man! I’m there as soon as this downloads. Sonic? Can you hear me?” Even as Tails’ voice came over the com, one of the robots was hoisting Sonic up, having tied him up in ropes securely.

“Forget it! I’ll worry about myself -- Just tell Sally and the rest to get out of here!” Sonic replied as Snively came over.

“Well. Well.. and what do we have here.” He smiled. He had done what his former employer had failed to do. He had captured Sonic successfully.

---

Tails ran as fast as he could, having gotten the codes. Not before I find you first. He thought and ran through the city in search of Sonic. He was just in time to see the group of bots fade into the distance.

“SONIC!” He fell to his knees, panting.

“No! Too late! Why am I always so slow?!”

Chapter Two: New Beginnings

The sound of a door opening was the first thing that Sonic heard when he came to. He could feel the shackles on his hands that kept him chained to the wall. He groaned as he began to come around.

“What...?” He managed as the figure before him began to come into focus. Snively.

“Ah, Sonic. Nice to see you awake friend. I hope you slept well. You just might need the rest before tonight.”

“Hope you slept well too Snovly. You’re really gonna need it.” Sonic shot back. He knew his friends would come for him. Snively took out a syringe.

“All I really want is a little bit of your time.” He replied as he held the needle up. “Surely it’s no reason to be rude now is it?” A bot that had accompanied Snively grabbed Sonic’s head, pulling him to his feet.

“What the--??”

“Don’t be ridiculous. This won’t hurt... much.” With a swift motion, he stuck the needle into Sonic.

“EYAAAA!!!” Sonic cried out as the pain hit him.

---

Back at Knothole, Sally sat in a room waiting for news from Tails while Bunnie and Antoine looked on. She listened quietly as Tails reported in.

“-- And I’m searching for him now. ”

Something came to her suddenly, surprising her. This feeling.... She remembered various times she’d been with Sonic as the feeling seemed to grow. This awful feeling... Why... Do I know... She thought, remembering the last time she’d seen him, just earlier that day when he said he would be back. ...I will never see him again?

---

In the cell, Sonic knelt, sweat pouring over him as the serum he had been injected with began to burn through him. The sliver of the moon visible through a high set window and provided the only light. He wasn’t looking at it though, but at the floor as he tried to fight.

“Man... Whatever Sniv put in that formula ... I’m startin’ to feel it.... But I can’t! ... Let it.... Have to fight it .... But .... So hard.... I ... can’t ....” Sonic muttered to himself as he lost the struggle. He closed his eyes. Memories of his friends ... of Knothole, of Sally, his love; of his best friend, Tails; flashed across his mind as the last part of him was consumed by the formula. He managed two last words as himself.

“... I’m .... sorry.” When he opened his eyes again they glowed red, the formula had done its work.

Chapter 3: Intruders

Tails peered around the corner of a building not far from the base that was Snively’s headquarters. He clenched his fist as he here was no way he could get inside by himself. There were just far too many guards patrolling the place. There was nothing he could do but wait for Sally. She was coming soon, the plan had been her idea after all, and he knew she’d be able to figure a way inside. They had to get Sonic out. They would get him back, they’d done it before in the past; they’d do it again. Sonic had saved him and the others countless times, it was time they saved him. The com crackled quietly.

“Tails. I’m here. Where are you exactly?”

“Across from the headquarters. I can see Swatbots all over the place. Security is tight. Over.”

“Give me a moment, stay out of sight of them.” She replied and Tails listened to the silence around him. Well, the almost silence. There was the whirling sound of the patrol bots that walked not so far away. Their engines humming disturbed the quiet of night. Robotropolis had once been a peaceful city, that had been before Dr. Robotnik took over. Snively, who had worked for Robotnik, had turned out to be a more formidable foe than Robotnik or any other enemy in the past had ever proven to be. There was no question in Tails’ mind how Snively had done what Robotnik had only attempted so many times. Robotnik had been a fool of an enemy, Snively was not; like Tails, he was smart. That made him all the more dangerous and that was why Tails had insisted on going on this mission. As much as he hated to admit it, the fact that he and Snively thought before acting meant that he was the only Freedom Fighter who could really match their foe on that score. Tails only an idea what was planned for his friend, it wouldn’t be for good, he knew that much. He knew they had to get Sonic out of there before he was Robotocized like so many before him, that was the worst scenario; and If that happened ..... The sound of Sally’s voice broke into his thoughts.

“I’ve found a way in. I’ll meet you in a couple minutes, over.”

“Roger that.” Tails waited, he was impatient to get inside and get Sonic out, fortunately he didn’t have to wait long. Sally appeared a little sooner than he’d expected.

“There’s a vent on the south side. We can get in that way.”

“Lead the way.” She nodded and the two of them set off. Making their way slowly through the various streets, avoiding the patrol bots at all costs. Hiding where ever they could when patrol bots passed by. After several close calls, they made it to the vent.

“Nicole, can you create a map for us?”

“Affirmative, Sally.” Nicole responded and a holographic map of the complex appeared.

“Let’s go.” Sally said and Tails pried the vent off. She went in first with him behind her. He replaced the vent’s grate behind him. As they crawled through the vent, Sally couldn’t help the feeling of dread that was slowly creeping through her. Why should she dread getting Sonic out of here? It didn’t make any sense, but she felt it keenly. The closer they got, she was sure, the stronger she felt it. Once they were out of the vents, Sally looked at the map.

“He wouldn’t want Sonic to escape easily... so... he’ll be on the floor below us. In the reinforced cells. Follow me.” Tails nodded without a word. Hang on Sonic. We’re coming.

---

In the pristine metal room, Sonic lounged as he munched on a chili dog, completely at ease. The tray on the small table that had once held half a dozen chili dogs was now completely empty and he polished off the final one. He licked his fingers. It wasn’t a fancy place, but as Snively had said, it wasn’t all that bad either. There was food here, he had a place to crash. The bots weren’t much company really, but he could entertain himself. What else could a hedgehog want? He felt that there was something missing, but he dismissed the notion. He had all he needed, nothing was missing. The feeling, however, persisted like a gnat that refused to go away. He got up and paced a moment before the small bed. The only other piece of furniture in the room. Well, he had work to do soon. He might as well see if there was something entertaining for him to do. He left the room and went through the halls, the bots ignored him as they did their patrols. It was boring here when all most of the robots did was work, he needed something to do.
Suddenly the alarms went off.

“About time! Finally some action!” He said as he raced towards the control room where Snively was waiting.

“What’s happin’?”

“Freedom Fighters! In the building!” Snively replied and Sonic smirked.

“No sweat. I’ll deal with ‘em.” Sonic left the room while Snively turned back to the monitor to watch. It was too good to pass up to see the look on the faces of Sonic’s former friends when they met up with him again.

Chapter 4: Nightfall

“Hmmm, now if I were a Freedom Fighter... where would I go first?” Sonic asked himself as he stopped in one hall. He thought for a moment. Well, he wasn’t a Freedom Fighter so his guess was as good as the patrol bots. He turned around a corner and stopped, it was the intruders!

“Well, must be my lucky day.” Sonic said with a smirk.

“Sonic!” Tails exclaimed, both in surprise at their good fortune and joy at having found his friend.

“Sonic! We’ve been looking for you!” Sally said. “What happened?”

“I donno. Can’t really remember much, but I do remember the alarm going off just a few minutes ago. Intruders in the building. That would be you.”

“What are you talking about Sonic?” Tails asked.

“Sonic? ... What’s gotten into you?” Sally could feel that something was off. She wasn’t sure what it was though.

“It’s simple. You’re here to destroy everything and I’m here to stop you.” He replied.

“I don’t like the look of this.” Tails said.

“We’re your friends Sonic. Please tell me you remember me.” Sally said as she ran to him, looking into his eyes. Hoping beyond hope that things weren’t as bad as she thought. He shoved her aside with one hand, sending her flying back further than it normally should have. Tails stared at Sonic. This wasn’t the friend he remembered.

“Sonic....” Tears welled up in Tails’ eyes at the cold-hearted smirk on the face of the one who had once been his best friend, his big brother, the one he’d wanted to be like when he grew up. He ran over to Sally and knelt next to her.

“Pathetic. You can’t fool me. I know what you’re trying to do. I won’t be deceived so easily. It’s time to say good-bye.” Tails looked at Sonic, anger replacing the sadness he felt. This wasn’t Sonic. He knew that his friend would never be so cruel. He glared at Sonic and picked up Sally who just lay limp. She wasn’t hurt, not physically, but the hurt she felt now was worse than any wound. It was in her eyes, tears glistened in her eyes and Tails knew he had to get Sally out of here. They couldn’t stay. He would... He wouldn’t think about that now. Holding the broken Sally close, he lifted off.

“You won’t get far.” Sonic smirked. Tails said nothing as he flew off, aerial bots arrived, hot on their trail as was Sonic. He flew as fast as he could, zipping around corners and taking the way that he remembered that the two of them had used earlier. Tails knew he couldn’t out run Sonic, but he could out fly him... and the bots. He cut a corner sharply, causing several of the bots to crash, one crashed and fell in a fiery heap in front of Sonic. Sonic skidded to a halt before backing up and leaping over what was left of the smoking bot. It didn’t take him long, but it did delay him for a few moments. That was all Tails needed as he saw an overhead vent and disappeared behind it with Sally. Sonic raced by, keen on catching up and not noticing they had disappeared from sight. The aerial bots flew by right behind Sonic. Sally said nothing as Tails carried her through the huge vent and outside. Not bothering to cover the vent this time, he took off again, cradling her close. They had a problem. A big one.

---

After searching the entire place from top to bottom in the few minutes it took him, Sonic returned to the control room where Snively was waiting.

“Musta got away. I didn’t see ‘em.”

“No matter. There will be other opportunities my friend. For now, relax. Enjoy yourself.” Sonic smiled and left Snively to his plans and work. With Sonic on his side, no one could stop him and he’d finally be rid of the Freedom Fighters once and for all. He had succeeded where his former employer had failed.

---

A flight that had seem to take no time at all before now seemed to take forever. He couldn’t forget the look on Sonic’s face. The things he’d said. Those red eyes.... He thought back to when he had first seen Sonic. It had been, it seemed, a life time ago. He had been all alone, his parents had vanished on the day of the attack; the day that Dr. Robotnik had taken over. He’d been wandering through the forest; hungry, tired, and lonely. He was just a little kid, barely old enough to even remember his parents. How he’d escaped that day he no longer remembered, but what he did remember was something he’d never forget. His first meeting with Sonic.

Chapter 5: Nightmare Reality

For the first time there was silence in Knothole. No one felt much like talking. Tails had been in his room since he’d come back and Sally was asleep. The look in Tails’ eyes had kept anyone from asking questions. None of them were sure what had happened, why they had failed to bring back Sonic. The wind of winter blew in clouds that would soon bring in snow. Even so, no one was going out to try and see the first snowflake. A place that had once been busy, so full of laughter, plans, hopes and dreams, now was as silent as a tomb. After what seemed like a lifetime of waiting, Tails appeared before the others. Each looking at him, questions in their eyes. He didn’t meet their eyes, his hair over his eyes, hiding the look of sorrow in them.

“I don’t know what Snively did. I can only guess. Sonic has turned on us.” The news was met with shocked disbelief on the face of the other Freedom Fighters. For as long as anyone could remember, Sonic had been their unofficial leader. Their one real hope against the evil Robotnik and then against Snively. Without Sonic... what hope was there for them?

“It’s hard... but we’ll get by. Somehow. We can’t give up. I’ll think of something.”

---

Sonic yawned as he settled down for the night. He closed his eyes and was asleep almost immediately.

// “Sonic! We’ve been looking for you!” Sally! Tails! He tried to move his mouth, to warn his friends, but nothing happened.

“What happened?” Run! Snively gave me some sort of potion and now...

“I donno. Can’t really remember, but I do remember the alarm going off just a few minutes ago. Intruders in the building. That would be you.” Sonic heard himself say. What was he saying?! They were his friends!

“Sonic? What’s gotten into you?” Sally asked.

“I don’t like the look of this.” Tails said.

“We’re your friends Sonic. Please tell me you remember me.” Sally said as she ran to him, looking into his eyes. Of course I remember! How could I forget?

Again, he found he couldn’t speak the words and his body seemed to move on its own, shoving her aside with one hand, sending her flying back further than it normally should have. Tails stared at Sonic. Sally! I’m so sorry Sally.... I... Why can’t I control my body?! What is wrong with me?!

“Sonic....” Tears welled up in his eyes at the cold-hearted smirk on the face of the one who had once been his best friend, his big brother, the one he’d wanted to be like when he grew up. Tails.... I...

Tails ran over to Sally and knelt next to her.

“Pathetic.” Sonic heard himself speak. It wasn’t what he wanted to say and Tails looked up at him, anger replacing the sadness. He glared at Sonic and picked up Sally who just lay limp.

Tails! Sally! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’M SORRY!!! He watched Tails flee, giving chase, but he lost sight of them around a corner.

I’m ...... Sorry..... The image faded and he fell to his knees, crying in frustration. He had control now, but it was too late and there was no knowing how long it would last....\\

Sonic woke with a start. He brushed away the tears in his eyes.

“Why am I crying?” What was going on? He felt that he should remember something, but it was like grasping at air with his bare hands. He simply could not remember.

“Guess I had a nightmare or something.” He muttered. It was over now, whatever it had been. He noticed it was still dark out. He got a glass of milk and went back to bed. He figured he’d sleep a little longer.

---

Snively watched the hedgehog get back in bed.

“Get what rest you can hedgehog. I have big plans for you. BIG plans indeed...” He laughed, his evil laughter ringing through the empty room.

Chapter 6: Without a Hedgehog

Tails stood on a hilltop that overlooked Knothole Village. Memories flashing through his mind, memories of years before. The time Sonic had given him shoes just like his, their first mission together.... All the times that Sonic had come to his rescue, the various things he’d invented that Sonic had tried out. The encouragement that he’d gotten. His friend, like the fall leaves on tress, was just gone. The cold wind tugged at his fur and tails lightly, but he didn’t seem to notice. He was lost in his many memories of the friend he remembered. The hero of Knothole who had sworn to rid them of Robotnik. He’d done that alright, but then came a new enemy; Snively. Sonic had said he’d get rid of him too, but it seems that wasn’t to be.

The events of the days before seemed to haunt him, like shadows that followed him around. He hadn't spoken to Sally since the other day. He knew she loved Sonic in a different way.... she was hurting just as he was, but she was taking this a lot harder than he was too. One day seemed to blend into another, but so far Sonic had not made an appearance at Knothole as was feared. A relief for the remaining Freedom Fighters.

“What do you mean you don’t know where it is?!” Snively yelled in frustration.

“Like I tell ya... I don’t remember the place.” Sonic said with a shrug.

“How can you NOT remember! You liv- er... spied on that village for me for years!”

“Look bub, don’t take it out on me. All I remember is that they’re my enemies. Anyway, I’m hungry. I’ll catch ya later.” Sonic took off.

“SOOOONNNIIICCC!!!!” Snively yelled in anger and frustration, but Sonic just laughed as he sped away. No one could catch him, he knew that much. He sped to where he knew the kitchen was and found a bot standing quietly in the room.

“Yo! Bot! Fix me up half a dozen chili dogs will ya? Make it fast too! I’m starvin’!” The robot did as he said, quickly making a pile of steaming chili dogs on a plate which it then handed to Sonic who sat on the floor and began to gulp them down with the same gusto he’d always had for his favorite food.

Dulcy poked her head through the window of Antoine’s house, he’d left the window open so that she could hear what was going on. It was just the three of them, Dulcy, Antoine, and Rotor. Bunnie was with Sally, as she had been since Tails had returned with Sally.

“What are we gonna do now that Sonic’s gone?” Dulcy asked.

“A v’ry good question.” Antoine said.

“We could try and get him back.”

“Ze problem wiz zat iz no one can catch him.”

“Well... I could try. I never have tried before.” Dulcy put in.

“It might be a good option, but once you catch him, how do you keep him from hurting you?” Rotor asked.

“Good question.” Dulcy conceded.

“What about a net? I’ve been working on some electrified nets. I meant to use them against Snively’s forces... but... I can recalibrate one so that it would only jolt him enough to knock him out.” Rotor said after a moment of silence.

“Zat might work. Get to it.” Dulcy smiled. She’d catch Sonic, they’d see.
